Chapter 4: The Family Daniel Never Knew Existed

The ride to my grandfather's estate took forty minutes.

Lily fell asleep before we reached the highway.

She was curled against my side, wrapped in the cream blanket Marcus had brought her. Every few minutes, she stirred and made a small sound in her sleep. Each time, I instinctively tightened my arms around her.

I couldn't stop looking at the faint red mark on her cheek.

Marcus sat in the front passenger seat, speaking quietly into his phone.

"Yes, sir. Mrs. Bennett and the child are safe. We're approximately fifteen minutes away.""

A pause.

"Understood. I'll inform the household.""

He ended the call and turned slightly.

"Your grandfather is waiting in the main residence, ma'am.""

I nodded.

"Thank you, Marcus.""

He hesitated.

"May I ask whether you want the family doctor to examine Lily when we arrive?""

"Yes. But please ask him to be gentle. She's frightened.""

"Of course.""

I looked out the window.

The city lights passed in long golden streaks.

For five years, I had deliberately kept my grandfather's world separate from my marriage. I wanted Daniel to love me without knowing my family's wealth, influence, or history.

My grandfather had disagreed.

He had warned me that some people behaved differently when they discovered what a person could offer them.

I had told him Daniel wasn't like that.

I had been wrong.

The SUV turned through enormous iron gates.

Beyond them stood a sprawling estate surrounded by mature oak trees, carefully maintained gardens, and a long stone driveway.

Warm lights illuminated the entrance.

A woman in her sixties stood waiting beneath the portico.

"Mrs. Bennett!""

It was Margaret, my grandfather's longtime housekeeper.

She hurried toward the vehicle as Marcus opened the door.

"Oh, sweetheart. Look at your little girl.""

I stepped out carefully with Lily in my arms.

Margaret's expression changed when she saw the mark on her cheek.

"Who did this?""

I swallowed.

"We'll talk inside.""

Margaret touched Lily's hair.

"Poor little angel.""

The front doors opened.

My grandfather stood in the entrance hall.

Arthur Whitmore was eighty-one, but he still carried himself like a man accustomed to making decisions that affected entire industries.

His silver hair was neatly combed. He wore a charcoal suit and held a wooden walking stick he rarely needed.

The moment he saw us, his expression softened.

"Chloe.""

I walked toward him.

"Grandpa.""

He looked at Lily.

Then he saw her cheek.

His hand tightened around the walking stick.

"What happened?""

I couldn't answer immediately.

He stepped closer and gently touched Lily's uninjured cheek.

"Hello, sweetheart. Grandpa Arthur is here.""

Lily opened her eyes.

"Grandpa?""

"Yes, little one.""

She looked around sleepily.

"Can Mommy stay here tonight?""

Arthur's expression broke.

He looked at me.

"Of course she can. Both of you are staying.""

I nodded.

"Thank you.""

He turned toward Margaret.

"Have Dr. Collins come immediately. And prepare the blue bedroom for Lily.""

"Already arranged, sir.""

Arthur looked at Marcus.

"Report.""

Marcus straightened.

"Mrs. Bennett was involved in an altercation at the Bennett estate. The incident concerned the child.

Multiple guests witnessed the event. Mr. Daniel Bennett was present.""

Arthur's eyes narrowed.

"Was he involved?""

Marcus paused.

"He did not physically intervene.""

My grandfather closed his eyes for a moment.

Then he looked at me.

"Did he protect her?""

I shook my head.

"No.""

Arthur slowly turned toward the windows.

For several seconds, he said nothing.

Then he spoke.

"Five years ago, I asked you one thing, Chloe. I asked you never to confuse patience with allowing someone to destroy your dignity.""

"I remember.""

"And what did you tell me?""

I lowered my eyes.

"That Daniel was different.""

Arthur gave a sad smile.

"People are often different when they want something.""

I felt tears gathering.

"I wanted my marriage to work.""

He took my hand.

"I know, darling.""

His voice softened.

"But your daughter should never have to pay the price for your hope.""

That was when I finally cried.

Not loudly.

Not dramatically.

Just enough for my grandfather to pull me into his arms.

"You're home now," he whispered.

An hour later, Lily was asleep in the blue bedroom.

Dr. Collins had examined her and confirmed that there was no serious physical injury. He recommended monitoring the redness and making sure she felt safe.

I sat beside her bed until her breathing became steady.

Then I returned downstairs.

Arthur was waiting in his study.

The room smelled of old leather and cedarwood. Shelves covered the walls, filled with books, framed photographs, and awards from decades of business.

A folder sat on his desk.

He gestured toward the chair opposite him.

"Sit down.""

I did.

He opened the folder.

Inside were documents bearing the name Whitmore Global Holdings.

I knew exactly what they were.

My grandfather's business empire.

The company had begun with a single logistics warehouse established by my great-grandfather. Over the decades, it had expanded into commercial property, transportation, hospitality, private investment, and international infrastructure.

Arthur had spent his life building it.

And I was his only surviving grandchild.

"Chloe," he said, "I need to ask you something.""

"Go ahead.""

"Does Daniel know about your ownership interests?""

"No.""

"Does he know about the family trust?""

"No.""

"Does he know that the property his company has been trying to acquire for the past eighteen months belongs to Whitmore Holdings?""

I looked up.

"What?""

Arthur turned a document toward me.

There was a familiar company logo at the top.

Bennett Development Group.

Below it was a proposal concerning a major commercial redevelopment project.

I recognized the location immediately.

It was a large waterfront property near the city center.

Daniel had mentioned the project several times. He had complained that negotiations were taking too long and that the owners were being unreasonable.

"You're telling me you own that property?""

Arthur nodded.

"Through one of our subsidiaries.""

I looked at the financial summary.

The proposed acquisition was worth several hundred million dollars.

"Why didn't you tell me?""

"I thought you knew the general structure of our holdings.""

"I knew about the company. I didn't know Daniel's business was negotiating with us.""

Arthur leaned back.

"Your husband has never met the people behind the ownership structure. His executives have been dealing with our corporate office.""

I turned another page.

Then I noticed a familiar name.

"Richard Bennett.""

Arthur nodded.

"Daniel's father.""

I stared at the document.

"What is he doing here?""

"He is listed as a senior representative of Bennett Development Group. He has personally attended two negotiation meetings.""

I felt a cold sensation move through my stomach.

Arthur watched me carefully.

"There's something else.""

He opened another folder.

This one contained correspondence, financial summaries, and several printed emails.

"Three weeks ago, our legal department received a request to accelerate the acquisition process. The request came from Richard Bennett.""

"Why?""

"His company is under considerable financial pressure.""

I frowned.

"Daniel told me they were expanding.""

"They are attempting to expand. That's not the same thing as being financially healthy.""

Arthur tapped the documents.

"Several of their development projects are carrying substantial debt. They need this acquisition to secure additional financing.""

I slowly lowered the papers.

"Does Daniel know?""

"That is something we need to establish.""

I looked at the folder again.

Then I noticed another document.

It was a preliminary financial assessment.

The proposed deal involved more than the waterfront property.

There was a section concerning guarantees and third-party security.

My name appeared on one page.

Chloe Whitmore Bennett.

I stared at it.

"What is this?""

Arthur leaned forward.

"That is precisely why I wanted to speak with you.""

I read the paragraph twice.

The document appeared to contain a proposal involving my personal assets as a potential source of collateral.

But I had never authorized anything.

"Grandpa, I didn't sign this.""

"I know.""

"Then why is my name here?""

Arthur's expression hardened.

"That's what our legal team is investigating.""

He closed the folder.

"Chloe, I don't want you making decisions out of anger. But I also won't allow anyone to use your name, your trust, or your daughter to protect their failing business.""

I looked toward the ceiling.

Somewhere upstairs, Lily was sleeping.

I thought about Daniel sitting at that dinner table.

About how quickly he had defended his sister.

About how he had asked me to stop embarrassing him.

And about the years I had spent believing I could build a marriage on trust alone.

My phone vibrated.

Daniel.

I stared at the screen.

Arthur noticed.

"Are you going to answer?""

I shook my head.

"Not tonight.""

A second message appeared.

*Daniel: Chloe, we need to talk. You're overreacting. Come home tomorrow and we'll settle this privately.*

Then another.

*Daniel: My mother is very upset. Victoria is talking about pressing charges. Please stop making this bigger than it needs to be.*

I felt my jaw tighten.

He still hadn't asked how Lily was doing.

I placed the phone facedown.

Arthur stood and walked toward the window.

"Tomorrow morning, we will find out exactly what your husband's family has been doing.""

He turned back.

"And Chloe?""

"Yes?""

His expression was serious.

"Don't sign anything. Don't agree to anything. And don't let Daniel persuade you that protecting your daughter is an act of betrayal.""

I nodded.

Then my phone vibrated again.

This time, the message wasn't from Daniel.

It was from an unknown number.

May you like

**Mrs. Bennett, my name is Laura Hayes. I was at the dinner tonight.

I saw what happened to Lily. There's something you need to know about Victoria. I have a recording.**
