Chapter 3: The Woman My Husband Never Told Me About
Robert Whitmore stood in my grandfather's library as though someone had just pulled the floor from beneath him.
He glanced at the photograph in Arthur's hand.
Then at me.
Then back at Arthur.
"Where did you get that?""
My grandfather placed the photograph on the desk.
"Does it matter?""
Robert adjusted his cufflinks.
"That picture has been taken out of context.""
I folded my arms.
"Then put it into context.""
He looked at me.
"Chloe, this is a complicated business matter.""
"No. It's a simple question. Why was my husband meeting his former fiancée?""
Robert sighed.
"Daniel and Evelyn have known each other for years.""
"I know that. He told me.""
"Then why are you asking?""
"Because he told me she left the country and wanted nothing more to do with him.""
Robert's expression flickered.
My grandfather noticed.
"So that wasn't true?""
Robert sat down without being invited.
"Arthur, perhaps we should speak privately.""
"No," I said.
He looked at me.
"This concerns my marriage. My daughter's future. And apparently, my family's money. So whatever you have to say can be said in front of me.""
My grandfather gave a small nod.
"She's right.""
Robert opened his briefcase.
He removed a leather folder and placed it on the table.
"Daniel made some financial decisions that I wasn't entirely comfortable with.""
I looked at the documents.
"What kind of decisions?""
"His company has been struggling.""
That surprised me.
Daniel had always told me Whitmore Holdings was expanding.
He talked about new properties, overseas investments, and lucrative partnerships.
At family dinners, Robert liked to remind everyone that the Whitmores were among the most influential families in the region.
I had never suspected they were in trouble.
"How bad?"" I asked.
Robert looked away.
"Bad enough.""
My grandfather tapped the folder.
"And you believe Chloe's inheritance can solve it.""
Robert didn't answer.
That was answer enough.
I felt something twist inside my chest.
"Was that why Daniel married me?""
Robert finally looked at me.
"I don't believe he started out intending to hurt you.""
"That's not what I asked.""
He hesitated.
Then he said, "Daniel believed your grandfather would eventually support the family business.""
I laughed softly.
"Support it?""
"Through strategic investment.""
"With my money?""
"You're his wife.""
I stared at him.
"That doesn't answer my question.""
Robert closed the folder.
"Chloe, you need to understand how these things work. Marriage creates obligations. Families help each other.""
"My family never agreed to guarantee your debts.""
"Your grandfather is an extremely wealthy man.""
Arthur leaned forward.
"Careful, Robert.""
Robert looked irritated.
"I'm simply being practical.""
"No," Arthur replied.
"You're being presumptuous.""
Silence filled the library.
Then Robert stood.
"I came here because I wanted to prevent this situation from becoming unnecessarily ugly.""
Arthur smiled.
"You're a little late.""
Robert turned toward me.
"Chloe, Daniel loves you. Whatever happened tonight, I'm sure the two of you can work through it.""
I thought about Lily's trembling hands.
The red mark on her cheek.
Daniel's raised palms.
His words.
Don't make this worse in front of everyone.
"Did Daniel tell you Vanessa hit Lily?""
Robert looked uncomfortable.
"Vanessa has a difficult personality.""
"That's not an answer.""
"She shouldn't have done it.""
"Shouldn't?""
I stepped closer.
"She struck a six-year-old child hard enough to leave a mark. Daniel watched her do it. Then he blamed me for reacting.""
Robert rubbed his chin.
"Families have disagreements.""
I shook my head.
"You're all using that word as if it makes cruelty acceptable.""
He picked up his briefcase.
"Perhaps everyone should calm down.""
Arthur stood.
"Marcus.""
The security chief appeared immediately.
"Sir?""
"Please escort Mr. Whitmore to the entrance.""
Robert's face reddened.
"Arthur, this is unnecessary.""
"Then you should have behaved differently.""
Marcus opened the door.
Robert walked out without another word.
As soon as the library door closed, I sank into the nearest chair.
My hands were cold.
My grandfather poured me a glass of water.
"Drink.""
I did.
Then I looked at him.
"Do you think Daniel ever loved me?""
Arthur was quiet for a moment.
"I think people can feel affection and still make selfish choices.""
I stared into the glass.
"That's a terrible answer.""
"It's an honest one.""
He sat opposite me.
"Your grandmother used to say that the most dangerous people weren't always the ones who hated you. Sometimes they were the ones who loved what you could give them.""
I swallowed.
"I don't know what to do.""
"Then don't decide tonight.""
He reached across the table and covered my hand.
"Get some sleep. Let Lily rest. Tomorrow, we'll speak to the attorneys.""
I nodded.
But sleep was impossible.
At midnight, I walked into the east wing to check on Lily.
She was asleep beneath a cream-colored blanket, one arm wrapped around her favorite stuffed rabbit.
The small night-light cast a warm glow across her face.
I sat beside her.
Her cheek was still slightly swollen.
I brushed my fingers over her hair.
"I'm sorry, baby," I whispered.
I didn't know whether I was apologizing for Daniel, for Vanessa, or for all the times I'd allowed Lily to spend time around people who made her feel unwanted.
My phone vibrated.
Daniel again.
Please answer me.
I ignored it.
Another message appeared.
My father came to see your grandfather, didn't he?
Then:
Chloe, we need to talk before you hear the wrong version of things.
I switched off the screen.
But a few seconds later, a new message arrived from an unknown number.
Mrs. Bennett, my name is Evelyn Carter. We need to meet.
I stared at the name.
Then another message appeared.
Daniel told you I abandoned him. That's not what happened.
My heart began beating faster.
I have something you need to see.
I looked at Lily.
Then I stepped quietly into the hallway and called the number.
A woman answered on the second ring.
"Hello?""
"Is this Evelyn?""
"Yes.""
"This is Chloe Whitmore.""
There was a brief silence.
Then she corrected me.
"I know who you are. You're Chloe Bennett.""
I gripped the phone.
"Why are you contacting me?""
"Because I saw what happened at the dinner tonight.""
My stomach tightened.
"How?""
"I was there.""
I looked toward the bedroom door.
"You were at the Whitmore mansion?""
"Yes. I was invited by Vanessa.""
"Why?""
Evelyn hesitated.
"She wanted me to meet Daniel.""
I felt my throat tighten.
"Meet him for what?""
"Chloe, I don't think this is something we should discuss over the phone.""
"Then tell me why you're contacting me.""
Her voice dropped.
"Because Daniel has been lying to you for a long time.""
I closed my eyes.
"What kind of lies?""
"The kind that could cost you everything.""
I gripped the phone harder.
"You're going to have to be more specific.""
Evelyn took a breath.
"Do you remember the week you and Daniel got engaged?""
I frowned.
"Of course.""
"Do you remember what happened to your grandfather?""
I stiffened.
Three days before Daniel proposed, Arthur had suffered a serious medical emergency.
He had been hospitalized for several days.
The doctors eventually stabilized him, but the incident had frightened me terribly.
Daniel had stayed beside me.
He had brought me coffee, held my hand, and promised that everything would be all right.
"What about it?"" I asked.
Evelyn spoke carefully.
"Daniel visited your grandfather's hospital room that week.""
I shook my head.
"Yes. He came with me.""
"No, Chloe. He came alone.""
My blood ran cold.
"What?""
"I know because I was there.""
I stared at the dark hallway.
Evelyn continued.
"He had a meeting with one of the hospital's private administrators. He asked questions about Arthur Bennett's estate documents, his medical capacity, and who would control his financial affairs if he became incapacitated.""
I couldn't speak.
"Why would he do that?""
"Because your grandfather had recently updated his will.""
My stomach dropped.
"What does that have to do with Daniel?""
"Everything.""
I leaned against the wall.
"You're saying Daniel knew about my inheritance before he proposed?""
"I'm saying he knew more than you think.""
I closed my eyes.
For six years, I had remembered that engagement as the happiest moment of my life.
Daniel had proposed in the garden outside the hospital.
He had knelt beneath the roses, holding a beautiful ring.
He had told me he wanted to build a family with me.
I had cried.
I'd said yes.
And I'd believed every word.
"Why didn't you tell me before?"" I whispered.
Evelyn was silent.
Then she answered.
"Because I was afraid of him.""
That frightened me more than anything else she'd said.
"Afraid of Daniel?""
"Not just Daniel. His father. Vanessa. All of them.""
I swallowed.
"What do you have?""
"Documents. Emails. A recording.""
"Of what?""
"Daniel discussing your grandfather's trust with his father.""
My knees nearly gave way.
"Why do you have these things?""
"Because Daniel asked me to help him obtain information about your family.""
I covered my mouth.
"And you agreed?""
"At first, yes.""
Her honesty surprised me.
"I thought we were going to rebuild our relationship. Daniel told me you were only a temporary arrangement. He said he was marrying you for business reasons and would eventually leave.""
I felt physically sick.
"Temporary arrangement?""
"That's what he called you.""
For several seconds, I couldn't hear anything except the sound of my own breathing.
Then Evelyn said something else.
"Chloe, there's another reason I need to see you.""
"What?""
"Vanessa didn't invite me to dinner just to make Daniel jealous.""
I straightened.
"What do you mean?""
"She told me tonight was supposed to be the night Daniel finally convinced you to sign something.""
I remembered the folder on the library table.
The forged guarantee.
The proposed acquisition.
My name.
I gripped the phone.
"What was I supposed to sign?""
Evelyn hesitated.
"A document transferring control of your voting rights in Bennett Global to a company owned by the Whitmores.""
I felt the air leave my lungs.
"That doesn't make sense. Daniel never mentioned it.""
"Because he knew you would refuse.""
I looked toward the bedroom where my daughter was sleeping.
"Then why would he think I'd sign it?""
Evelyn's answer came quietly.
"Because Vanessa planned to create a situation where you'd be too emotional to read it carefully.""
I froze.
"What situation?""
"The dinner. The confrontation. The humiliation.""
I remembered Vanessa's deliberate insults.
Her comments about my background.
Her complaints about Lily.
The way she had looked at Daniel before striking my daughter.
And suddenly, the entire evening seemed different.
It hadn't been an argument that had gotten out of control.
It might have been planned.
I whispered, "Are you telling me they used my daughter?""
Evelyn didn't answer immediately.
Then she said, "Chloe, I think you need to hear the recording.""
A notification appeared on my phone.
One audio file.
I pressed play.
At first, there was background noise.
A glass being placed on a table.
A chair moving.
Then Daniel's voice.
Clear.
Unmistakable.
"Once Chloe signs, Bennett Global's voting rights are ours. My grandfather-in-law won't be able to stop it.""
A second voice spoke.
Vanessa.
"And what if she refuses?""
Daniel laughed.
"Then we'll make sure she has something else to worry about.""
My hand flew to my mouth.
The recording continued.
Vanessa asked, "And the child?""
Daniel answered without hesitation.
"She's Chloe's weakness. Use that if you have to.""
I stopped breathing.
The audio ended.
I stared at the screen.
My little girl.
My innocent, six-year-old daughter.
They had discussed using her as leverage.
The same child Vanessa had slapped in front of an entire room of guests.
I slowly lowered the phone.
Then I heard a voice behind me.
"Chloe?""
I turned.
My grandfather stood at the end of the hallway.
He had heard enough to understand that something terrible had happened.
"Grandpa," I whispered.
He walked toward me.
"What did they do?""
I held out the phone.
He listened to the recording.
His expression changed.
When Daniel's voice said, Use the child if you have to, my grandfather closed his eyes.
For a long moment, he said nothing.
Then he handed the phone back.
"Marcus.""
The security chief appeared from the nearby doorway.
"Yes, sir?""
"Wake the legal team. Contact our investigators. Nobody touches a single document connected to Whitmore Holdings until we've secured copies.""
"Understood.""
Arthur looked at me.
"Chloe, there's something else.""
I swallowed.
"What?""
He glanced toward Lily's bedroom.
Then he spoke quietly.
"Your grandmother left something for you before she died. Something I never thought I'd need to give you.""
He took a small brass key from his pocket.
It was attached to a faded blue ribbon.
"What does it open?"" I asked.
"The private archive beneath the old estate.""
I stared at him.
"Why are you giving it to me now?""
His eyes hardened.
"Because your grandmother discovered something about the Whitmore family twenty years ago.""
I looked at the key.
"What did she discover?""
My grandfather's voice dropped to a whisper.
"That the Whitmores had once tried to steal this family business before.""
He paused.
"And the person who helped them was someone in our own family.""
I stared at him.
"Who?""
Arthur looked toward the dark window.
Then he gave me a name.
A name I had never expected to hear.
"Your father.""
And suddenly, I understood.
This wasn't just about Daniel.
It wasn't even just about the money.

My marriage had brought me into the middle of a secret that had been buried for decades.
And my grandfather had just handed me the key to uncover it.
