Chapter 2: The Family They Never Knew

The first thing everyone noticed was the sound.

The heavy click of the main doors locking echoed through the wedding hall.

Guests turned toward the entrance.

Confusion spread faster than fear.

“What’s happening?””

“Are we being locked in?””

Daniel looked at me.

For the first time in years, I saw uncertainty on his face.

Not concern.

Not love.

Fear.

“Who did you call?”” he asked.

I slipped my phone into my hand.

“My father.””

His expression hardened.

“Your father?””

“Yes.””

Chloe laughed.

A sharp, nervous laugh.

“Daniel, she’s bluffing.””

I looked at her.

“You should hope I am.””

The confidence disappeared from her face.

Because she knew something Daniel had forgotten.

I came from a family that did not fight loudly.

We fought quietly.

My father had always told me one thing.

“Never mistake patience for weakness.””

For three years, I had been patient.

I had ignored insults.

I had forgiven cruelty.

I had believed love meant enduring difficult people.

I was wrong.

Sometimes silence only teaches people they can hurt you without consequences.

A side door opened.

Three men in dark suits entered the hall.

The guests immediately moved aside.

Behind them walked my father.

Richard Hayes.

The man who had built one of the largest private security companies on the East Coast.

The man who taught me how to stand up for myself.

The man who had spent three years watching me come home from Ashford family dinners with tears hidden behind a smile.

His eyes found my torn dress.

Then my face.

The entire room became silent.

“Who did this?”” he asked.

Nobody answered.

My father looked at Daniel.

“Son-in-law.””

Daniel swallowed.

“Mr. Hayes, this is a misunderstanding.””

My father walked closer.

“A misunderstanding?””

He looked at the torn silk hanging from my body.

“At eight months pregnant?””

Daniel opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

Chloe stepped forward.

“Your daughter stole my ring.””

My father turned toward her.

“Your evidence?””

She hesitated.

“She had access.””

“That is not evidence.””

Eleanor stepped forward.

“You don’t understand the situation.””

My father smiled.

A cold smile.

“I understand perfectly.””

He pointed toward the broken dress.

“I understand that your daughter accused my pregnant daughter of theft.””

Then he looked at Daniel.

“I understand that my son-in-law took his wife’s purse and handed it to the person attacking her.””

Daniel’s face went pale.

“Mr. Hayes—”

“No.””

My father’s voice was quiet.

That was worse.

“No excuses.””

I watched Daniel look at me.

Maybe he expected me to defend him.

Maybe he expected me to soften.

I didn’t.

Because I had spent years protecting a man who never protected me.

My father turned to me.

“Are you hurt?””

I shook my head.

“The baby is okay.””

His expression softened.

Only for me.

Then he turned back.

“Good.””

He looked around the room.

“Now we discuss what happened.””

Chloe crossed her arms.

“This is ridiculous. You are making a scene at my wedding.””

I almost smiled.

Her wedding.

She still thought this was about her.

My father glanced at the guests.

“Everyone here witnessed a crime.””

Eleanor scoffed.

“A crime?””

“Yes.””

He pointed toward my dress.

“Assault.””

The room erupted.

Whispers.

Questions.

Phones appearing from pockets.

Chloe’s face changed.

“You wouldn’t dare.””

My father looked at her.

“You have no idea what I would dare.””

Then one of his men approached him and whispered something.

My father nodded.

“Bring it in.””

Minutes later, a woman entered carrying a small box.

Chloe’s face went white.

Because she recognized it.

“What is that?”” Daniel asked.

The woman placed the box on the table.

My father opened it.

Inside was a necklace.

And attached to it—

A tiny camera.

The room went silent.

“What is that?”” Eleanor demanded.

My father looked at Chloe.

“The answer to the question you should have asked before accusing my daughter.””

Chloe stepped backward.

“No.””

My father pressed a button.

The screen behind the wedding stage flickered.

And suddenly everyone saw the footage.

The hallway outside the bridal room.

Chloe walking alone.

Holding the ring.

And then—

She looked directly into the camera.

She smiled.

“I’ll make sure she pays for embarrassing me.””

The room exploded with shocked voices.

Daniel stared at his sister.

“No…”

Chloe’s face drained of color.

“It’s fake.””

My father turned off the screen.

“Unfortunately for you, it is very real.””

I looked at Daniel.

He looked destroyed.

But I felt nothing.

Because the worst betrayal had already happened.

Before the video.

Before the truth.

Before my father walked in.

My husband had already chosen them.

Then my father’s assistant rushed into the room holding a folder.

“Mr. Hayes.””

My father opened it.

His eyes moved across the pages.

Then he looked at Daniel.

“Interesting.””

Daniel frowned.

“What?””

My father slowly closed the folder.

“Your wife has been betrayed for much longer than tonight.””

I felt my stomach tighten.

“What does that mean?””

My father looked at me.

May you like

And the next words changed everything.

“It means Daniel knew about the ring plan before this wedding started.””
