Chapter 8: The Woman Who Had Been Hiding the Truth
"Everyone, stay where you are!""
Marcus moved immediately.
Two security officers entered through the side door.
Margaret's hand trembled.
The small pistol was pointed toward the floor, but her finger remained dangerously close to the trigger.
I couldn't move.
"Miss Margaret?""
She looked at me.
Her eyes were filled with tears.
"I'm sorry, Chloe.""
Marcus slowly raised both hands.
"Margaret, put the weapon down.""
She shook her head.
"You don't understand.""
Arthur stood between her and me.
"Put it down.""
Margaret looked at him.
"I did everything you asked me to do.""
Arthur frowned.
"What?""
"Twenty years ago. After Richard died. You told me to keep the records safe. You told me not to speak to anyone.""
My grandfather's expression changed.
"I never told you to hide the truth about my daughter-in-law's death.""
Margaret began crying.
"Because you didn't know!""
I felt my stomach tighten.
"Know what?""
She looked at me.
"Your mother was already dead before the accident.""
The room fell silent.
I took a step backward.
"What are you saying?""
Margaret lowered the gun slightly.
"Your mother discovered that Robert had been using your father's identity to move money. She found the original records. She wanted to take them to the police.""
Arthur's voice was barely audible.
"Why didn't you tell me?""
Margaret looked at him.
"Because Robert threatened Chloe.""
I shook my head.
"Me?""
She nodded.
"Your mother was terrified. She believed they would come after you if she exposed the Whitmores.""
I remembered almost nothing about my mother's final days.
Only fragments.
A perfume bottle.
A lullaby.
The feeling of being carried through a dark hallway.
Margaret continued.
"She asked me to help her escape with you.""
"Then what happened?""
Margaret's eyes filled.
"We were driving toward the airport when Robert's men found us.""
She looked at the floor.
"They forced the car off the road.""
Arthur covered his mouth.
"Was she alive?""
Margaret nodded.
"Yes.""
My knees weakened.
"Was she alive after the crash?""
Margaret closed her eyes.
"Yes.""
I felt my entire body go cold.
"What happened?""
"One of the men came back. He opened the driver's door. Your mother was injured, but she was conscious.""
Margaret's voice broke.
"He took the documents from her bag. Then he left.""
I couldn't speak.
"What about you?""
"I was in the passenger seat. I had been driving.""
She looked at the pistol.
"I escaped through the broken window. I ran into the woods and hid until morning.""
"And my mother?""
Margaret started crying harder.
"By the time I returned, she was gone.""
Arthur's face had become pale.
"Who took her?""
Margaret looked at him.
"Robert.""
I felt something collapse inside me.
For twenty years, I had believed my parents died in separate tragedies.
My father in a car accident.
My mother from injuries sustained in another accident.
I had grown up thinking fate had simply been cruel.
But someone had taken my mother away.
Someone had allowed me to believe she was dead.
And someone had made sure I never learned the truth.
"Where is she?"" I whispered.
Margaret shook her head.
"I don't know.""
I stepped toward her.
"You don't know?""
"I swear to you, Chloe. I don't know.""
Marcus was still watching the weapon.
"Margaret, please put it down.""
She looked at me again.
"I kept quiet because Robert said he would destroy you if I spoke. Then he offered me a job. He said if I stayed close to him, I could protect you.""
I stared at her.
"You worked for him for eleven years.""
"I was trying to find out what happened to your mother.""
"And you never told me.""
"I was afraid.""
I shook my head.
"Everyone was afraid. Everyone except the people who hurt us.""
Margaret's hand trembled.
The pistol slipped slightly.
Marcus moved.
One security officer caught her wrist while another took the weapon.
Margaret collapsed into the chair.
I stepped back.
Arthur looked at Marcus.
"Take the weapon. Have the police contacted. Nobody leaves this estate until we understand exactly what has happened.""
Marcus nodded.
Margaret began sobbing.
"Chloe, please.""
I couldn't look at her.
Not yet.
I walked out of the conference room.
My legs carried me down the hallway toward the east wing.
Lily was sitting on the carpet, coloring.
The moment she saw me, she stood.
"Mommy!""
She ran into my arms.
I dropped to my knees and hugged her.
"Hi, sweetheart.""
She looked at my face.
"Why are you crying?""
I wiped my cheeks.
"Sometimes grown-ups have to learn difficult things.""
She considered that.
Then she placed her little hand against my face.
"Do you want my rabbit?""
I smiled through my tears.
"Yes, please.""
She handed me the stuffed rabbit.
I hugged it against my chest.
For a moment, everything else disappeared.
Then my phone rang.
An unknown number.
I answered.
"Hello?""
A woman's voice spoke.
"Is this Chloe Bennett?""
"Yes.""
"My name is Detective Harris. I'm calling regarding the complaint filed by Vanessa Whitmore.""
I closed my eyes.
"Yes?""
"We've reviewed the initial statements. Your sister-in-law alleges that you assaulted her without provocation and removed Lily from the Whitmore residence.""
"That's not what happened.""
"I understand. We have also received a report suggesting your daughter may be at risk.""
I immediately straightened.
"At risk from whom?""
"That's what we're trying to establish.""
I looked toward Lily.
"She's safe with me.""
The detective paused.
"Mrs. Bennett, I'd like you to come in for a formal statement.""
"Will I be arrested?""
"Not at this stage. But the Whitmores have requested an emergency custody review.""
My heart pounded.
"When?""
"Tomorrow morning.""
The call ended.
I stood frozen.
Arthur appeared at the end of the hallway.
He had heard enough.
"They're moving quickly.""
I nodded.
"They want Lily.""
"They won't get her.""
He took out his phone.
"Call our family attorney.""
But before he could make another call, Marcus appeared.
"Mr. Bennett, we've received an urgent update.""
Arthur turned.
"What now?""
"The Whitmore family has filed a motion requesting temporary custody of Lily.""
I held my daughter closer.
"On what grounds?""
Marcus looked uncomfortable.
"They claim you have been involved in a series of unstable and threatening confrontations.""
I stared.
"That's absurd.""
"They've also submitted a statement from a medical professional.""
Arthur frowned.
"Which professional?""
Marcus showed him the document.
Arthur read it.
Then his expression changed.
"Dr. Collins?""
I looked at the page.
The report claimed I had suffered from emotional instability and displayed signs of behavior that could place my daughter at risk.
But the signature at the bottom belonged to Lily's pediatrician.
Dr. Collins.
The same doctor who had examined her the previous night.
I felt sick.
"How could he sign this?""
Arthur immediately called him.
No answer.
He called again.
Still nothing.
Then Marcus's phone rang.
He listened.
His face changed.
"Sir, the Whitmore estate has just reported a missing person.""
Arthur lowered his phone.
"Who?""
Marcus looked at me.
"Dr. Collins.""
I felt my heart drop.
"What do you mean missing?""
"He hasn't been seen since leaving his clinic this morning.""
Arthur's jaw tightened.
"Find him.""
Marcus nodded.
Then he added something that made me feel as if the walls were closing in.
"The report was submitted electronically at 8:14 this morning.""
I looked at the document.
"Who submitted it?""
Marcus checked his tablet.
"An account registered to Whitmore Holdings.""
I stared at him.
"Daniel?""
"Yes, ma'am.""
I looked down at Lily.
She was quietly coloring a picture of our family.
Her little drawing had three figures.
Me.
Her.
And Daniel.
I swallowed.
"Grandpa, we need to speak to the police.""
Arthur nodded.
"Agreed.""
But just as we began walking toward the library, the front door opened.
A woman entered.
She was wearing a beige coat, carrying a small leather handbag.
Her hair was dark, with silver at the temples.
She looked directly at me.
Then she whispered:
"Chloe?""
I froze.
Something about her face felt familiar.
She took one step forward.
"I'm sorry it took me so long.""
Arthur stopped breathing.
His walking stick slipped from his hand.
The woman looked at him.
"Hello, Father.""
My heart began pounding.
I looked from her to my grandfather.
Then back again.
Arthur's lips trembled.
"Elizabeth?""
The woman nodded.
"Yes.""
My mother.
My mother was standing in front of me.
Alive.
I couldn't move.
I couldn't speak.
For twenty years, I had believed she was gone.
Now she was looking at me with tears running down her face.
"Chloe, sweetheart.""
I took one step backward.
"No.""
She reached toward me.
"Please.""
"No!""
My voice cracked.
"You're dead.""
Her face crumpled.
"I know what they told you.""
I shook my head.
"You're dead. I saw your photograph. I went to your funeral.""
Arthur stepped between us.
"Elizabeth, what happened?""
My mother looked at him.
"Robert kept me hidden.""
The room fell silent.
"He told me that if I ever contacted Chloe, he would make sure she suffered.""
I stared at her.
"Why didn't you come back?""
She began crying.
"I tried.""
"When?""
"Several times. But he always found me.""
I felt anger rising through the shock.
"You let me grow up thinking you were dead.""
She lowered her head.
"I know.""
"You let me cry for you.""
"I know.""
"You let me think I had nobody!""
Her tears fell faster.
"I'm sorry.""
I couldn't bear to look at her.
Then Lily stepped out from behind my legs.
She stared at the stranger.
"Mommy, who is she?""
My mother looked at her.
Her expression softened.
"Is this Lily?""
I nodded slowly.
My mother knelt.
"Hello, sweetheart.""
Lily looked at me.
"Mommy?""
I didn't know what to say.
Then my mother whispered something that made Arthur turn pale.
"Chloe, I didn't come here just to see you.""
She reached into her handbag.
She removed a photograph.
It showed a young man standing beside my father.
Behind them was Robert Whitmore.
But there was another person in the picture.
A woman.
I recognized her immediately.
Vanessa Whitmore.
My mother looked at me.
"Your father didn't die because of the money.""
I stared at her.
"Then why?""
She swallowed.
"Because Richard discovered that Robert was using a child to hide the real ownership of Bennett Global.""
I looked at the photograph.
My mother continued.
"And that child wasn't you.""
She pointed to the little girl standing beside my father.
"Chloe, the girl in this photograph is Olivia.""
My father's other daughter.
My half-sister.
The child Robert had hidden.
My mother leaned closer.
"She's been living in the Whitmore mansion.""
I felt the room tilt.
"Where?""
My mother looked toward the front doors.
"Upstairs.""
May you like
Then she whispered:
"She's Vanessa's daughter.""
