Chapter 5: The Recording That Changed Everything
At 8:17 the following morning, I sat across from Laura Hayes in my grandfather's private conference room.
Laura was in her early forties. She wore a navy business suit and carried a leather handbag that looked as though it had seen years of use.
She had attended the previous evening's dinner with her husband, Richard's longtime business associate.
I remembered her.
She had been seated near the windows.
She was one of the few guests who had looked genuinely horrified when Victoria struck Lily.
Now she placed her phone on the table.
"Mrs. Bennett, I wasn't sure whether I should contact you.""
I folded my hands.
"Why did you?""
"Because what happened to your daughter wasn't an isolated incident.""
My stomach tightened.
"What do you mean?""
Laura glanced toward the closed conference room door.
"Victoria has a history of treating people badly when she thinks nobody important is watching.""
I didn't respond.
She unlocked her phone.
"I recorded part of the dinner because Victoria was arguing with another guest earlier. I didn't expect to capture what happened to Lily.""
She played the video.
The recording began with the dining room in the background.
Victoria was standing beside her chair, complaining about the juice.
Then Lily reached for her napkin.
The glass tipped.
Victoria's voice came through the phone.
"Look what you've done!""
Lily immediately apologized.
"I'm sorry.""
Victoria stepped closer.
"Do you know how expensive this dress is?""
Lily shook her head.
"I'm sorry, Aunt Victoria.""
Then came the slap.
I closed my eyes.
Even though I had witnessed it myself, hearing the sound again made my stomach turn.
Laura paused the recording.
"I'm sorry.""
I swallowed.
"Continue.""
The video resumed.
It showed Victoria adjusting her bracelet and looking toward Daniel.
Her voice was unmistakable.
"Daniel, you need to control your wife and that child.""
Daniel's response was quiet but audible.
"Victoria, don't start.""
Victoria laughed.
"Don't start? I'm the one who has to deal with her behavior every time we invite them somewhere.""
Then she leaned toward him.
And said something that made me stop breathing.
"Besides, you need Chloe's signature. Don't let this little incident ruin everything.""
The video ended.
I stared at the phone.
For several seconds, I couldn't speak.
Laura slowly turned it facedown.
"Did you hear that?""
I nodded.
"Yes.""
"She said something about your signature.""
I looked at her.
"Did you hear that before?""
Laura hesitated.
"Not exactly. But I heard Richard talking about it last month at a charity event.""
"What did he say?""
"He was discussing the waterfront development project. He said the family needed to secure the right guarantees before the end of the quarter.""
I felt a chill.
"Did he mention me?""
"Yes.""
Laura opened her handbag and removed a small notebook.
"I wrote it down because it seemed strange at the time.""
She turned to a page.
There were several handwritten notes.
One sentence had been underlined.
Richard: Once Chloe signs, the Whitmore issue becomes manageable.
I stared at the words.
"Why would they think I would sign something?""
Laura shook her head.
"I don't know. But Victoria seemed convinced you would.""
I sat back.
My grandfather had been right.
There was something happening behind my back.
"Mrs. Hayes, can you send me the original recording?""
"Of course.""
"And the notebook?""
She pushed it toward me.
"You can photograph it.""
I did.
Then I looked at her.
"Thank you for coming forward.""
Laura's expression softened.
"I have a daughter, too. She's six. If someone treated her that way, I would want somebody to tell me the truth.""
I nodded.
Before she left, she stopped near the door.
"One more thing.""
"Yes?""
"Daniel didn't seem surprised when Victoria mentioned your signature.""
I looked up.
Laura continued.
"He looked at her, then at the table. Almost as though he knew exactly what she was talking about.""
The door closed behind her.
I remained seated.
My daughter had been struck because of a few drops of juice.
But apparently, my husband's family had been waiting for something from me.
And the more I learned, the less I believed the dinner had been an ordinary family gathering.
At 9:30, my grandfather entered the conference room with two attorneys.
One was his personal legal adviser, Jonathan Reed.
The other was a woman named Evelyn Carter, who specialized in corporate investigations and financial disputes.
Arthur placed a cup of coffee beside me.
"How are you holding up?""
"Better.""
He looked at the recording on my laptop.
"Is that the guest's video?""
I nodded.
"Victoria mentioned my signature.""
Jonathan leaned forward.
"May I see the document she was referring to?""
I handed him the preliminary assessment from the previous evening.
He read it carefully.
Then he removed his glasses.
"Mr. Whitmore, this is concerning.""
Arthur folded his arms.
"Explain.""
Jonathan pointed to a section near the bottom.
"This document identifies Mrs. Bennett as a potential guarantor in a proposed financing arrangement. It appears to rely on her ownership interests in certain family assets.""
I frowned.
"Can they do that without my permission?""
"No," he said firmly.
"Not legitimately.""
Evelyn opened her laptop.
"We've already started checking the corporate records. So far, we haven't found a completed guarantee executed by you.""
"Then why does my name appear?""
"That is what we need to establish.""
Arthur pulled out another chair.
"Proceed.""
Evelyn displayed a spreadsheet.
"There's another issue. Bennett Development Group has been seeking a substantial financing package. The lender requested additional security. According to correspondence we've reviewed, Richard Bennett suggested that a family connection could make the transaction easier.""
I looked at the screen.
"Meaning me.""
"Potentially.""
Jonathan nodded.
"The problem is that your trust assets are separate. Marriage doesn't give Daniel or his family automatic authority over them.""
I looked at Arthur.
"Did Daniel know about the proposal?""
Arthur answered carefully.
"We don't know yet.""
I thought about Laura's recording.
"Victoria certainly knew something.""
Evelyn typed a note.
"We'll preserve the video and request the original documents through the proper legal channels.""
Then she turned toward me.
"There's one more thing. Have you ever signed blank forms or authorization documents for Daniel?""
"No.""
"Have you ever provided him with copies of your identification or financial information?""
I hesitated.
"Several years ago, when we bought our first house, I gave him a copy of my passport and some financial documents. He said the mortgage broker needed them.""
Jonathan looked at Evelyn.
"That may be relevant.""
My heart began beating faster.
"What does that mean?""
"It means we should determine whether those documents were used for any other purpose.""
Arthur's expression darkened.
"Do it.""
Evelyn nodded.
At 11:46, Daniel arrived at the estate.
Marcus called my phone.
"Mrs. Bennett, Mr. Daniel Bennett is at the front gate. He says he needs to see you.""
I looked toward my grandfather.
He was sitting across from me.
"Do you want to meet him?"" he asked.
I took a breath.
"Yes. But here.""
Arthur nodded.
"Your house. Your rules.""
Ten minutes later, Daniel entered the study.
He wore yesterday's dark teal blazer, although his white shirt was now slightly wrinkled.
His eyes moved around the room.
He had never been inside my grandfather's study before.
"Chloe.""
"Daniel.""
He looked at Arthur.
"Mr. Whitmore.""
My grandfather didn't stand.
"Daniel.""
Daniel cleared his throat.
"I'd like to speak with my wife privately.""
Arthur looked at me.
I shook my head.
"Whatever you have to say, you can say here.""
Daniel exhaled.
"Fine.""
He turned toward me.
"Victoria is furious. She's spoken to a lawyer.""
I remained silent.
"She says you assaulted her.""
"She struck Lily first.""
"That's not the point.""
I stared at him.
"Then what is the point?""
He rubbed his forehead.
"Chloe, I came here to fix this. Not to argue.""
"Have you asked how Lily is?""
His eyes shifted.
"How is she?""
"She's frightened.""
Daniel swallowed.
"Can I see her?""
"Not right now.""
"Chloe, she's my daughter.""
"Then you should have acted like her father yesterday.""
His jaw tightened.
Arthur finally spoke.
"Daniel, perhaps you should explain why your sister was discussing Chloe's signature at the dinner.""
Daniel went still.
"What?""
I took out my phone and played Laura's recording.
His face changed as Victoria's voice filled the study.
When the recording ended, he stared at the floor.
Arthur's voice was cold.
"Would you like to explain?""
Daniel shifted his weight.
"That was taken out of context.""
I almost laughed.
"Then provide the context.""
He looked at me.
"Chloe, there are business matters you don't understand.""
"Then explain them.""
He glanced at Arthur.
"This is between my wife and me.""
Arthur replied calmly.
"Then you shouldn't have involved her assets in your business matters.""
Daniel's eyes widened.
"What assets?""
I opened the folder.
I placed the proposed guarantee document on the desk.
He looked down.
Then he looked at me.
"Where did you get this?""
"That's an interesting question.""
He picked it up.
His fingers tightened around the paper.
"Who gave you this?""
"My grandfather's legal team.""
Daniel lowered the document.
"Chloe, I can explain.""
"Please do.""
He opened his mouth.
Then his phone rang.
The caller ID displayed Victoria.
He declined the call.
It rang again.
He declined it once more.
Finally, he answered.
"What?""
Victoria's voice was loud enough for everyone to hear.
"Daniel! Have you spoken to Chloe? Did you get her to sign?""
Daniel froze.
I looked directly at him.
My grandfather slowly leaned forward.
And Victoria continued.
"Because Dad says the bank needs those documents today, and if she refuses, we're finished!""
Daniel closed his eyes.
The room became completely silent.
I leaned back in my chair.
"Thank you, Victoria.""
Daniel looked at me.
May you like
I smiled without warmth.
"You just answered every question I had.""
