Chapter 7: The Sister-in-Law's Secret

Sophia's hands were shaking so badly that the flash drive slipped from her fingers and landed on my grandfather's desk.

Nobody moved.

I looked at her.

"What do you mean Victoria arranged the signature?""

Sophia swallowed.

"She found the documents you gave Daniel when you bought your first house. Your passport copy, your financial information, everything.""

My stomach tightened.

"How?""

Sophia glanced toward the door.

"Because she had access to Daniel's home office. She used to help Richard organize paperwork for the company.""

Arthur pulled out a chair.

"Sit down, Miss Bennett.""

Sophia hesitated before sitting.

Jonathan Reed collected the flash drive.

"Before we open this, I need to ask you something. How did you obtain these files?""

Sophia wiped her palms against her coat.

"Victoria sent them to my email by mistake.""

I frowned.

"By mistake?""

She nodded.

"She was forwarding something to Dad. I think she accidentally selected my address from the contact list. I received an email with several attachments. At first, I didn't understand what I was looking at.""

Jonathan examined the flash drive.

"Do you still have the original email?""

"Yes. I haven't deleted anything.""

"Good. Don't forward it or alter the attachments. We'll preserve the original.""

Sophia looked at me.

"Chloe, I'm sorry.""

I stared at her.

"For what?""

"For not telling you sooner.""

I didn't answer.

Sophia lowered her eyes.

"I knew Victoria was planning something. I didn't know she had already used your signature.""

Arthur leaned forward.

"What exactly did you know?""

Sophia took a shaky breath.

"Three months ago, I heard Victoria talking to Dad in his office. She said Chloe would sign anything Daniel put in front of her because she trusted him.""

I felt something cold settle in my chest.

"What did Richard say?""

Sophia looked down.

"He said that was the entire advantage of having you in the family.""

The words hung in the room.

Arthur's expression became dangerously still.

Sophia continued.

"Victoria laughed. She said you were too quiet to understand business anyway.""

I looked toward the window.

For years, I had allowed these people to mistake my silence for ignorance.

I had attended their dinners, listened to their conversations, and smiled when Victoria made little remarks about my clothes, my background, or my parenting.

I had never fought for attention.

I had never needed to.

But apparently, they had interpreted that as permission.

"Why are you telling me now?"" I asked.

Sophia's eyes filled with tears.

"Because I saw Lily last night.""

She covered her mouth.

"I saw her cheek. I saw how she looked at Daniel. And I realized that if I stayed silent again, I would be just as bad as everyone else.""

For a moment, I said nothing.

Then I asked, "Does Daniel know?""

Sophia nodded slowly.

"He knew about the financing plan. I'm not sure he knew about the forged signature.""

I leaned forward.

"You're his sister. Are you certain?""

She shook her head.

"No. But I heard him tell Dad that you would probably agree once he explained how important the deal was.""

My grandfather looked toward Jonathan.

"Open the files.""

Jonathan connected the flash drive to a separate computer.

Several folders appeared.

One contained financial projections.

Another contained scanned identity documents.

A third was labeled:

*WHITMORE GUARANTEE – FINAL PREPARATION.*

Jonathan opened it.

Inside were multiple versions of the guarantee proposal.

The first was dated six months earlier.

The second was dated four months earlier.

The third was dated three weeks earlier.

Then he opened a PDF.

My name appeared on the signature line.

Chloe Whitmore Bennett.

The signature looked disturbingly familiar.

Sophia covered her eyes.

"That's the one.""

Jonathan examined the metadata.

"This document was created on a company computer.""

Evelyn leaned over his shoulder.

"Can we identify the user account?""

Jonathan checked.

Then he stopped.

"Yes.""

He turned the screen toward us.

The document had been created under Victoria Bennett's company login.

I stared at the name.

"She made it herself?""

"According to this metadata, her account created the file. That doesn't, by itself, establish who physically prepared or altered the signature, but it gives us an important lead.""

Sophia nodded rapidly.

"She told Dad she had taken care of everything.""

Arthur looked at her.

"Did she say anything about the lender?""

Sophia reached into her handbag and removed a folded sheet of paper.

"There's more.""

She handed it to Jonathan.

It was a printed email.

The sender was Victoria.

The recipient was Richard.

The subject line read:

*Chloe's Approval.*

I read the message.

Dad, the authorization page is ready. Daniel just needs to get Chloe to complete the final paperwork. Once the lender sees the documents, we can proceed without further delays.

I looked up.

"She says the authorization is ready, but then says Daniel still needs to get me to complete the paperwork.""

Jonathan nodded.

"That distinction matters. We need to determine precisely what was submitted, what was represented to the lender, and whether anyone relied on it.""

Arthur's jaw tightened.

"Who approved the preliminary confirmation?""

Sophia looked at the floor.

"Dad.""

The room went quiet.

Then she added something that made Daniel's absence suddenly feel much more significant.

"And Daniel knew Victoria was preparing documents with your information.""

I stood.

"How do you know?""

Sophia began crying.

"Because I heard him tell her not to use anything that could be traced back to him.""

My grandfather slowly turned toward her.

"Repeat that.""

Sophia wiped her cheeks.

"He said, 'Just make sure the paperwork doesn't come back to me. Chloe will never check the details, and Dad needs this deal completed.''"

I felt my knees weaken.

Arthur immediately moved a chair behind me.

"Sit down, Chloe.""

I lowered myself into it.

For a moment, I couldn't hear anything except the ticking clock.

Daniel.

My husband.

The man who had held my hand at our wedding.

The man who had promised to protect our daughter.

Had apparently been discussing how to keep himself separated from a scheme involving my identity.

I looked at Sophia.

"Why didn't you come to me sooner?""

She lowered her head.

"Because I was afraid of Victoria.""

"Afraid of what?""

"She controls everything in that family. She knows everyone's secrets. She has threatened to tell Dad things about me that would ruin my relationship with him.""

Arthur's expression softened slightly.

"You're safe here, Sophia.""

She looked at him.

"Thank you.""

Jonathan closed the folder.

"We now have enough information to justify a formal investigation and immediate steps to protect Mrs. Bennett's identity and assets.""

I nodded.

"Do it.""

Evelyn gathered the documents.

"I'll also arrange for the lender to be notified that Mrs. Bennett disputes the alleged authorization. We need to make sure no further transaction proceeds on the assumption that she consented.""

Arthur looked at me.

"And what do you want to do about Daniel?""

I looked at the photograph of Lily on my phone.

"I want him to tell the truth.""

At 5:30 that evening, Daniel called.

I almost ignored it.

But something told me I needed to hear what he would say now that Sophia had spoken.

I answered.

"Hello?""

"Chloe.""

His voice sounded strained.

"Where is Sophia?""

I glanced at my grandfather.

"She's here.""

A long silence followed.

"She went to your grandfather's house?""

"Yes.""

Daniel exhaled sharply.

"Why would she do that?""

"Perhaps you should ask her.""

"Chloe, listen. Sophia doesn't understand the situation.""

I walked toward the window.

"She understands enough to bring evidence.""

His voice changed.

"What evidence?""

I said nothing.

He continued.

"Chloe, whatever she told you, don't believe everything. She's been having problems with Victoria for months.""

"Did you know Victoria prepared a document with my signature?""

Silence.

"Daniel?""

"I knew she was organizing some paperwork.""

"Did you know she used my passport?""

"Your documents were already available.""

I closed my eyes.

"That's not an answer.""

He sighed.

"Chloe, I never wanted this to happen.""

"Did you tell Victoria to make sure the paperwork couldn't be traced back to you?""

He didn't respond.

I felt my throat tighten.

"Daniel, did you?""

Finally, he spoke.

"I was trying to protect the company.""

I stared at the darkening sky.

There it was.

Not an apology.

Not a denial.

A justification.

I ended the call.

Then I blocked his number.

But the story wasn't over.

Because ten minutes later, Marcus entered the study.

"Mrs. Bennett, there's someone at the front gate.""

"Who?""

He hesitated.

"Richard Bennett.""

Arthur stood.

"Let him in.""

I looked at my grandfather.

"Why?""

Arthur adjusted his jacket.

"Because tomorrow's meeting has apparently started a day early.""

May you like

Then he turned toward the door.

"And I want to hear what a man says when he believes he still has something to negotiate.""
