Chapter 3: The Black SUV at the Gate

The first thing I heard was the low rumble of an engine.

Then I saw the headlights.

A black SUV stood beyond the entrance steps, its polished surface reflecting the golden lights of the Bennett estate.

Behind it were two more dark vehicles.

Three men in perfectly tailored black suits stood beside the lead SUV.

They weren't drivers waiting for a wealthy guest.

They were positioned with deliberate precision.

One stood near the front gate. Another watched the driveway. The third was beside the rear passenger door.

As soon as he saw me, the man beside the SUV straightened.

"Good evening, Mrs. Bennett.""

Daniel stopped behind me.

His expression changed from irritation to confusion.

"What is this?""

I didn't answer.

The suited man approached the steps.

"Mrs. Bennett, we've been waiting for your instructions.""

I gently rubbed Lily's back.

"Thank you, Marcus.""

Marcus nodded respectfully.

"Of course, ma'am.""

Then he opened the rear passenger door.

Daniel stared at him.

"Who are those people?""

I adjusted Lily's little cream-colored dress.

Daniel stepped outside.

"Chloe, did you call them?""

I walked toward the SUV.

"Yes.""

"Why?""

I paused.

For the first time that evening, I looked directly into his eyes without anger.

"Because I knew I would need a safe way to leave.""

He looked between me and the men.

"Since when do you have people waiting outside?""

I didn't answer immediately.

Because the truth was, Daniel had never really asked much about my life before I married him.

He knew I had grown up in a comfortable home.

He knew my mother had died when I was young.

He knew I had a grandfather who occasionally sent birthday gifts.

But he had never asked why my grandfather's gifts always arrived through private couriers.

He had never wondered why certain people addressed me with unusual formality.

And he had never been interested in the family I had deliberately stepped away from.

To Daniel, I had been Chloe.

A quiet woman with a modest wardrobe, a simple car, and no interest in showing off.

He had assumed that marrying into the Bennett family meant I had become dependent on them.

He was wrong.

Marcus looked at Lily.

"Would you like me to bring her a blanket, ma'am?""

"Please.""

He reached into the SUV and retrieved a soft cream-colored blanket.

I wrapped it around Lily's shoulders.

She looked up at the unfamiliar men.

"Mommy, who are they?""

I kissed her forehead.

"They're here to help us, sweetheart.""

"Are they our friends?""

Marcus smiled gently.

"We're here for you, princess.""

Lily gave him a tiny nod.

Daniel approached.

"Chloe, I think you owe me an explanation.""

I turned toward him.

"Do I?""

"Yes. You suddenly arrive at my family dinner with three black SUVs and bodyguards? What is going on?""

I looked at him.

"You've spent the last hour asking me not to embarrass you. Perhaps you should worry less about what other people think.""

His face reddened.

"That's not what I meant.""

"Then what did you mean?""

He glanced at the men.

"Who are they?""

Marcus answered calmly.

"My name is Marcus Hale. I'm responsible for Mrs. Bennett's security arrangements.""

Daniel frowned.

"Security arrangements?""

"Yes, sir.""

"Who employs you?""

Marcus looked toward me.

I gave a small nod.

"My employer is Mrs. Bennett.""

Daniel stared.

"Your employer?""

I almost smiled.

The words sounded strange coming from him.

He had spent five years believing that I was the woman who needed his permission to make decisions.

He had never realized that I had simply chosen not to compete with him.

I had never needed to.

Behind us, the front doors opened again.

Victoria appeared in the doorway, holding a cold napkin against her cheek.

Richard and Eleanor stood behind her.

"What is all this?"" Victoria demanded.

She came down two steps, then stopped when she saw the vehicles.

Her eyes moved over the black SUVs.

Then the suited men.

Then the open passenger door.

"What is happening?""

Daniel turned toward her.

"I don't know.""

Victoria looked at me.

"Chloe, are you trying to make a spectacle of yourself?""

I didn't respond.

She pointed toward the SUV.

"Where did you get these people?""

Marcus took one quiet step forward.

"Ma'am, please keep your distance.""

Victoria blinked.

"Excuse me?""

"We've been instructed to ensure Mrs. Bennett and her daughter can leave without interference.""

Victoria laughed.

"Interference? This is a family matter!""

Marcus remained expressionless.

"That is not for me to decide.""

Daniel moved toward him.

"Listen, I don't know who you think you are, but I'm her husband.""

Marcus looked at him.

"Understood, sir.""

"Then step aside.""

"I'm afraid I cannot do that.""

Daniel's mouth tightened.

"Do you know who I am?""

"Yes, sir.""

"Then you know the Bennett family.""

Marcus nodded politely.

"I do.""

Daniel seemed satisfied for half a second.

Then Marcus continued.

"But my responsibility is to Mrs. Bennett.""

The silence that followed was almost beautiful.

Victoria stared at Marcus.

Eleanor looked genuinely alarmed.

Richard stepped forward.

"Chloe, what is the meaning of this?""

I turned toward him.

"It's exactly what it looks like. I'm leaving.""

"Over a misunderstanding?""

I looked at the man who had watched his granddaughter's daughter get slapped and then asked everyone to calm down.

"Mr. Bennett, there was nothing misunderstood about what happened.""

Eleanor hurried down the steps.

"Chloe, darling, let's not be dramatic. Lily is fine. Children are resilient.""

I felt Lily's fingers tighten around my neck.

I looked at Eleanor.

"She has a red handprint on her cheek.""

Eleanor's expression faltered.

"Victoria didn't mean to hurt her.""

"Then she should have thought before raising her hand.""

Victoria snapped.

"She knocked over my drink!""

I turned to her.

"And you hit a child.""

"She was disrespectful!""

"She was five.""

Victoria threw her hands up.

"Oh, for heaven's sake!""

I looked at Daniel.

"Are you coming?""

He blinked.

"What?""

I glanced at Lily.

"Your daughter is leaving. Are you coming with us?""

For the first time that night, Daniel looked uncertain.

He glanced at his parents.

Then at Victoria.

Then back at me.

"Chloe, don't put me in this position.""

I stared at him.

"You're already in it.""

He lowered his voice.

"You're asking me to walk away from my family.""

I looked at the little girl in my arms.

"No, Daniel. I'm asking you to walk toward yours.""

He didn't move.

I waited.

Five seconds.

Ten.

Nothing.

Then Lily lifted her head from my shoulder.

"Daddy?""

Daniel immediately looked at her.

"Yes, sweetheart?""

She hesitated.

"Why didn't you help me?""

His face changed.

"Baby, I—"

"Did I do something bad?""

Daniel took a step toward her.

"No, Lily. You didn't do anything bad.""

"Then why did Aunt Victoria hit me?""

He opened his mouth.

But no answer came.

Lily rested her cheek against my shoulder again.

"Mommy, can we go now?""

I kissed her hair.

"Yes, baby.""

I climbed into the SUV.

Marcus carefully closed the door after making sure Lily was comfortable.

Through the tinted glass, I could see Daniel standing beneath the entrance lights.

He looked smaller somehow.

The man who had spent years telling me to be grateful for his family was now watching me leave in a vehicle he didn't recognize, surrounded by people who answered to me.

Marcus took his position beside the driver's door.

Before he got in, he looked toward me.

"Mrs. Bennett, would you like us to proceed to the residence?""

I nodded.

"Yes. And please contact the family office.""

Daniel suddenly hurried toward the vehicle.

"Chloe!""

Marcus stepped between him and the rear door.

Daniel stopped.

"Just tell me one thing!""

I lowered the window slightly.

His face was pale.

"Who are you, Chloe?""

For a moment, I said nothing.

Then I answered quietly.

"I'm the woman you married, Daniel. You just never bothered to find out who my family was.""

His eyebrows drew together.

"What does that mean?""

I looked toward Marcus.

He was already holding his phone.

"Ma'am," he said, "your grandfather has called three times. He wants to know whether Lily is safe.""

Daniel's expression changed.

"Your grandfather?""

I nodded.

"Tell him we're on our way.""

Marcus hesitated.

"There's one more thing, ma'am.""

"What is it?""

He glanced briefly at Daniel before lowering his voice.

"Your grandfather has already heard about the incident. He's requested an emergency meeting with the Bennett family's legal representatives tomorrow morning.""

Daniel went completely still.

"Legal representatives?""

I looked at him through the open window.

"Yes.""

His voice cracked slightly.

"Chloe, what exactly is your grandfather planning?""

I pulled the window up.

The SUV began moving.

And as the Bennett estate disappeared behind us, my phone lit up with a message.

May you like

It was from my grandfather.

*"Bring Lily home. It's time your husband learned the truth about the woman he married.""*
