Chapter 2: The Mother He Hit
Marcus came running.
I heard his shoes strike the polished floor before I saw him.
“Vanessa!””
He appeared in the doorway wearing his black tuxedo, his bow tie slightly crooked, his face drained of color.
Behind him, two guests turned to look.
I grabbed my torn sleeve.
“Marcus!””
He looked at me.
Then at Evelyn.
Then at the shredded lace hanging from my arm.
His expression hardened.
“What happened?””
I pointed at his mother.
“She attacked me.””
Evelyn shook her head.
“No.””
“She grabbed me,” I cried.
“No, I didn't!””
“She tore my dress!””
“I never touched you!””
Marcus stepped into the room.
“Mom.””
Evelyn's eyes widened.
“Marcus, listen to me.””
“Did you touch Vanessa?””
“No.””
“Did you grab her?””
“No.””
I let out a broken sob.
Marcus looked back at me.
“You're bleeding?””
I glanced at my arm.
There was no blood.
There wasn't even a scratch.
But I knew what he was asking.
“No,” I whispered.
“She didn't hurt me badly.””
Evelyn stared at me.
Her mouth opened.
Then closed.
She understood.
I was building the story in front of him.
Piece by piece.
“You're lying,” Evelyn said.
I looked at her with wide eyes.
“I don't understand why you hate me this much.””
Marcus turned toward his mother.
“Mom.””
“I am telling you the truth.””
“You're not.””
“Marcus, please.””
“I watched her walk away from you.””
“I didn't touch her!””
“She was screaming.””
“Because she tore her own sleeve!””
I gasped.
“That is insane.””
Evelyn pointed toward my dress.
“Look at the fabric. The tear starts from the inside.””
Marcus stared at the sleeve.
For half a second, uncertainty crossed his face.
I saw it.
And I panicked.
So I cried.
Not loudly.
Just enough.
“Maybe this was a mistake.””
Marcus immediately looked at me.
“What?””
“Maybe marrying into your family was a mistake.””
“No.””
“I don't want to come between you and your mother.””
“You're not.””
“She clearly doesn't want me here.””
Evelyn stepped forward.
“Marcus, don't let her manipulate you.””
That was the sentence I needed.
Marcus turned.
“Don't talk about her like that.””
“I'm trying to protect you.””
“From my wife?””
“From someone who is isolating you.””
I shook my head.
“Marcus…”
He looked at me.
I let one tear slide down my cheek.
That was enough.
His jaw tightened.
“Mom, apologize.””
Evelyn stared at him.
“What?””
“Apologize to Vanessa.””
“For something I didn't do?””
“Please.””
“I can't apologize for something I didn't do.””
I whispered, “It's okay.””
Marcus looked at me.
“It isn't okay.””
Then everything happened at once.
Evelyn took a step toward him.
Marcus stepped forward.
“Mom, I said apologize.””
“Marcus, listen to me.””
“I've been listening!””
“No, you haven't.””
She reached toward him.
Not aggressively.
Almost desperately.
Her fingers barely moved past his shoulder.
Marcus reacted.
His hand came up.
The slap cracked through the room.
Evelyn stumbled sideways.
Her shoulder struck the armchair.
She caught herself with one hand.
The ballroom music seemed to disappear.
Even the champagne glasses outside went silent.
Evelyn slowly raised her hand to her cheek.
Her eyes were enormous.
“Marcus…”
He stood frozen.
I covered my mouth.
“Oh my God.””
Evelyn looked at her son.
“I never touched her.””
Her voice was barely audible.
“I never touched her.””
Marcus's chest rose and fell.
Then a woman's voice cut through the doorway.
“Stop!””
Diane Carter, the venue manager, hurried into the room.
She wore a navy suit and carried a security tablet against her chest.
Her face was furious.
“Stop right now.””
Marcus looked at her.
Diane moved between him and Evelyn.
“I saw the camera feed.””
My heart stopped.
Not metaphorically.
Actually stopped.
For one horrible second, I couldn't breathe.
Diane turned the tablet toward Marcus.
“The lounge camera has been recording the entire time.””
I felt cold.
Marcus stared at the screen.
Evelyn lowered her hand from her cheek.
Diane tapped the display.
“I was at the security desk when I heard Vanessa scream.””
She looked directly at me.
“I pulled up the camera.””
My mouth went dry.
Marcus looked from Diane to me.
“What did you see?””
Diane didn't answer immediately.
She pressed a button.
The footage began playing.
There I was.
Dragging Evelyn into the lounge.
Then releasing her.
Then stepping toward her.
Then—
Diane paused the video.
My torn sleeve filled the screen.
Marcus's face changed.
Diane continued.
The footage showed Evelyn standing several feet away.
Both hands empty.
My hands gripping my own lace sleeve.
Then the fabric tore.
Marcus stopped breathing.
Diane looked at him.
“Watch.””
She pressed play.
On the screen, I screamed.
“Marcus! Your mother attacked me!””
Evelyn stood motionless behind me.
Marcus slowly turned his head toward me.
I could see the exact moment the story I'd built began collapsing.
“No,” I whispered.
Diane drew the tablet closer to herself.
“There's more.””
Marcus looked at her.
“What?””
Diane's finger hovered over the screen.
“There was something Vanessa did before she tore the dress.””
Evelyn stared at the tablet.
Marcus looked at me.
“What did she do?””
Diane pressed play again.
May you like
And this time, the footage showed the moment I thought nobody had seen.
The moment I looked directly at the security camera.
