Chapter 9: The Daughter the Whitmores Kept Hidden
Nobody moved.
The photograph lay on the table between us.
My father.
Robert Whitmore.
Vanessa.
And a little girl whose eyes looked exactly like mine.
I stared at the picture.
"Vanessa's daughter?""
My mother nodded.
"Yes.""
"But Thomas said Olivia was my father's daughter.""
"She is.""
I looked at her.
"Then how can she be Vanessa's daughter?""
My mother closed her eyes.
"Because Vanessa had a relationship with your father before he married me.""
Arthur sat down slowly.
"Elizabeth, tell us everything.""
My mother took a shaky breath.
"Twenty-seven years ago, Richard and Vanessa were engaged.""
I looked at Arthur.
He nodded faintly.
"I remember.""
My mother continued.
"Vanessa became pregnant. Richard wanted to marry her, but Robert refused. He believed Richard was marrying into the wrong family.""
I frowned.
"But Dad was a Bennett.""
"Robert wanted him to become part of Whitmore Holdings instead. He wanted control over the Bennett business.""
She paused.
"When Richard refused, Robert arranged for Vanessa to marry another man. But the child had already been born.""
"Olivia.""
My mother nodded.
"Richard never stopped caring about her. He sent money through a private trust and arranged for her to be protected.""
I stared at the photograph.
"Why didn't he tell me?""
"Because he was afraid Robert would use Olivia against him.""
Arthur leaned forward.
"What happened to the girl's mother?""
My mother looked down.
"Vanessa's husband died when Olivia was young. Robert took control of her upbringing. He told everyone that Olivia was his granddaughter.""
I frowned.
"But she was already his granddaughter.""
"Yes. But he hid the fact that Richard was her father.""
I felt sick.
"Why?""
My mother looked directly at me.
"Because if Olivia's true parentage became public, she could have a legal claim to part of the Bennett estate.""
Arthur shook his head.
"That's not how the trust works.""
"Robert didn't care. He wanted to create confusion around the ownership structure.""
I thought about the documents in the underground archive.
The forged signature.
The fraudulent companies.
The proposed merger.
Suddenly, the pieces began connecting.
"Was Olivia the child they wanted to use to transfer the voting rights?""
My mother nodded.
"Robert created a series of false records suggesting Richard had transferred part of his ownership to Olivia before his death.""
Arthur's face hardened.
"Those records were fabricated.""
"Yes.""
I stared at her.
"Then why does Daniel have anything to do with this?""
My mother looked toward the hallway.
"Because Daniel discovered Olivia's identity.""
I felt my stomach tighten.
"And he was going to use it?""
"Not exactly.""
My mother hesitated.
"He wanted to use Olivia to force Robert into giving him control of Whitmore Holdings.""
Arthur's eyebrows rose.
"Explain.""
"Daniel discovered that Robert had been keeping Olivia's identity secret. He realized that if the truth came out, Robert could lose control of several family assets.""
I shook my head.
"So Daniel was blackmailing his own father?""
My mother nodded.
"He was using the information to negotiate.""
I couldn't believe it.
"Then why was he trying to take my inheritance?""
"Because he wanted both sides. Your voting rights and Robert's company.""
I closed my eyes.
My husband hadn't simply been planning to steal from my family.
He had been trying to take control of two powerful families at once.
And he had used me as the bridge.
Lily tugged at my sleeve.
"Mommy?""
I looked down.
"Yes, sweetheart?""
"Is that your mommy?""
I nodded.
"Yes.""
Lily looked at my mother.
Then she asked a question that made everyone go quiet.
"Why didn't Grandma come to your birthday?""
My mother covered her mouth.
I knelt beside Lily.
"Grandma couldn't come before, baby.""
"Why?""
I brushed her hair back.
"She was lost.""
Lily considered that.
"Did she find us now?""
I looked at my mother.
"Yes, sweetheart.""
Lily stepped forward.
"Can I hug her?""
My mother began crying.
"Of course.""
She opened her arms.
Lily approached cautiously, then wrapped her little arms around her.
My mother held her as if she were something precious.
I watched them.
I wanted to feel happy.
I wanted to run into my mother's arms and forget the twenty years we had lost.
But there was too much pain.
Too many unanswered questions.
Too many years of believing I had been abandoned.
My mother gently released Lily.
Then she turned to me.
"Chloe, I have something else to tell you.""
I sighed.
"Of course you do.""
She nodded.
"Robert didn't keep me hidden only because of the documents.""
Arthur stood.
"Elizabeth?""
My mother looked at him.
"He wanted me to sign a statement.""
"What statement?""
"A declaration that Richard had transferred his ownership to Olivia voluntarily.""
Arthur shook his head.
"That would have been impossible.""
"Robert had forged the transfer documents. He needed my signature to make them look legitimate.""
I stared at her.
"And you refused?""
She nodded.
"That's why he kept me away.""
I felt my hands tighten.
"Where were you all these years?""
"In a house outside the city. At first, I was guarded. Later, I was allowed to live independently, but I was watched.""
"Why didn't you escape?""
"I tried twice.""
Her voice cracked.
"The first time, they brought me back. The second time, Robert sent me a photograph of you leaving school.""
I covered my mouth.
"He threatened me with you.""
She nodded.
"I believed he would hurt you.""
I turned away.
I couldn't process everything at once.
Arthur approached her.
"Why come back now?""
My mother reached into her handbag.
She pulled out a small black envelope.
"Because Robert has lost control of the situation.""
She handed it to Arthur.
Inside was a copy of a recent legal filing.
Arthur read it.
His expression changed.
"What is this?""
My mother looked at me.
"Robert is preparing to transfer the remaining Whitmore assets into a private foundation.""
I frowned.
"Why?""
"Because he knows the investigation is coming. He's trying to move everything before the fraud is exposed.""
Arthur examined the document.
Then he noticed a name.
"Whitmore Children's Foundation.""
My mother nodded.
"Olivia is listed as the sole beneficiary.""
I stared.
"Isn't that good?""
My mother shook her head.
"No. The foundation is designed to make it appear that Olivia owns assets that actually belong to Bennett Global.""
Arthur looked furious.
"He's trying to use Richard's daughter as a legal shield.""
My mother nodded.
"And he intends to make the transfer tomorrow morning.""
I checked the time.
It was nearly noon.
"Then we need to stop him.""
Arthur looked toward Marcus.
"Contact our attorneys. I want an emergency injunction prepared immediately.""
Marcus nodded.
"Already underway, sir.""
Then my phone rang.
Daniel.
I looked at the screen.
My mother noticed.
"Answer it.""
I frowned.
"Why?""
"Because I think he wants something.""
I accepted the call.
"What?""
Daniel's voice was low.
"Chloe, where is your mother?""
I froze.
"How do you know she's here?""
"Robert knows.""
I looked at Arthur.
Daniel continued.
"Listen to me. Vanessa is furious. She's threatening to do something stupid.""
"What?""
"She wants to move Olivia before the lawyers arrive.""
My mother immediately stood.
"Where is Olivia?""
Daniel heard her voice.
"Elizabeth?""
My mother took the phone from me.
"Daniel, where is my granddaughter?""
He hesitated.
"At the Whitmore estate.""
"Is she safe?""
"Yes. For now.""
My mother closed her eyes.
"Put her on the phone.""
Daniel hesitated again.
"Elizabeth, I don't think—"
"PUT MY GRANDDAUGHTER ON THE PHONE!""
A few seconds passed.
Then a small voice came through.
"Hello?""
My mother began crying.
"Olivia?""
"Who is this?""
"My name is Elizabeth. I'm your grandmother.""
There was silence.
Then Olivia asked:
"Is this about my dad?""
My mother looked at me.
I stepped closer.
"Olivia, sweetheart, I'm Chloe.""
The little girl went quiet.
Then she whispered:
"The lady in the photograph?""
My heart stopped.
"What photograph?""
"The one Grandma Vanessa keeps in her drawer. She said I wasn't supposed to look at it.""
My mother covered her mouth.
I swallowed.
"Olivia, do you know who your father was?""
"She said he was a bad man.""
I closed my eyes.
"His name was Richard Bennett.""
The girl didn't answer.
Then she asked:
"Is he really my dad?""
I looked at my mother.
"Yes, sweetheart.""
A tiny sob came through the phone.
"I thought nobody wanted me.""
My mother broke down.
"Oh, my darling.""
I felt tears running down my face.
"That's not true, Olivia. Your father loved you. He never stopped.""
Then a woman's voice shouted in the background.
"WHO ARE YOU TALKING TO?""
Vanessa.
The phone moved.
Olivia screamed.
"Grandma!""
I heard Daniel shouting.
"Vanessa, stop!""
Then the call disconnected.
I stared at the screen.
"Daniel?""
No answer.
I called again.
The phone was switched off.
Marcus immediately moved toward the door.
"Security team, prepare the vehicles.""
Arthur stood.
"Nobody goes to the Whitmore estate without police support.""
I turned toward him.
"We can't leave her there.""
"We won't.""
He looked at Marcus.
"Contact Detective Harris. Tell her we have evidence of a child being held against her will.""
My mother grabbed my hand.
"Chloe, we need to go.""
I nodded.
But before we could leave, another call came through.
Detective Harris.
I answered.
"Mrs. Bennett, I need you to listen carefully.""
"What's happened?""
"We have received new information concerning your daughter's custody case.""
I felt my stomach tighten.
"What information?""
"An anonymous witness claims you have been attempting to abduct Olivia Whitmore.""
I stared.
"That's ridiculous.""
"There's more.""
The detective paused.
"Vanessa has submitted a recording allegedly showing you threatening her.""
I looked at Arthur.
He shook his head.
The detective continued.
"She is requesting an emergency protective order.""
"Against me?""
"Yes.""
I almost laughed.
"She's the one who struck my daughter.""
"I understand.""
Then the detective said something that made my blood run cold.
"The Whitmores are also claiming Olivia is not Richard Bennett's biological daughter.""
I looked at my mother.
She went pale.
"That's impossible," I whispered.
The detective continued.
"They've submitted a DNA report.""
Arthur took the phone.
"Detective, this is Arthur Bennett. That report is fraudulent.""
"Mr. Bennett, we'll investigate. But until the matter is clarified, I strongly advise you not to approach the Whitmore residence.""
My mother suddenly stepped forward.
"Tell her to ask Robert where he obtained the DNA sample.""
The detective paused.
"Who is speaking?""
"Elizabeth Bennett.""
Silence.
Then the detective said:
"Mrs. Bennett, are you aware that your death was officially recorded twenty years ago?""
My mother closed her eyes.
"Yes.""
"Then I think you need to come in immediately.""
Arthur took the phone back.
"We'll be there.""
The call ended.
I looked at my mother.
"How could they have a DNA report?""
She shook her head.
"I don't know.""
Then Marcus returned from the entrance.
"Mrs. Bennett, we have a visitor.""
I turned.
"Who?""
He looked at Arthur.
"Mr. Robert Whitmore.""
My grandfather's face hardened.
"What does he want?""
Marcus hesitated.
"He says he has brought Olivia.""
My heart began pounding.
I rushed toward the front windows.
A black sedan had stopped outside the gate.
The rear door opened.
A little girl stepped out.
She was wearing a pale pink coat.
She looked around nervously.
Then she saw me through the glass.
Her eyes widened.
She raised one hand.
"Chloe?""
I opened the front door.
"Olivia!""
But before I could reach her, Robert stepped out of the vehicle.
He placed a hand on her shoulder.
Then he looked directly at me.
"Good afternoon, Chloe.""
His smile was cold.
"I believe we have a family matter to settle.""
He handed Marcus a document.
"Before anyone takes that child anywhere, perhaps you should read this.""
Arthur stepped forward.
"What is it?""
Robert looked at me.
"A DNA report.""
Then he smiled.
"Apparently, Richard Bennett wasn't Olivia's father.""
My mother appeared behind me.
Robert's smile vanished.
For the first time in twenty years, he was standing face-to-face with the woman he had tried to erase.
Elizabeth took one step forward.
"Hello, Robert.""
May you like
His face turned white.
And Olivia quietly slipped her hand out of his.
