Chapter 7: The Woman Who Erased My Past
The woman introduced herself as Clara Whitmore.
She was calm.
Too calm.
The kind of calm people had when they had spent years hiding things.
She stood beneath the streetlight with the folder pressed against her chest.
“I know you hate me,” she said.
I stared at her.
“I don’t even know who you are.””
Her eyes lowered.
“That’s because I made sure you wouldn’t.””
My father stepped forward.
“Clara, leave.””
She ignored him.
“I was your mother’s attorney.””
My breathing slowed.
“My mother?””
“Yes.””
Andrew looked at her with disgust.
“You helped him.””
Clara looked ashamed.
“I helped your mother.””
Nobody spoke.
The street felt frozen in time.
I looked at her.
“Start explaining.””
She opened the folder.
Inside were documents.
Old documents.
The kind that carried the weight of decades.
“When your mother left Andrew, she was afraid.””
Andrew laughed bitterly.
“Of course she was.””
Clara looked at him.
“She was afraid because you threatened to take the child away.””
Andrew’s expression changed.
“I never—”
“She recorded everything.””
Clara pulled out a small device.
“Audiotapes.””
My father looked surprised.
“You still have those?””
“Yes.””
She turned to me.
“Your mother wanted you protected.””
I looked at Andrew.
“Was he dangerous?””
Andrew’s face hardened.
“She misunderstood me.””
That answer bothered me.
Not because it proved guilt.
Because it sounded exactly like Daniel.
Everyone who hurt me had a reason.
Everyone wanted me to believe their intentions mattered more than their actions.
Clara continued.
“Your mother asked Richard to help.””
My father nodded slowly.
“She knew I would protect Eve.””
“You changed my identity,” I said.
His eyes filled.
“Yes.””
“You lied to me.””
“Yes.””
The honesty hurt more than another excuse.
“Why?””
My father looked at me.
“Because Andrew found her.””
Andrew stepped forward.
“And you kidnapped my daughter.””
My father’s voice became louder.
“I saved her.””
“You stole her.””
“I gave her a life.””
“You took mine away.””
The argument exploded.
Two fathers.
Two stories.
One daughter.
Me.
I looked at Clara.
“What happened to my mother?””
Her expression softened.
“She died three years after you were hidden.””
The world went quiet.
I knew my mother had died.
But I had never known there was a story behind it.
I had always believed it was simple.
An illness.
A tragedy.
A normal loss.
Apparently, nothing about my life had ever been normal.
“Did she know I was safe?””
Clara nodded.
“She knew.””
“Did she know my name?””
A tear slipped down Clara’s face.
“She knew everything.””
I looked at my father.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
He had no answer.
Because there wasn’t one.
The next morning, I woke up in my father’s guest room.
I had barely slept.
My mind kept replaying everything.
Daniel.
The wedding.
Andrew.
My mother.
The lies.
Then my phone rang.
Daniel.
I stared at the screen.
Part of me wanted to ignore him.
Another part needed answers.
I answered.
“Eve.””
His voice sounded broken.
“Where are you?””
“Why?””
“I need to talk to you.””
I almost laughed.
“You needed to talk before you handed my purse to Chloe.””
Silence.
Then:
“I know.””
“You knew?””
“No.””
His voice cracked.
“I mean… I know now.””
I closed my eyes.
“What do you want, Daniel?””
“I want to fix this.””
“You can’t.””
“Please.””
I heard him breathe.
“Your father’s people came to my house.””
“And?””
“He showed me everything.””
I didn’t respond.
“He showed me the messages between Chloe and my mother.””
My fingers tightened around the phone.
“What messages?””
Daniel hesitated.
“They planned everything.””
I already knew.
But hearing him admit it felt different.
“They wanted to destroy you.””
“Yes.””
“They wanted me to leave you.””
“Yes.””
A long silence.
Then Daniel whispered:
“I was going to.””
My heart stopped.
“What?””
“After the baby was born.””
I felt numb.
“You were going to leave me?””
“I thought…”
“No.””
My voice became cold.
“You don’t get to explain.””
“I was wrong.””
“You weren’t confused.””
I stood up.
“You made a choice.””
Daniel started crying.
“I love you.””
I looked out the window.
At the garden.
At the peaceful morning.
A world away from the chaos.
“No.””
My voice was quiet.
“You loved having me.””
The line went silent.
Then Daniel said:
“Eve, there’s something else.””
I waited.
“Chloe didn’t steal the ring.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“She was told to accuse you.””
“By who?””
Daniel hesitated.
Then he whispered:
“Someone who knew about your past.””
My blood ran cold.
“Who?””
His answer came slowly.
“The person who gave Chloe the idea.””
I gripped the phone.
“Daniel.””
“I saw the messages.””
“Who?””
A pause.
May you like
Then:
“Andrew Vale.””
