Chapter 7: The Child in the Photograph

Every lock clicked at once.

The sound was small.

Almost polite.

But in a room full of frightened people, it sounded like a gunshot.

The reception hall erupted.

Someone screamed.

A chair scraped violently across the floor. A woman near the cake table grabbed her husband's arm. Two bridesmaids rushed toward the doors, only to stop when the handles refused to move.

Diane lifted her security tablet.

“No signal,” she said.

Marcus turned toward her.

“What do you mean, no signal?””

“The cameras are down.””

“Can you unlock the doors?””

“Not from here.””

Daniel stood perfectly still in the middle of the crowd.

He didn't look frightened.

That frightened me more than the locked doors.

Marcus stepped toward him.

“You did this.””

Daniel's expression barely changed.

“No.””

“You expect me to believe that?””

“I expect you to understand that I'm not the only person who wants you trapped in this room.””

Marcus grabbed Daniel by the lapel.

“Who?””

Daniel looked at his hand.

“Your father.””

“My father has been dead for thirteen years.””

Daniel's eyes hardened.

“Then maybe you should finally ask yourself what else he lied about.””

Marcus shoved him backward.

“You've been stalking my family.””

“I've been watching the people who killed my sister.””

Evelyn gasped.

“Daniel.””

He turned toward her.

“You knew.””

“I knew nothing about Camille's death.””

“You knew she disappeared.””

“I knew she was gone.””

“You knew your husband was involved.””

Evelyn's face crumpled.

“I suspected.””

Daniel laughed bitterly.

“Suspected?””

He pulled another photograph from his jacket.

“This is Camille three days before she disappeared.””

He held it up.

She was standing beside an old blue sedan.

Her hair was longer than in the other photograph.

She was smiling.

And in her arms was a baby.

I stared at the baby's face.

Something about it felt familiar.

Not because I remembered it.

Because I had seen that photograph before.

I reached for it.

Daniel hesitated.

Then handed it to me.

My fingers closed around the paper.

On the back, someone had written:

*Vanessa — 11 weeks old.*

My breath caught.

“I was eleven weeks old.””

Daniel nodded.

“According to the hospital records.””

Marcus looked at me.

“What hospital?””

I turned the photograph over.

A hospital name was written underneath the date.

St. Catherine's.

My childhood medical records had always listed St. Catherine's as my birthplace.

But there was something else.

A second line.

*Mother: Camille Reed.*

My hand began shaking.

“I don't understand.””

Daniel's voice softened.

“Your mother gave birth to you.””

“I know.””

“No.””

He stepped closer.

“Your mother gave birth to you, and your father came to the hospital that night.””

I looked at him.

“My father?””

Daniel nodded.

“James Carter.””

Marcus went still.

“You knew him?””

“I knew him very well.””

Daniel's eyes moved toward Evelyn.

“He wasn't a good man.””

Evelyn whispered, “Don't.””

Daniel ignored her.

“He took the baby.””

My stomach turned.

“What?””

“He told Camille he was taking Vanessa somewhere safe.””

Marcus looked at me.

“Why would he do that?””

“Because someone was threatening to expose him.””

“Expose what?””

Daniel looked directly at me.

“Your father had been stealing money from a company he co-owned with me.””

Marcus's face tightened.

“That doesn't explain taking a baby.””

“It does when the baby was evidence.””

“Evidence of what?””

Daniel looked at the photograph.

“You weren't just his daughter.””

He paused.

“You were the reason he couldn't destroy the evidence.””

I stared at him.

“I don't understand.””

“Your mother had copies of financial records.””

“What records?””

“Transfers. Offshore accounts. Names.””

Daniel's voice lowered.

“She hid the files in a place she believed James would never search.””

Marcus whispered, “The storage unit.””

Daniel nodded.

“Exactly.””

Evelyn looked toward the locked doors.

“That's why Robert found them.””

Daniel smiled without humor.

“Robert found them because I told him where to look.””

Marcus turned sharply.

“You two have been working together?””

“For months.””

“Why didn't you tell me?””

“Because we didn't know who we could trust.””

Marcus looked at me.

I felt my stomach drop.

“Not even me?””

Daniel's eyes met mine.

“Especially you.””

I recoiled.

“What does that mean?””

“It means someone has been feeding you information since before you met Marcus.””

“I don't know what you're talking about.””

“You received an anonymous envelope six months ago.””

I froze.

Marcus noticed.

“What envelope?””

I couldn't answer.

Daniel continued.

“A photograph of James Carter.””

Marcus stared at me.

“Vanessa?””

I swallowed.

“I thought it was spam.””

“You kept it.””

I looked away.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because I didn't know who sent it.””

Marcus stepped closer.

“Why didn't you tell me?””

“Because I was afraid.””

“Afraid of what?””

I finally looked at him.

“That your father was connected to my mother.””

Marcus's face softened for a second.

Then hardened again.

“And instead of telling me, you married me.””

“I didn't know the truth.””

“But you suspected.””

“Yes.””

The word hung between us.

Evelyn closed her eyes.

Marcus turned away.

Daniel stepped forward.

“And that's why the person who locked these doors wants you here.””

I looked at him.

“Why?””

“Because everyone who knows the truth is in this room.””

Diane's tablet suddenly beeped.

She looked down.

A red notification appeared.

*MANUAL SECURITY OVERRIDE — BASEMENT ACCESS*

Diane's eyes widened.

“Someone is opening the service corridor.””

Marcus looked toward the hallway.

“What does that mean?””

“It means whoever shut us in is still inside the building.””

The lights flickered.

Once.

Twice.

Then every screen in the ballroom turned on.

The projector above the stage came alive.

A grainy video appeared.

It showed an old hospital corridor.

Evelyn recognized it immediately.

“Oh God.””

Marcus looked at her.

“Mom?””

The footage showed a younger James Carter walking down the corridor carrying a baby.

A nurse followed him.

Then Camille appeared at the end of the hallway.

She was running.

Crying.

Trying to catch him.

The video stopped.

A sentence appeared on the screen.

*ASK EVELYN WHAT HAPPENED NEXT.*

Every face in the room turned toward her.

Evelyn covered her mouth.

Marcus stepped toward his mother.

“Mom.””

She shook her head.

“I can't.””

“You have to.””

“I can't.””

“Tell me.””

Evelyn's eyes filled with tears.

“Your father came to me that night.””

Marcus stopped.

“What did he say?””

“He told me Vanessa was dead.””

I felt the room disappear.

“What?””

Evelyn looked at me.

“He told me the baby had died.””

Marcus stared at her.

“You believed him?””

“I had no reason not to.””

“Then why did you keep this secret?””

“Because he made me promise.””

“A promise to what?””

Evelyn's voice broke.

“To raise you without ever asking where the baby went.””

Marcus stepped backward.

“You knew?””

“I knew he had taken a child.””

“But you didn't know it was Vanessa.””

“No.””

Evelyn looked at me.

“I swear.””

Daniel suddenly shouted.

“Everyone down!””

A loud crack exploded from somewhere near the ceiling.

The projector shattered.

Glass rained onto the stage.

People screamed and dropped to the floor.

Diane grabbed my arm.

Marcus grabbed Evelyn.

Robert pulled Daniel behind a pillar.

The room fell into darkness.

Then a phone began ringing.

Not mine.

Not Marcus's.

Evelyn's.

She stared at it.

The screen showed an unknown number.

Marcus whispered, “Don't answer.””

Evelyn answered anyway.

She lifted the phone to her ear.

“Hello?””

A distorted voice spoke.

Evelyn's face went white.

The voice said one sentence.

“Tell Vanessa why you really raised her.””

Then the call ended.

Evelyn slowly lowered the phone.

Marcus looked at her.

“What does that mean?””

She looked at me.

And this time, there was no fear in her face.

Only shame.

May you like

“Vanessa,” she whispered.

“I need to tell you what your father asked me to do.””
