Chapter 9: The Money He Moved Before the Slap

I didn't sleep that night.

At 2:00 a.m., I sat in the guest bedroom with my laptop open and the curtains drawn.

Lily was asleep beside me.

Her small hand rested on my wrist.

I kept thinking about the two hundred and fifty thousand dollars.

It wasn't simply the amount.

It was the timing.

Daniel had transferred the money before the dinner.

Before Victoria slapped Lily.

Before I left the Bennett estate.

Before anyone knew that my grandfather would become involved.

He hadn't reacted to my departure.

He had anticipated it.

At 7:30 the following morning, Jonathan arrived with Evelyn.

Rachel had agreed to provide additional information through the proper channels.

My grandfather joined us shortly afterward.

I showed them the address Rachel had given me.

It belonged to a luxury apartment building on the other side of the city.

"Can we establish who owns the property?"" I asked.

Evelyn checked her notes.

"The apartment was purchased four months ago through a private company.""

"Whose company?""

She turned her laptop.

"Registered ownership is held by a corporate entity. We're still confirming the beneficial owner.""

Jonathan examined the transaction summary Rachel had supplied.

"The transfer appears to have originated from a joint account associated with the Bennett household.""

I stared at the figures.

"Daniel and I opened that account after Lily was born.""

"Do you remember authorizing this particular transfer?""

"No.""

"Did you receive a notification?""

I shook my head.

"I stopped using that account regularly after Daniel said he would handle the household finances.""

Arthur's expression tightened.

"Why did you allow him to manage it?""

I looked at my grandfather.

"Because I trusted him.""

He didn't criticize me.

Instead, he placed a hand over mine.

"Trust is not a crime, Chloe.""

Jonathan continued.

"We need the bank's records before drawing conclusions. There may be explanations for the transfer, but given the other documents, we should investigate it carefully.""

I nodded.

"Do it.""

At 10:15, Daniel called from an unfamiliar number.

I answered.

"Hello?""

"Chloe, finally.""

His voice sounded irritated.

"Why have you blocked me?""

"Because I don't want to speak to you.""

"That's ridiculous. We have a daughter.""

I looked at Lily, who was drawing at the little table near the window.

"Then you should be thinking about her.""

"I am thinking about her. That's why I need to see her.""

"Have you asked how she's doing?""

"Yes.""

"When?""

He went quiet.

Then he said, "Chloe, I don't want to argue.""

"Then don't.""

He exhaled.

"I've spoken with my attorney. We need to arrange access.""

"Everything concerning Lily will be handled through the appropriate legal channels.""

"You're making this unnecessarily complicated.""

I almost smiled.

"Daniel, you used my name without permission. You allowed your sister to strike our daughter. You hid financial information from me. I think complicated is already where we are.""

His voice hardened.

"You're letting your grandfather influence you.""

"No. I'm finally looking at the facts.""

"Your grandfather wants to control everything.""

I looked at Arthur, who was reading a newspaper.

"He isn't the one who moved money from our account.""

Silence.

Then Daniel spoke.

"What money?""

I closed my eyes.

There it was.

The first crack.

"The two hundred and fifty thousand dollars.""

His breathing changed.

"Who told you about that?""

I didn't answer.

"Chloe, listen to me. That money was moved for a business purpose.""

"Which business?""

"It's complicated.""

"Then explain it.""

"I don't have time for this.""

I laughed quietly.

"You always have time when you need something from me.""

He raised his voice.

"That money was going to be replaced!""

"By whom?""

He hung up.

I stared at the phone.

Arthur lowered his newspaper.

"Interesting.""

Jonathan wrote something down.

"His response doesn't establish wrongdoing, but it reinforces the need to obtain the bank records.""

I nodded.

"There's something else.""

I turned my laptop toward them.

"The apartment Rachel mentioned. I want to know who it's for.""

By noon, Evelyn had an update.

She entered the study holding several printed records.

"The apartment is registered under a company called Vantage Living Properties.""

Arthur frowned.

"Who owns it?""

Evelyn placed a page on the desk.

"The corporate records list a director named Victoria Bennett.""

I stared at her.

"Victoria?""

"Yes.""

Jonathan examined the documents.

"The company was incorporated five months ago.""

I leaned closer.

"Who paid for the apartment?""

Evelyn turned another page.

"We have a preliminary record of the deposit transfer. The funds appear to have originated from the account Rachel identified.""

I felt sick.

"Daniel used our money to buy his sister an apartment?""

"That is one possibility. We need the bank's full transaction trail to establish the exact source and purpose.""

I shook my head.

"Why would he do that?""

Arthur looked at me.

"That is the question.""

Then Sophia entered.

She had been staying at the estate since the previous evening.

"Chloe?""

I looked up.

"Yes?""

She was holding her phone.

"I think I know why.""

She placed it on the desk.

A photograph showed Victoria standing outside a luxury apartment with a set of keys.

The caption read:

New beginnings. Finally, something to call my own.

The photograph was dated four months earlier.

Sophia scrolled down.

"She posted this on a private account. She told everyone it was a gift from a friend.""

I looked at the photograph.

"Did she say who the friend was?""

Sophia shook her head.

"She said it was a business arrangement.""

Then Sophia opened another image.

It showed Daniel and Victoria standing together in the apartment's living room.

Daniel was holding a bottle of champagne.

Victoria had her arm around him.

The date was the same week as the transfer.

My chest tightened.

"Why would she need an apartment?""

Sophia looked at me.

"Because she was planning to move out of the Bennett estate.""

"Why?""

Sophia hesitated.

Then she spoke.

"Because Dad told her that once the financing was completed, she would be given a position in the new development company. She wanted her own place near the office.""

I stared at the photograph.

So that was where the money had gone.

But there was still something missing.

I looked at Evelyn.

"Who was the second signatory on the transfer?""

She checked the records.

Then she stopped.

"Daniel.""

I felt a strange emptiness.

The account required two approvals for transfers above a certain amount.

Daniel had approved it.

And the second approval appeared to have been processed using an electronic authorization connected to my account.

I had never approved it.

Jonathan looked at me.

"We need to contact the bank immediately and preserve the records.""

I nodded.

"Do it.""

At 3:00 p.m., a delivery arrived.

It was a thick envelope from Daniel's attorney.

Jonathan opened it carefully.

Inside was a proposed separation agreement.

I read the first page.

Then the second.

Then I reached the section concerning marital assets.

My name appeared beside a statement indicating that I had voluntarily agreed to waive claims concerning several financial transactions.

I looked at Jonathan.

"What is this?""

He examined the page.

"This is a draft proposal. It has no binding effect unless properly executed.""

I turned another page.

There was a clause concerning Lily.

Daniel was requesting that she spend most of her time at the Bennett estate while I attended to what his attorney described as my "family and business obligations.""

I felt my hands begin to shake.

"He wants custody?""

Jonathan spoke carefully.

"He is proposing a parenting arrangement that gives him substantial time with Lily. That doesn't mean it will be accepted.""

I stared at the document.

After everything that had happened, he wanted me to hand over our daughter.

I stood and walked toward the window.

For the first time since leaving the Bennett estate, I felt genuine fear.

Not for myself.

For Lily.

Arthur came to stand beside me.

"Look at me, Chloe.""

I turned.

He held my shoulders gently.

"No one gets to decide Lily's future by sending a threatening letter.""

I swallowed.

"What if he tries to take her?""

"Then we respond through the courts, with evidence and proper legal representation.""

I nodded.

Arthur continued.

"You are not alone.""

I looked back at the document.

Then I noticed something strange.

The proposed separation agreement included a list of assets Daniel claimed were subject to division.

One item was described as:

*Whitmore Family Residential Trust – Beneficial Interest.*

I stared.

"Grandpa?""

Arthur took the document.

His expression changed immediately.

"That's impossible.""

Jonathan stepped closer.

"What is it?""

Arthur pointed to the clause.

"The trust was established before Chloe married Daniel. It is separate property. Daniel has no beneficial interest in it.""

I looked at him.

"Then why is it included?""

Jonathan examined the wording.

"This appears to be an attempt to characterize Mrs. Bennett's trust interests as marital assets. We need to determine what information was used to support that claim.""

Arthur's voice became cold.

"They're not just asking for money anymore.""

He looked at me.

"They're trying to gain access to the family trust.""

I felt my stomach turn.

Then my phone rang.

It was Rachel again.

I answered immediately.

"Hello?""

"Mrs. Bennett, I found something else.""

"What?""

"I was reviewing the old financing files. Daniel didn't just transfer money to Victoria's company.""

I gripped the phone.

"What else did he do?""

"He created a separate account using a company connected to the apartment purchase.""

"Why?""

Rachel hesitated.

"Because he was planning to transfer more money after the waterfront deal closed.""

"How much?""

"Nearly two million dollars.""

I looked at Arthur.

He had heard every word.

Rachel continued.

"And there's a note attached to the transaction.""

"What note?""

Her voice dropped.

"It says the payment was to be made after the Whitmore guarantee was secured.""

I closed my eyes.

Then she added:

"Mrs. Bennett, there's a name listed as the ultimate beneficiary.""

"Whose name?""

Rachel took a breath.

"Daniel's.""

I slowly lowered the phone.

He hadn't been trying to save the family business.

He had been preparing an exit.

He had planned to use my name to secure the financing, transfer money through Victoria's company, and leave me with the consequences.

And the final detail was worse.

A few minutes later, Jonathan received the complete transaction summary.

He read it silently.

Then he looked at me.

"Chloe, there's a scheduled transfer.""

"When?""

"Tomorrow morning.""

"Can it be stopped?""

"We're contacting the bank and relevant parties now. The transfer may be subject to immediate review.""

I stared at the screen.

Two million dollars.

My name.

My daughter.

My marriage.

Everything had been turned into a financial calculation.

Then Jonathan opened the final page.

There was a note written by Daniel.

It contained only one sentence.

*Once Chloe signs, she won't have the money or the leverage to leave.*

I felt the room go silent.

Arthur slowly closed the folder.

May you like

Then he said something I would never forget.

"Tomorrow, Daniel Bennett is going to discover that the woman he thought he could control is the one person he should never have underestimated.""
