Chapter 4: The Secret Buried Beneath the Estate

"Your father?""

I repeated the words because they seemed impossible to understand.

My father had been dead for twenty years.

He had died in a car accident when I was seven. My mother had passed away shortly afterward, and my grandfather had raised me in the Bennett estate.

Growing up, I had been told that my father was a brilliant businessman who had made a few unfortunate investments before his death.

Nothing more.

No scandal.

No betrayal.

Certainly nothing involving the Whitmore family.

"Grandpa, what are you saying?""

Arthur Bennett looked older than I had ever seen him.

He walked toward the library, leaning heavily on his walking stick.

"Come with me, Chloe.""

I followed him.

Marcus remained near the hallway, speaking quietly into his earpiece.

The grandfather clock struck one in the morning as we entered the library.

Arthur locked the door.

Then he placed the small brass key on the desk.

"Your father wasn't the man I believed he was," he said.

I pulled out a chair.

"Please explain.""

Arthur stared at the fire.

"Twenty-three years ago, Bennett Global was expanding into international shipping. Your father, Richard, was responsible for overseeing several major acquisitions.""

I nodded.

I'd seen photographs of my father in the company archives.

He had always looked confident, handsome, and impossibly young.

"He was talented," Arthur continued.

"But he was also trusting. Too trusting.""

"Trusting whom?""

"The Whitmores.""

My stomach tightened.

Arthur opened a drawer and removed an old photograph.

It showed three men standing outside a hotel.

One was my grandfather.

Another was a much younger Robert Whitmore.

The third was my father.

"They were business partners," Arthur explained.

"Robert convinced your father to approve a series of overseas transactions. Millions of dollars moved through companies that appeared legitimate.""

"And?""

"Those companies were controlled by the Whitmores.""

I stared at him.

"Did Dad know?""

"At first, no. When he discovered the truth, he confronted Robert.""

Arthur placed another photograph beside the first.

This one showed my father standing outside an office building, his face tense.

"Your father wanted to report everything. He believed the evidence was enough to destroy Robert's business.""

"What happened?""

Arthur's jaw tightened.

"Before he could expose them, he died.""

The room seemed to shrink.

"You're saying the accident wasn't an accident?""

My grandfather didn't answer immediately.

"I have never been able to prove that.""

I covered my mouth.

For years, I had remembered my father as the man who carried me on his shoulders and bought me strawberry ice cream after school.

Now I was being told that his death might have been connected to the same family I had married into.

"Why didn't you tell me?""

"Because you were seven years old. And because I had no proof.""

He sat down slowly.

"Your grandmother discovered the financial records after his death. She hid them somewhere safe. Before she passed away, she told me that the truth would eventually find its way back to this family.""

I looked at the brass key.

"And you think it's in the archive?""

"I know it is.""

Arthur stood and walked toward the bookcase.

Behind an old painting was a narrow wooden panel.

He pressed a small brass ornament.

A hidden lock appeared.

He inserted the key.

The mechanism clicked.

The panel opened.

Beyond it was a narrow staircase descending into darkness.

I stared.

"I've lived here my entire life.""

Arthur gave me a tired smile.

"Your grandmother enjoyed secrets.""

He took a flashlight from the shelf.

We descended together.

The air smelled of old paper and cedarwood. At the bottom was a small room lined with metal cabinets.

A single desk stood in the center.

Arthur opened the first cabinet.

Inside were folders arranged by year.

He pulled out one marked RICHARD BENNETT.

My father's name.

My hands began shaking.

"Open it," he said.

I lifted the cover.

There were photographs, bank statements, handwritten notes, and copies of old contracts.

Then I found a sealed envelope.

My name was written across the front.

Chloe.

I stared at it.

"Grandpa?""

Arthur stepped closer.

"That's your grandmother's handwriting.""

I carefully opened the envelope.

Inside was a letter.

My dearest Chloe,

If you are reading this, then something has happened that your grandfather could not prevent.

I pray you have grown into a woman who knows her worth.

Your father was not a criminal. He was a good man who trusted the wrong people.

The Whitmores took advantage of him. But they did not succeed in taking everything.

There is one document that proves who controlled the fraudulent companies. Your father made a copy before his death.

Do not let anyone convince you that the truth is too dangerous to uncover.

And remember something, sweetheart.

The greatest betrayal does not always come from an enemy.

Sometimes it comes from someone who knows exactly where you keep your heart.

I stopped reading.

My eyes were wet.

Arthur placed a hand on my shoulder.

"Your grandmother knew what she was doing.""

I wiped my face.

"Where is the document?""

He pointed toward the last cabinet.

I opened it.

There were several envelopes and a small black metal box.

The box had a combination lock.

Arthur tried a date.

Nothing.

He tried another.

Nothing.

I looked at the letter again.

Then I noticed something written in the bottom corner.

A tiny number.

0614.

I entered it.

The lock clicked.

Inside was a small USB drive, a folded document, and a photograph.

I picked up the photograph first.

It showed my father standing beside a young woman.

I recognized her immediately.

Evelyn Carter.

Only she looked much younger.

Behind them stood Robert Whitmore.

I turned the photograph over.

There was a handwritten note.

Richard, Evelyn knows everything. Keep her away from Robert.

My stomach tightened.

"Why was Evelyn with my father?""

Arthur frowned.

"I don't know.""

I opened the folded document.

It was a list of company registrations.

Several names appeared repeatedly.

Then I noticed one.

Whitmore International Holdings.

And beneath it was a signature.

Richard Bennett.

I stared.

"Grandpa, this says Dad approved the company.""

Arthur took the paper.

His eyes moved across the page.

Then he shook his head.

"No.""

"What?""

"This signature is genuine, but look at the date.""

I checked.

It was dated six months after my father's death.

I stepped back.

"That's impossible.""

Arthur's face turned pale.

"Someone used your father's identity after he died.""

A sound came from upstairs.

Three sharp knocks.

Marcus's voice followed.

"Mr. Bennett?""

Arthur turned.

"What is it?""

"We have a problem.""

We climbed the stairs quickly.

Marcus was standing in the library with a tablet.

His expression was unusually tense.

"Sir, the estate's outer security system detected an unauthorized access attempt.""

Arthur frowned.

"From where?""

Marcus looked at me.

"Your husband's office.""

I felt my stomach drop.

"Daniel?""

"We're not certain, ma'am. But someone using credentials associated with Whitmore Holdings attempted to access the Bennett family archive remotely.""

Arthur took the tablet.

"Shut it down.""

"Already done.""

Then Marcus hesitated.

"There's something else.""

He turned the screen toward us.

A photograph showed a man standing outside the estate's east entrance.

Wearing a dark coat.

His face was partially hidden.

But I recognized the watch.

It was Daniel's.

My phone began ringing.

His name appeared.

I stared at it.

Arthur shook his head.

"Don't answer.""

But I did.

"Chloe," Daniel said immediately.

His voice was frantic.

"Listen to me. You need to leave your grandfather's house.""

I froze.

"Why?""

"Because he isn't telling you the truth.""

I looked at Arthur.

Daniel continued.

"Your grandfather knows what happened to your father. And if you keep digging, you're going to discover that the Bennett family has been hiding something much worse than the Whitmores.""

My fingers tightened around the phone.

"What are you talking about?""

Daniel lowered his voice.

"Chloe, I came to protect you.""

Then the call disconnected.

And before I could call him back, Marcus announced something that made my blood run cold.

"Mrs. Bennett, we just found a vehicle abandoned near the north gate.""

He paused.

"There's a woman inside.""

"Who?""

May you like

Marcus looked directly at me.

"Evelyn Carter.""
