Chapter 3: The Secret Behind the Smile

The silence after my father’s words felt heavier than the accusation itself.

I turned toward Daniel.

“No.””

He looked away.

That tiny movement told me everything.

A person who is innocent looks you in the eyes.

A person who is guilty searches for somewhere else to stand.

“Daniel,” I whispered.

He finally looked at me.

“Please let me explain.””

I laughed softly.

Not because it was funny.

Because I couldn’t believe this was my life.

“Explain what?””

His face tightened.

“I knew Chloe was upset.””

“Upset?””

I stared at him.

“She destroyed my dress.””

“I didn’t know she would do that.””

“But you knew she planned something.””

Daniel said nothing.

That was the answer.

Three years.

Three years of defending him.

Three years of telling myself he was caught between his wife and his family.

But he wasn’t trapped.

He was participating.

My father stepped closer.

“She told you she wanted to expose your wife tonight.””

Daniel looked down.

“I thought she would just scare her.””

My chest tightened.

“You thought humiliating me was acceptable?””

“No.””

“Yes.””

My voice became stronger.

“You did.””

The guests watched silently.

For once, nobody interrupted me.

Nobody told me to be patient.

Nobody told me family came first.

Because now they understood.

I had been the only one losing.

Chloe suddenly shouted.

“This is all because of her!””

Everyone turned.

She pointed at me.

“She came into our family and changed everything.””

I looked at her.

“Changed what?””

“You took Daniel away.””

I almost felt sorry for her.

Almost.

“You mean I married him?””

Her face twisted.

“You think you belong here?””

My father stepped forward.

“She belongs anywhere she chooses.””

Chloe laughed.

“Your daughter always plays the victim.””

My father looked at the guests.

“Does anyone here still believe that?””

Nobody spoke.

Because the evidence was sitting behind them.

My father’s assistant approached again.

“Sir, there’s more.””

Daniel looked nervous.

“What more?””

The assistant opened another file.

“These are financial records.””

Eleanor’s expression changed.

“What does this have to do with anything?””

My father looked at her.

“Everything.””

He handed the documents to Daniel.

Daniel read the first page.

Then the second.

His face lost color.

“What is this?””

I stepped closer.

“What?””

Daniel looked at his mother.

“You transferred money from our joint account.””

Eleanor froze.

“That’s impossible.””

“It’s right here.””

The room erupted again.

Apparently, while everyone had been watching me, another secret had been waiting.

My father looked at me.

“I told you I would protect you.””

I nodded.

But my eyes stayed on Daniel.

Because the money mattered less than the betrayal.

He had let them attack me.

Because he thought I had nowhere else to go.

He forgot one thing.

I was never alone.

A phone suddenly rang.

Everyone looked around.

It was Chloe’s phone.

She answered nervously.

“Hello?””

Her expression changed.

“What?””

She stepped away.

“No, that wasn’t supposed to happen.””

My father noticed.

“So did we.””

Chloe slowly lowered the phone.

“What did you do?””

My father smiled.

“Nothing.””

Then he looked at me.

“Your husband did.””

Daniel frowned.

“What does that mean?””

My father handed him a document.

Daniel read it.

Then his hands started shaking.

Because at the bottom of the page was his signature.

The signature approving the transfer.

The signature he thought nobody would ever see.

The signature that proved he wasn’t just silent.

He was involved.

Daniel looked at me.

“I can explain.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

“Please.””

“No more explanations.””

I touched my stomach.

“Our child will grow up knowing one thing.””

Daniel’s eyes filled.

“What?””

I looked at him.

“That their mother chose herself when their father wouldn’t.””

Then my father’s assistant received another message.

He read it.

His expression changed.

“Mr. Hayes.””

My father looked up.

“What?””

The assistant whispered.

“Someone else just arrived.””

May you like

The doors opened.

And the person standing there was the last person I expected to see.
