Chapter 8: The Meeting That Destroyed the Bennett Family's Plan

Richard Bennett entered my grandfather's study at 6:12 p.m.

He was wearing a navy suit and carrying a leather briefcase.

He looked composed.

Almost too composed.

His eyes briefly moved toward Sophia.

Then he looked at Arthur.

"Arthur. I apologize for arriving without an appointment.""

Arthur gestured toward the chair.

"Sit down, Richard.""

Richard didn't sit immediately.

Instead, he looked at me.

"Chloe, I hope you're feeling better.""

I stared at him.

"Why?""

He frowned.

"Why what?""

"Why are you asking how I'm feeling? Is it because you care, or because you need something?""

His expression tightened.

Arthur spoke calmly.

"Let's dispense with the pleasantries.""

Richard finally sat.

"Very well.""

Jonathan placed a folder on the desk.

"We have received information concerning an alleged authorization bearing Mrs. Bennett's signature. We also have correspondence indicating that her identity documents may have been used without her consent.""

Richard opened his briefcase.

"I understand there's been some confusion.""

I almost laughed.

"Confusion seems to be the favorite word in your family.""

He ignored me.

"Victoria was handling administrative matters. She may have made a mistake.""

Jonathan looked at him.

"Are you acknowledging that the signature was not authorized?""

Richard hesitated.

"I haven't examined every document.""

"Then perhaps you should examine this one.""

Jonathan slid the page toward him.

Richard glanced down.

His face changed.

Only slightly.

But I noticed.

He recognized it.

Arthur leaned forward.

"Did you know this document existed?""

Richard closed the folder.

"I knew there was a preliminary authorization.""

"Did you know Chloe had not signed it?""

Richard looked toward me.

"She was expected to sign.""

"That's not what I asked.""

He sighed.

"Daniel said she would cooperate.""

I felt a bitter laugh rise in my throat.

"Daniel said?""

Richard nodded.

"He told us you understood the importance of the transaction.""

I stared at him.

"Did you ever ask me?""

Richard's expression hardened.

"Chloe, you don't understand the pressure the company is under.""

I leaned forward.

"Then explain it.""

He opened his briefcase and removed several financial statements.

"Bennett Development has substantial obligations. We have employees, contractors, investors, and several projects approaching completion. If we lose the financing, the consequences could be severe.""

I looked at the figures.

He was right about one thing.

The company was in trouble.

But that didn't excuse what they had done.

"Why didn't you approach me honestly?""

Richard rubbed his chin.

"Because we knew you might refuse.""

I stared at him.

"Exactly.""

He shifted in his chair.

"Chloe, this is business. People sometimes have to make difficult decisions.""

"Using a woman's signature without her permission is not a difficult business decision. It's a serious allegation.""

His face reddened.

Arthur raised one hand.

"Richard, I suggest you choose your next words carefully.""

Richard looked at him.

"I came here because I wanted to resolve this privately.""

Arthur nodded.

"Then answer the questions.""

Richard looked at the documents.

"Victoria prepared the paperwork. Daniel was supposed to obtain Chloe's approval. I believed he had done so.""

I shook my head.

"You believed what you wanted to believe.""

Richard's expression turned cold.

"Be careful, Chloe. You're not the only person who could be hurt by this situation.""

The room went silent.

Jonathan immediately looked up.

"Are you threatening Mrs. Bennett?""

Richard blinked.

"No. I'm explaining the consequences.""

Arthur stood.

"Then let me explain something to you.""

He walked slowly toward the desk.

"Chloe is my granddaughter. Lily is my great-granddaughter. You may have mistaken their kindness for weakness, but I assure you, you have made a serious error in judgment.""

Richard looked irritated.

"Arthur, let's not turn this into a personal conflict.""

"It became personal when your family struck a child.""

Richard's face changed.

I watched him carefully.

He didn't look ashamed.

He looked annoyed that the incident had complicated his plans.

Then he turned toward me.

"Chloe, Victoria shouldn't have done what she did. I'll make sure she apologizes.""

I stared at him.

"An apology?""

"Yes.""

"Will she apologize to Lily?""

"Of course.""

"Will she admit what she did?""

Richard hesitated.

"She'll say whatever is necessary.""

I shook my head.

"No.""

He frowned.

"What do you mean?""

"I don't want a performance. I want accountability.""

Richard closed his briefcase.

"You're making this unnecessarily difficult.""

I looked at him.

"Your family has spent years making things easy for itself by expecting me to stay quiet.""

Arthur nodded toward Jonathan.

"Please show him the next document.""

Jonathan removed a formal notice.

It stated that Whitmore Holdings was suspending all discussions concerning the proposed acquisition pending a review of the transaction and the disputed authorization.

Richard read it.

His face turned pale.

"You're suspending the deal?""

"Yes," Arthur replied.

"You can't do that. We have deadlines.""

"We also have legal obligations.""

Richard stood abruptly.

"Do you understand what this will do to our company?""

Arthur's voice remained even.

"Your company's financial decisions are not my responsibility.""

Richard turned toward me.

"Chloe, tell him to reconsider.""

I stared at him.

"Why would I?""

"Because Daniel is your husband!""

"Was that what you remembered when your family used my name?""

Richard's jaw tightened.

"You're going to destroy your marriage over a business misunderstanding?""

I slowly stood.

"No, Richard. Your family destroyed my trust. The business documents simply showed me how far the betrayal went.""

He looked at me for several seconds.

Then he picked up his briefcase.

"This isn't over.""

Arthur nodded.

"You're right. It isn't.""

Richard walked toward the door.

Before leaving, he turned back.

"And Chloe? You should know that Daniel has already spoken to a divorce attorney.""

I felt my heart sink.

Not because I wanted him back.

But because the announcement confirmed how quickly he was willing to turn against me when he couldn't control the situation.

Richard left.

The door closed.

Sophia began crying quietly.

Arthur sat down.

Jonathan gathered the papers.

I remained standing.

Then I looked at my grandfather.

"Is the company really in that much trouble?""

Arthur nodded.

"Based on the information we've reviewed, yes.""

"How bad?""

"Bad enough that they were willing to take risks they should never have taken.""

I looked at the suspended acquisition notice.

"Are you going to let them lose everything?""

Arthur studied me.

"That's not a decision we need to make tonight.""

I shook my head.

"I don't want innocent employees to suffer because of Richard, Victoria, and Daniel.""

My grandfather gave a small nod.

"That is a reasonable concern.""

Jonathan spoke.

"We can separate any legitimate commercial discussions from the disputed guarantee. But there can be no financial arrangement involving your assets without your explicit consent.""

I agreed.

"That's what I want.""

The following morning, Daniel's attorney sent a formal letter.

He requested temporary arrangements concerning Lily, our shared residence, and certain marital assets.

I read it twice.

The letter suggested that I had acted impulsively during the dinner and removed Lily from the family home without reasonable justification.

I placed it on the desk.

"He's trying to make me look unstable.""

Jonathan nodded.

"That is one possible interpretation. We should respond with the documented facts.""

Evelyn entered carrying another file.

"We also have the original email from Victoria. There's a message chain between her and Richard.""

Jonathan opened it.

The first email discussed the financing proposal.

The second discussed my passport.

The third contained a sentence that made my stomach turn.

Once Chloe is emotionally pressured by Daniel, she'll sign. She doesn't like conflict, especially when it concerns family.

I closed my eyes.

They had studied my personality.

They had counted on my kindness.

And they had used the very thing I believed made me a good wife against me.

Then Evelyn opened another message.

"This one is more recent.""

The sender was Daniel.

The recipient was Victoria.

The date was the evening before the dinner.

I read the message.

Don't push Chloe too hard. Get her to agree after the dinner. If she refuses, remind her that the company is helping support our lifestyle.

I stared at the screen.

Arthur's expression hardened.

"Support your lifestyle?""

I looked at the email again.

Then another message appeared below it.

Victoria's response.

Leave it to me. She'll understand where she belongs once everyone reminds her.

I felt something inside me go completely still.

The slap hadn't been an isolated moment of cruelty.

It had been part of a family dynamic in which they believed they could pressure me into giving them what they wanted.

And Daniel had known enough to let it happen.

That afternoon, I received a message from a number I didn't recognize.

It contained a photograph.

Daniel stood outside the Bennett estate with Victoria.

She was holding his arm.

Below the photograph was a short message.

*Your husband is already telling people that you're mentally unstable. He says he's preparing to take Lily away from you.*

I stared at the screen.

Then another message appeared.

*You should know why he's doing it.*

I called the number.

A woman answered.

"Hello?""

"Who is this?""

"My name is Rachel. I work in the Bennett Development finance office.""

My grip tightened.

"What do you want?""

"I've been trying to decide whether to contact you for days.""

"Why?""

"Because I saw something in the company records.""

"What?""

Rachel lowered her voice.

"Daniel transferred money from a joint account shortly before the dinner.""

My heart began beating faster.

"How much?""

"Two hundred and fifty thousand dollars.""

I closed my eyes.

"Where did it go?""

"I don't know. But the transfer was approved using an authorization connected to your name.""

I stood abruptly.

"That's impossible.""

"I know.""

Rachel hesitated.

"There's something else. The account wasn't just a household account.""

I looked at Arthur.

He immediately signaled Jonathan to listen.

Rachel continued.

"It was linked to the initial deposit for a property purchase.""

"What property?""

She gave me an address.

May you like

Then she said something that made me feel as though the floor had disappeared beneath me.

"Mrs. Bennett, I think your husband has been preparing to leave you for months.""
