Chapter 9: The Woman Behind the Wedding

Nobody moved.

The photograph trembled in my hands.

The woman in the picture was older now, but I recognized her immediately.

Silver hair.

Pearl earrings.

Lavender dress.

Evelyn.

I looked up.

Then at the photograph.

Then back at Evelyn.

“No.””

Evelyn stared at me.

“What?””

I held up the photograph.

“This is you.””

She shook her head.

“That's impossible.””

Camille stepped forward.

“It was taken twenty-nine years ago.””

Marcus looked at his mother.

“You knew Camille?””

Evelyn's face went white.

“I knew someone who looked like me.””

Camille shook her head.

“No.””

She pointed at Evelyn.

“That is you.””

Evelyn backed away.

“I don't remember.””

“You don't have to.””

“What does that mean?””

Camille's voice softened.

“You were there the night Vanessa disappeared.””

Marcus looked at her.

“You said James brought Vanessa to Mom.””

“He did.””

“Then why is Mom in this photograph?””

“Because Evelyn was the person who helped him.””

Evelyn's eyes widened.

“I didn't.””

Camille stepped closer.

“You did.””

“I protected her.””

“You helped James change her identity.””

“I saved her life.””

“You erased her mother.””

“I thought you were dead.””

Camille shook her head.

“You knew I wasn't.””

Evelyn's face crumpled.

“I didn't.””

“You came to the hospital.””

Evelyn froze.

Marcus looked at her.

“What hospital?””

“The night Vanessa was born.””

Evelyn said nothing.

Camille continued.

“You stood outside my room.””

“I was there to see James.””

“You were there to take the baby.””

Evelyn shook her head.

“No.””

“You signed the discharge papers.””

“No.””

“You took her.””

“No!””

The scream echoed through the ballroom.

Everyone went silent.

Evelyn covered her face.

Marcus stared at her.

“Mom.””

She lowered her hands.

“I took Vanessa.””

I felt numb.

“You did?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because James told me you were going to be killed.””

Camille's eyes filled with tears.

“I never asked you to save her.””

“I know.””

“You never gave me the chance.””

“I know.””

“You took my child.””

“I know.””

I stepped toward Evelyn.

“Why didn't you tell me?””

She looked at me.

“Because every year I waited for the right moment.””

“There was never a right moment.””

“I was afraid you'd hate me.””

“I do.””

She flinched.

Marcus looked at me.

“Vanessa…”

I turned toward him.

“And you.””

He stopped.

“You knew nothing.””

“No.””

“You married me without knowing who I was.””

“Yes.””

“You loved me.””

“Yes.””

“But your father knew.””

“Yes.””

“And your mother knew.””

Evelyn whispered, “Not everything.””

I laughed bitterly.

“That's convenient.””

Marcus looked destroyed.

“I never knew.””

“I believe you.””

He stared at me.

“But that doesn't make this okay.””

“I know.””

Camille stepped forward.

“Vanessa, there is something you need to understand.””

I looked at her.

“What?””

“Your father didn't take you because he wanted to hurt me.””

“Then why?””

“He was afraid of what you would become.””

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

“He believed you would inherit something.””

“Money?””

“No.””

“Then what?””

Camille opened the folder.

Inside was a legal document.

She handed it to me.

I scanned the first page.

My eyes stopped on a number.

A trust.

Twenty-seven million dollars.

Marcus stared over my shoulder.

“What is that?””

“My inheritance.””

Camille nodded.

“Your father established it before he died.””

“Why didn't I know?””

“Because the trust was sealed until your thirtieth birthday.””

I stared.

“I turn thirty in four months.””

“Yes.””

Marcus looked at the document.

“Who controls it?””

Camille pointed to the signature.

“Your father appointed three trustees.””

I read the names.

James Carter.

Robert Reed.

And—

I stopped.

The third name was Evelyn Carter.

I looked up.

“No.””

Evelyn nodded.

“He made me a trustee.””

“You knew about the money.””

“Yes.””

“You knew I would inherit it.””

“Yes.””

“That's why you protected me.””

“No.””

Her voice was firm.

“I protected you because I loved you.””

Camille looked away.

“But James also knew that whoever controlled Vanessa's trust could control the company.””

Marcus frowned.

“What company?””

Camille looked at him.

“The Carter Foundation.””

Marcus's face changed.

“My father's foundation?””

“It owns properties, investments, and several businesses.””

“Why would Vanessa inherit it?””

“Because James had no legal heirs except her.””

Marcus looked at me.

“Then what about me?””

“You were never his biological son.””

The room went silent.

Marcus stared at Evelyn.

“What?””

Evelyn couldn't look at him.

Camille whispered, “James raised you.””

Marcus's voice broke.

“But I'm not his son?””

“No.””

He staggered backward.

Evelyn stepped toward him.

“Marcus—”

He recoiled.

“Don't.””

She stopped.

He looked at me.

“So we're not related.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

His eyes filled with tears.

“But I thought…”

Camille stepped forward.

“You and Vanessa were never siblings.””

Marcus looked at her.

“Then why did my father marry my mother?””

Camille answered quietly.

“Because Evelyn was part of the plan.””

Evelyn shook her head.

“No.””

“Yes.””

“I didn't know.””

“You knew enough.””

Marcus turned toward his mother.

“What plan?””

Evelyn said nothing.

Camille looked at me.

“Your father needed a respectable family.””

“For what?””

“To hide where the money came from.””

Robert suddenly spoke.

“That's not the whole story.””

Everyone turned.

He was standing near the security desk, pale and exhausted.

He held the old black notebook.

“James wasn't the mastermind.””

Camille looked at him.

“No.””

Robert opened the notebook.

“He was working for someone.””

Marcus stared.

“Who?””

Robert looked directly at Evelyn.

“Your mother.””

Evelyn shook her head.

“No.””

Robert turned the notebook around.

A page was filled with dates and payments.

At the bottom was one name.

*E. Carter.*

Marcus stepped closer.

“Mom.””

“I didn't do that.””

Robert pointed at the entries.

“Your signature is here.””

“I never signed those.””

“Then someone forged your signature.””

Diane suddenly looked at the security tablet.

“Wait.””

She stared at the screen.

“The cameras are back.””

Everyone turned.

Diane's face changed.

“Someone accessed the security system.””

“What did they do?”” Marcus asked.

“They didn't just turn the cameras back on.””

She swallowed.

“They uploaded a file.””

“What file?””

Diane tapped the screen.

A video began playing.

It showed the wedding lounge from earlier.

But this time, the footage was from a hidden camera.

Vanessa tearing her sleeve.

Evelyn standing several feet away.

Marcus entering.

The slap.

Everything.

Then the video continued beyond what the venue cameras had captured.

The hidden camera turned.

It showed the person holding it.

A woman.

She was standing in the corridor outside the lounge.

Her face was clear.

I recognized her.

So did Marcus.

So did Evelyn.

It was the woman who had handed me my wedding bouquet that morning.

Our wedding planner.

She looked directly into the hidden camera.

Then smiled.

Her voice came through the ballroom speakers.

“You finally found each other.””

Camille's face went pale.

“She's here.””

The planner stepped into the ballroom.

She removed the wedding veil she had been wearing as part of the ceremony setup.

Underneath it was a small microphone.

Marcus stared.

“Who are you?””

She smiled.

“My name is Rachel.””

Camille whispered, “Rachel Morgan.””

Robert went rigid.

“You died.””

Rachel laughed.

“No.””

She looked at me.

“Your mother thought I died.””

I stepped backward.

“Why were you watching me?””

Rachel smiled.

“Because your father left one final instruction.””

“What instruction?””

She looked around the locked ballroom.

“To make sure you never reached your thirtieth birthday with the truth.””

She pulled a remote from her pocket.

The giant screen behind the stage flickered.

A countdown appeared.

*04:59*

Marcus looked at Diane.

“What happens in five minutes?””

Diane's face went white.

“The building's emergency system.””

“What about it?””

“It automatically releases the fire suppression system.””

Camille stared at Rachel.

“You wouldn't.””

Rachel smiled.

“Your daughter has four minutes and fifty seconds to decide who she trusts.””

The countdown began.

*04:48.*

May you like

And then Rachel pointed directly at Evelyn.

“Because one of them is still lying.””
