Chapter 3: The Camera Never Lied

Marcus didn't blink.

The screen showed me standing beside Evelyn.

I had just released her wrist.

Evelyn was still taking a step backward.

Then I looked up.

Directly at the camera.

Diane paused the footage.

Nobody spoke.

The silence was worse than shouting.

I could hear the ballroom beyond the lounge again—the scrape of chairs, the nervous whispers, the distant clatter of silverware.

Marcus stared at the frozen image of my face.

“What is that?”” he asked.

Diane answered quietly.

“You looking at the camera.””

I swallowed.

“I was scared.””

Diane looked at me.

“You looked directly at it before you tore your sleeve.””

“I didn't.””

“You did.””

“You must have the wrong angle.””

“There are three cameras covering this area.””

My stomach dropped.

Three.

I had only noticed one.

Diane tapped the screen.

“This one covers the lounge entrance.””

Another tap.

“This one covers the security desk.””

Another.

“And this one covers the seating area.””

She looked at Marcus.

“All three show the same thing.””

Evelyn sat slowly in the armchair.

Her fingers trembled against her lavender dress.

Marcus looked at her.

Her cheek was already turning red.

His expression broke.

“Mom…”

She didn't answer.

He took one step toward her.

She flinched.

He stopped.

That flinch destroyed him.

I saw it happen.

His shoulders dropped.

His mouth opened slightly.

He looked like a little boy who had suddenly realized he'd done something terrible.

I stepped toward him.

“Marcus.””

He didn't look at me.

“Don't.””

I stopped.

Diane folded her arms.

“Marcus, I can call security and have the footage preserved.””

I immediately turned toward her.

“No.””

Everyone looked at me.

I forced myself to breathe.

“I mean… there's no need.””

Diane's eyes narrowed.

“No need?””

“This is a family matter.””

“You accused a guest of assault.””

“I was upset.””

“You said she attacked you.””

“I thought she was going to.””

Diane stared at me.

“You thought she was going to?””

I nodded.

“Yes.””

Evelyn finally looked up.

“You knew I never touched you.””

I said nothing.

Her voice shook.

“You knew.””

Marcus turned toward me.

“Vanessa.””

I looked at him.

“Tell me you didn't do this.””

The room seemed to shrink.

“What?””

“Tell me you didn't tear your own dress.””

I felt the air leave my lungs.

I had spent months preparing for this wedding.

Months choosing flowers, tasting cakes, selecting invitations, rehearsing my vows.

I had built an entire future around Marcus.

I wasn't going to lose him because of one stupid piece of lace.

So I cried.

“I'm sorry.””

Marcus's face tightened.

“That isn't an answer.””

“I was afraid.””

“Afraid of what?””

“Your mother.””

Evelyn closed her eyes.

Diane shook her head.

“Vanessa.””

I looked at her.

“You can't keep changing the story.””

“I didn't change anything.””

“You just said you were afraid she would attack you.””

“Yes.””

“But the camera shows you pulling her into this room.””

“She said something horrible to me.””

“What did she say?””

I looked at Marcus.

He was waiting.

Evelyn was waiting.

Diane was waiting.

I couldn't tell them the truth.

Not yet.

So I said the first thing that came to mind.

“She told me Marcus regretted marrying me.””

Marcus's eyes narrowed.

“Did she?””

Evelyn shook her head.

“No.””

“She said you were a mistake,” I whispered.

“I never said that.””

“She said you should have married someone else.””

Evelyn's eyes filled with tears.

“Marcus, I swear to you—”

“Mom.””

She stopped.

He looked devastated.

“I don't know what to believe.””

Evelyn slowly stood.

“I know.””

She wiped her cheek.

“You don't have to believe me.””

Marcus looked down.

“I hit you.””

“Yes.””

“I thought…”

“I know what you thought.””

“I was wrong.””

“I know.””

His voice cracked.

“I'm sorry.””

Evelyn looked at him for a long moment.

Then she shook her head.

“Not here.””

“Mom—”

“Not at your wedding.””

She turned toward the door.

Marcus followed her with his eyes.

“Where are you going?””

“Home.””

“But the reception—”

She gave him a sad smile.

“I don't belong here anymore.””

He took a step after her.

I grabbed his arm.

“Marcus, please.””

He looked down at my hand.

Then back at me.

“What?””

“You can't just leave me standing here.””

He gently removed my fingers from his sleeve.

“I need a minute.””

I felt panic rising again.

“Marcus.””

He turned toward his mother.

“Mom…”

Evelyn paused at the doorway.

He swallowed.

“I really am sorry.””

She looked at him.

“I know.””

Then she walked away.

Marcus remained frozen.

Diane watched him.

I could feel the wedding slipping through my fingers.

The guests were whispering now.

Someone had already started recording on a phone.

I turned toward Diane.

“You said the cameras recorded everything.””

“Yes.””

“Then you can prove she wasn't attacked.””

Diane looked at me strangely.

“That isn't what I'm worried about.””

“What do you mean?””

She turned the tablet around again.

There was another clip.

A timestamp from twenty-three minutes earlier.

Diane pressed play.

The footage showed me standing alone near the security desk.

I was holding my phone.

Marcus hadn't arrived yet.

Evelyn wasn't there.

I watched myself look around.

Then I pulled something from my purse.

A small white envelope.

My face changed.

Marcus leaned closer to the screen.

“What is that?””

I didn't answer.

Diane paused the footage.

The envelope was visible in my hand.

And written across the front, in black ink, were four words.

*FOR MARCUS — AFTER THE CEREMONY.*

Marcus slowly looked at me.

“What did you put in that envelope?””

My throat tightened.

“Nothing.””

Diane shook her head.

“I saw you put something inside.””

Marcus stared at me.

“Vanessa…”

I stepped backward.

He stepped toward me.

“What was in the envelope?””

I couldn't answer.

Because the truth was worse than the torn dress.

Much worse.

And before I could say a word, Marcus reached for the tablet.

Diane pulled it away.

“Don't.””

“Why?””

“Because you haven't seen the next clip.””

She tapped the screen.

The video changed.

And this time, it showed Evelyn entering the building earlier that afternoon.

She wasn't alone.

Marcus's face went pale.

Because the man walking beside his mother was someone he had never expected to see at our wedding.

Would you like the next chapter to reveal who entered with Evelyn, or focus first on what Vanessa hid in the envelope?
