Chapter 7: The Man Who Came Back From the Dead
The car door slammed again.
Everyone in the conference room turned toward the windows.
Marcus immediately touched his earpiece.
"Security, identify the visitors at the east entrance. Nobody approaches the house without clearance.""
Arthur gripped his walking stick.
"Margaret, you said Thomas was coming with Daniel?""
Margaret nodded nervously.
"That's what he told me.""
I looked at her.
"Why would my husband bring my uncle here?""
She shook her head.
"I don't know. But Thomas said he had something important to tell you. He insisted Daniel had to come with him.""
Arthur's expression hardened.
"That doesn't make sense. Thomas has been hiding from us for twenty years. Why would he suddenly trust Daniel?""
Margaret lowered her eyes.
"Because Daniel was the one who found him.""
My stomach tightened.
Before I could ask another question, Marcus returned.
"Sir, it's Mr. Whitmore.""
"Which one?""
"Daniel.""
"And the other visitor?""
Marcus hesitated.
"An older gentleman. He has identified himself as Thomas Bennett.""
My grandfather closed his eyes.
For a moment, he looked as if he had aged another ten years.
Then he straightened.
"Bring them to the west entrance. Search them first.""
I stood.
"Grandpa, I want to see him.""
Arthur turned toward me.
"Chloe, you don't know what you're walking into.""
"I know he's my uncle.""
"And he may have been involved in your father's death.""
I looked directly at him.
"Then I deserve to hear the truth from his own mouth.""
Arthur studied me.
Finally, he nodded.
"Stay beside Marcus.""
A few minutes later, the conference room doors opened.
Daniel entered first.
His dark teal blazer was gone. He wore a black shirt beneath his coat, and his hair looked as though he'd run his hands through it repeatedly.
His eyes immediately found mine.
"Chloe.""
I didn't move.
Behind him stood a man with gray hair, a weathered face, and a slight limp.
Thomas Bennett.
My uncle.
The man whose photograph had hung in my childhood home.
The man everyone said had abandoned the family.
He looked at Arthur.
"Father.""
My grandfather didn't answer.
Thomas swallowed.
"I know I don't deserve to be here.""
Arthur's voice was cold.
"You're right about that.""
Thomas lowered his head.
Then he looked at me.
"Chloe.""
I stared at him.
"Do I know you?""
His face crumpled.
"You used to call me Uncle Tommy.""
I remembered something.
A man lifting me onto his shoulders.
A red toy airplane.
A voice laughing as I chased bubbles through the garden.
But the memories were distant and fragmented.
"Why did you leave?"" I asked.
Thomas looked at Arthur.
"Because I was a coward.""
Daniel stepped forward.
"Chloe, please. Let him explain.""
I turned toward my husband.
"Why are you here?""
He rubbed his forehead.
"Because your uncle contacted me.""
"Why you?""
"Because I found him.""
I laughed bitterly.
"Of course you did.""
Daniel looked wounded.
"Can you stop treating me like I'm the enemy for five minutes?""
I stared at him.
"Have you forgotten what was on that recording?""
His jaw tightened.
"No.""
"Then perhaps you should stop asking me to trust you.""
Thomas moved toward the table.
"Please. We don't have much time.""
Arthur pointed toward the chair.
"Sit down.""
Thomas obeyed.
Daniel remained standing.
My grandfather looked at his son.
"Start talking.""
Thomas folded his hands.
"Twenty years ago, Robert Whitmore approached me with a proposal. He wanted access to Bennett Global's overseas accounts.""
Arthur's expression didn't change.
"I know.""
Thomas looked surprised.
"You know?""
"I've spent twenty years trying to understand what you did.""
Thomas nodded slowly.
"Robert told me the company was going to collapse unless someone took control. He promised that the Whitmores would make us wealthy.""
"And you believed him?"" Arthur asked.
"I wanted to.""
Thomas stared at his hands.
"Richard discovered the transfers. He threatened to report everything. Robert became frightened. He said Richard would destroy all of us.""
My throat tightened.
"What happened the night Dad died?""
Thomas looked at me.
For several seconds, he couldn't speak.
Then he said, "I was driving.""
Arthur's walking stick struck the floor.
"Continue.""
"Richard was in the passenger seat. We argued. He told me he had copied the documents and sent them to someone outside the company.""
"Who?"" I asked.
Thomas shook his head.
"He never told me.""
"Then?""
"Robert called me. He told me to bring Richard to a private meeting. He said they could settle everything.""
Thomas paused.
"But when we arrived, two men were waiting.""
My fingers went cold.
"What men?""
"I didn't know them. They approached the car. Richard recognized one of them.""
"Who?""
Thomas closed his eyes.
"Robert Whitmore.""
Arthur looked as if he might collapse.
Thomas continued.
"Richard tried to get out. One of the men grabbed him. I panicked. I started the car.""
His voice broke.
"I heard a gunshot.""
I covered my mouth.
"What?""
Thomas looked at me.
"Richard was bleeding. I drove away because I was terrified. A few minutes later, the car went off the road.""
The room fell silent.
I felt sick.
"Was Dad alive when the car crashed?""
Thomas nodded.
"He was conscious.""
I stared at him.
"Then why didn't you save him?""
Thomas began crying.
"Because I was afraid they would kill me too.""
Arthur's face turned red.
"You left your brother to die?""
"I was twenty-eight years old!""
"Richard was your brother!""
Thomas covered his face.
"I know!""
His voice echoed through the room.
"I know what I did.""
Daniel finally spoke.
"Chloe, that's why I brought him here. He has the original evidence.""
I turned toward him.
"How convenient.""
He pulled a small envelope from his coat.
"Your father left something behind. Thomas kept it hidden all these years.""
He placed it on the table.
Arthur opened the envelope.
Inside was a handwritten note.
The paper was yellowed and creased.
Arthur recognized the handwriting immediately.
"Richard.""
My grandfather read the first few lines silently.
Then his hands began trembling.
"What does it say?"" I asked.
Arthur looked at me.
"Your father wrote this the night before he died.""
He handed me the paper.
I read it slowly.
Father,
If anything happens to me, please don't blame Thomas immediately. He has made terrible decisions, but Robert has found a way to control him.
The evidence is no longer in the office.
Margaret knows where to find it.
And there is one person who can expose the entire arrangement.
Protect Chloe.
Whatever happens, protect my little girl.
I stopped reading.
My eyes filled.
My father had known something terrible was coming.
He had thought about me.
Even in the final hours of his life, he had been trying to protect me.
I pressed the paper against my chest.
Then I looked at Thomas.
"Why didn't you come forward?""
He wiped his eyes.
"Robert threatened my daughter.""
I froze.
"Your daughter?""
Thomas nodded.
"Olivia.""
I looked at the photograph Margaret had shown us.
My father's other child.
"Where is she?""
Thomas glanced at Daniel.
Daniel looked away.
"She's safe," Thomas said.
"For now.""
I stood.
"Where?""
"At a private residence outside the city.""
"Who has her?""
Thomas hesitated.
"Robert.""
I felt my blood turn cold.
Arthur slammed his hand against the table.
"Enough! You will tell us exactly where she is.""
Thomas looked frightened.
"I can't.""
"Why?""
"Because Robert knows I came here.""
Daniel suddenly stepped forward.
"He's right.""
I turned.
"What?""
Daniel looked at Marcus.
"We need to move Olivia before Robert realizes Thomas has spoken.""
I stared at him.
"How do you know where she is?""
He swallowed.
"Because I arranged the location.""
Silence.
I slowly walked toward him.
"You arranged it?""
"Chloe, I can explain.""
"You knew where my father's daughter was all this time?""
Daniel looked down.
"Yes.""
I felt as if the floor had disappeared beneath me.
"How long?""
"About a year.""
"And you never told me?""
"I was trying to protect her.""
I laughed in disbelief.
"You were trying to protect her? From whom? The same people you were working with?""
Daniel's face tightened.
"I made mistakes.""
"Stop calling them mistakes!""
My voice cracked.
"You knew my father had another child. You knew my uncle was alive. You knew about the fraud.
You knew about the recording. And you let me believe I was living in a normal marriage.""
He reached for my hand.
I pulled away.
"Don't touch me.""
Daniel looked devastated.
Then he said something that made my grandfather go completely still.
"Chloe, I didn't know Vanessa was going to hit Lily.""
I stared at him.
"What does that have to do with anything?""
He took a breath.
"Vanessa told me she had arranged for someone to distract you during dinner. She said she would make sure you left the room before the papers were presented.""
I stepped back.
"She planned it.""
Daniel nodded.
"She wanted you upset enough to sign without reading everything.""
My stomach turned.
"And Lily?""
Daniel looked at the floor.
"Vanessa said Lily was supposed to be taken upstairs.""
"By whom?""
He didn't answer.
I grabbed the table.
"Daniel!""
He finally looked at me.
"By the nanny.""
The room went silent.
I felt something inside me snap.
"They planned to separate me from my daughter?""
Daniel's eyes filled.
"I didn't agree to that.""
"But you knew about the plan.""
"I found out that evening.""
"And you said nothing.""
He looked at me.
"I was trying to stop it.""
"By sitting at the table?""
He had no answer.
My grandfather turned toward Marcus.
"Get Daniel out of this room.""
Daniel immediately protested.
"Arthur, wait. There's something else you need to know.""
Arthur didn't move.
"Speak.""
Daniel looked at me.
"Robert has already contacted the authorities. He's preparing to have Lily removed from Chloe's care.""
I felt my heart stop.
"What?""
"He has witnesses. Vanessa has filed her complaint. Robert has statements from people claiming Chloe has been unstable.""
Arthur's voice became dangerously quiet.
"He will not get near that child.""
Daniel nodded.
"There's more.""
He took out his phone.
He showed us a photograph.
It was Lily.
Standing outside the Whitmore mansion.
Taken that very evening.
I recognized her cream dress.
My little girl had been photographed without my knowledge.
Daniel's voice dropped.
"Robert has been watching her for months.""
I couldn't breathe.
Then another message appeared on Daniel's screen.
A message from Vanessa.
The child is the only thing Chloe still cares about. If she won't cooperate, we use the custody petition.
I stared at the words.
Then I looked at Daniel.
"Get out.""
"Chloe—"
"GET OUT!""
Marcus moved toward him.
But before Daniel could leave, Thomas grabbed his arm.
"Wait!""
Everyone turned.
Thomas looked at Arthur.
"There's one more thing you need to know.""
My grandfather's expression was hard.
"What?""
Thomas looked at me.
"Robert didn't just arrange Richard's death.""
He swallowed.
"He also arranged the accident that killed your mother.""
The room seemed to stop moving.
My mother.
The woman whose face I barely remembered.
I stared at Thomas.
"That's not possible.""
Thomas shook his head.
"She found the documents after your father died. Robert was afraid she would expose him.""
Arthur gripped the edge of the table.
"Who was driving the car?""
Thomas looked directly at me.
Then he whispered:
"Your mother wasn't in the driver's seat.""
He pointed toward the door.
"Margaret was.""
And suddenly, the woman sitting quietly at the other end of the table began screaming.
"THAT'S A LIE!""
Margaret stood.
May you like
Her face was white.
And she was holding a small silver pistol.
