Chapter 2: The Family Secret Behind the Black SUVs

Daniel stood beneath the mansion's golden entrance lights, staring at the three black SUVs.

His sister had followed him outside.

"What is this?"" Vanessa demanded.

One of the bodyguards stepped aside to give me room to enter the vehicle.

I didn't move immediately.

I wanted Daniel to hear what came next.

"Chloe," he said slowly, "who are these men?""

I looked at him.

"People who don't need you to tell them whether my daughter deserves protection.""

His jaw tightened.

"Stop speaking in riddles. Why are they calling you Mrs. Bennett?""

Before I could answer, a second man approached.

He was older, perhaps in his late fifties, with silver hair and a discreet earpiece.

"Mrs. Bennett, your grandfather is on the phone.""

He handed me a black mobile phone.

I accepted it.

"Hello, Grandpa.""

A familiar voice came through immediately.

"Chloe, sweetheart. Are you all right?""

I glanced at Lily.

"I'm fine.""

"Don't lie to me. Marcus told me what happened.""

I closed my eyes briefly.

"Grandpa, I don't want to make a big deal out of this.""

There was a pause.

Then his voice became quieter.

"Someone struck your little girl, Chloe.""

"Yes.""

"And her father did nothing?""

I looked at Daniel.

He was watching me with an expression I couldn't read.

"Yes," I whispered.

My grandfather exhaled.

"Then perhaps it's time I stopped pretending that man deserves the benefit of the doubt.""

"Please don't do anything reckless.""

"Sweetheart, I'm seventy-two years old. I've earned the right to be very deliberate.""

Despite everything, I almost laughed.

"I'll come see you tomorrow.""

"No. Come tonight. The east wing is ready.

Lily's room is prepared, and I've had Dr. Collins waiting.""

I glanced at my daughter.

"She might be frightened.""

"Then tell her Grandpa has chocolate cookies.""

That finally brought a tiny smile to Lily's face.

"Chocolate?"" she whispered.

I covered the phone.

"Apparently, a whole box.""

Her eyes brightened.

I turned back toward the vehicle.

Daniel stepped forward.

"Wait.""

His voice was no longer angry.

It was uncertain.

"Chloe, we need to talk.""

"We've talked.""

"No, we haven't. You can't just leave my house with my daughter.""

I stared at him.

"Your house?""

He looked confused.

"Yes. Our home is at Whitmore Manor.""

I shook my head.

"No, Daniel. Tonight, you made it very clear what kind of home that is.""

Vanessa approached, still holding her cheek.

"Daniel, don't let her manipulate you. She probably hired these men to intimidate us.""

One of the bodyguards turned toward her.

"Madam, I would advise you to watch your language.""

Vanessa laughed.

"Excuse me? Do you know who I am?""

The man remained perfectly calm.

"Yes. Vanessa Whitmore.""

He glanced at his tablet.

"Your family's company has had several outstanding security concerns recently. I would recommend you focus on those rather than our employer's family arrangements.""

Vanessa's face changed.

Daniel frowned.

"What security concerns?""

The bodyguard didn't elaborate.

Instead, he looked at me.

"Mrs. Bennett, shall we?""

I nodded.

Before entering the SUV, I looked at Daniel one last time.

"Don't call me tonight.""

He stepped closer.

"Chloe, you're my wife.""

"And Lily is your daughter.""

His expression hardened.

"You're making this into something it isn't.""

I looked down at the little girl in my arms.

"She's six, Daniel. She should never have to wonder whether her own father will protect her.""

Then I entered the vehicle.

The door closed softly.

Through the tinted glass, I watched Daniel stand motionless in the driveway.

Vanessa was talking rapidly beside him.

He wasn't listening.

He was staring at the SUVs.

Marcus, the head of my grandfather's security team, sat in the front passenger seat.

"Shall we leave, ma'am?""

"Yes.""

The vehicles pulled away.

Lily remained quiet for several minutes.

Then she touched my cheek.

"Mommy?""

"Yes, sweetheart?""

"Are we going to Grandpa's house?""

"Yes.""

"Is he going to be mad?""

I brushed her hair back.

"Not at you.""

She looked down at her hands.

"Will Daddy come?""

I didn't answer immediately.

Outside, the mansion disappeared behind the tall iron gates.

"I don't know, baby.""

She nodded slowly.

Then she leaned against me.

"Okay.""

I kissed the top of her head.

And for the first time in months, I allowed myself to cry.

Not loudly.

Not dramatically.

Just enough for the tears to slip silently down my face.

Marcus noticed through the rearview mirror.

"Mrs. Bennett?""

"I'm all right.""

He hesitated.

"Mr. Bennett asked me to tell you something.""

I looked up.

"What?""

"He said you don't have to explain yourself anymore.""

My grandfather had always been like that.

He rarely spoke about emotions.

But he had never once made me feel that I needed to earn his protection.

The drive to the Bennett estate took forty minutes.

Unlike the Whitmore mansion, which was designed to impress business associates, my grandfather's home was surrounded by old oak trees, rose gardens, and quiet stone pathways.

It was a place built for living.

Not showing off.

When we arrived, the front doors were already open.

My grandfather stood on the steps.

Arthur Bennett was a tall man with silver hair, a walking stick, and the kind of presence that made powerful executives lower their voices.

He was wearing a dark navy cardigan over a white shirt.

The moment he saw Lily, his face softened.

"There's my favorite girl.""

Lily hesitated.

"Hi, Grandpa.""

He bent slightly.

"May I have a hug?""

She nodded.

I lowered her carefully, and he wrapped his arms around her.

Then he noticed the red mark on her cheek.

His smile disappeared.

He didn't touch it.

He simply looked at me.

"Inside," he said.

His voice was quiet.

Too quiet.

We entered the house.

A housekeeper brought warm milk and cookies for Lily. Dr. Collins examined her cheek while my grandfather and I sat in the library.

The fire crackled softly.

For several minutes, neither of us spoke.

Finally, he asked, "Tell me exactly what happened.""

So I did.

I told him about the dinner.

Vanessa's accusation.

The slap.

Daniel's silence.

His concern about the guests.

I told him everything.

When I finished, my grandfather placed his glass on the table.

"That boy has confused your patience with weakness.""

"Grandpa, Daniel isn't a boy.""

"Then he should have known better.""

I rubbed my forehead.

"I don't want revenge. I just want Lily to feel safe.""

Arthur nodded.

"That's why I sent the security team.""

He leaned back.

"Now, Chloe, there's something you need to know.""

I looked at him.

"What?""

"Your husband has been asking questions about your inheritance.""

My stomach tightened.

"What inheritance?""

Arthur's eyes narrowed.

"The Bennett family trust.""

I stared at him.

"But I thought you said everything was secure.""

"It is. However, Daniel recently approached one of our legal representatives.""

"Why?""

"Apparently, he wanted to know whether marriage gave him any authority over your voting rights.""

I felt cold.

Daniel had never shown much interest in my family's business.

At least, not openly.

He knew I had been raised by my grandfather after my parents died. He knew Arthur had built Bennett Global from a small shipping operation into an international investment and logistics group.

But I'd always kept that world separate from our marriage.

I wanted to be loved for myself.

Not for my surname.

"Did you tell him anything?"" I asked.

"No.""

My grandfather leaned forward.

"But that's not the worst part.""

I swallowed.

"What could be worse?""

Arthur reached for a folder on his desk.

He opened it and slid several printed documents toward me.

There were emails.

Bank transfers.

A draft legal agreement.

And Daniel's signature.

I read the first page.

Then the second.

My fingers began to tremble.

"What is this?""

"A proposed acquisition agreement.""

I looked up.

"Whitmore Holdings?""

Arthur nodded.

"Your husband's family company.""

I stared at the figures.

The agreement involved a substantial loan secured against assets that Daniel did not personally own.

But the name listed as the proposed guarantor was mine.

My full legal name.

Chloe Elizabeth Bennett.

I shook my head.

"I never signed this.""

"I know.""

"Then how—"

"That's what we're investigating.""

I pushed the papers away.

"Did Daniel do this?""

Arthur didn't answer immediately.

He simply tapped one of the pages.

"Look at the date.""

I did.

The document had been prepared three weeks earlier.

Three weeks before Vanessa slapped Lily.

Three weeks before tonight's dinner.

Three weeks before I had any reason to question my husband's loyalty.

Then my grandfather said something that made my blood run cold.

"Chloe, I think Daniel married you believing that one day he could gain access to this family.""

I stared at him.

"No.""

"Sweetheart—"

"No. Daniel loved me.""

Arthur didn't argue.

He simply opened another folder.

Inside was a photograph.

Daniel stood outside a private restaurant with a man I recognized immediately.

It was Robert Whitmore.

His father.

But the woman standing beside them wasn't Vanessa.

It was someone else.

A woman wearing a cream-colored coat.

I leaned closer.

My breath caught.

Because I knew her.

Her name was Evelyn Carter.

And she had once been Daniel's fiancée.

The woman he had told me abandoned him years before we met.

I looked at the date printed beneath the photograph.

It had been taken only two months ago.

"Why was Daniel meeting her?""

My grandfather's expression turned grim.

"I was hoping you'd tell me.""

Before I could respond, Marcus appeared in the doorway.

"Mr. Bennett?""

Arthur looked up.

"What is it?""

Marcus held out a tablet.

"Mr. Whitmore is here.""

I frowned.

"Daniel?""

Marcus shook his head.

"His father, ma'am.""

My grandfather slowly stood.

"Show him in.""

A moment later, Robert Whitmore entered the library.

He wore a tailored charcoal suit and carried a leather briefcase.

He looked at my grandfather.

Then at me.

Then at the folder containing the forged agreement.

His expression changed.

"Arthur," he said carefully.

"I believe we need to discuss a family matter.""

My grandfather smiled without warmth.

"You're right, Robert.""

He picked up the photograph.

"Especially the part involving your son's former fiancée.""

Robert went pale.

And before he could answer, my phone began vibrating.

Daniel.

One message appeared.

Chloe, please don't tell your grandfather about the documents. You don't understand what your father-in-law has done.

I stared at the screen.

May you like

Then another message arrived.

And whatever you do, don't trust Evelyn.
