Chapter 9: The Truth My Mother Left Behind

The name on the paper was Vincent Cross.

I had never heard it before.

But Andrew had.

And the fear on his face told me everything.

“Who is he?””

Nobody answered.

I looked at Andrew.

“You brought me here. You wanted the truth. So tell me.””

He sat back slowly.

“Vincent was your mother’s brother.””

I frowned.

“My uncle?””

“Yes.””

“And he’s my enemy?””

Andrew nodded.

“Your mother discovered he was involved in illegal business.””

I stared.

“Why didn’t she tell anyone?””

“She tried.””

Andrew looked at the letter.

“But Vincent controlled people.””

I thought about Daniel.

Chloe.

Eleanor.

The manipulation.

The planning.

Suddenly, everything felt connected.

“He knew about me?””

“Yes.””

“Then why attack me now?””

Andrew looked at me.

“Because you inherited something.””

“What?””

He hesitated.

“Your mother’s company.””

I blinked.

“What company?””

Andrew gave a sad smile.

“The one you never knew existed.””

My father later confirmed it.

My mother had created a successful investment company before she died.

A company placed into a trust.

A trust that belonged to me.

And the moment I turned thirty, control would transfer.

The timing was not a coincidence.

My birthday was three months away.

Everyone wanted something.

The Ashfords wanted status.

Andrew wanted revenge.

Vincent wanted control.

And I had spent my whole life believing I was powerless.

The next week, I returned to the Ashford estate.

Not as a victim.

As someone who finally understood her own value.

Daniel was waiting outside.

He looked different.

Smaller.

Broken.

“I know you don’t forgive me.””

I didn’t answer.

“I know I ruined everything.””

“Yes.””

He swallowed.

“But I want to help.””

I studied him.

“Why?””

“Because it’s right.””

The answer surprised me.

Not because I believed him.

Because I wanted to.

But wanting something didn’t make it true.

“I need honesty.””

“You have it.””

“No more hiding.””

“No more.””

I looked at him.

“Then start.””

Daniel nodded.

“Chloe has been meeting someone.””

“Who?””

He handed me a file.

Inside were photographs.

Chloe.

Vincent.

Together.

My stomach tightened.

“She was working with him?””

Daniel nodded.

“She didn’t know everything.””

“But she knew enough.””

“Yes.””

I closed the file.

For the first time, I understood something.

The wedding wasn’t the attack.

It was the opening move.

They wanted me emotional.

Distracted.

Alone.

They underestimated one thing.

I had finally stopped being afraid.

The confrontation happened two weeks later.

Vincent arrived at my father’s office expecting to intimidate me.

Instead, he found cameras.

Lawyers.

Documents.

Evidence.

He smiled.

“You think you’ve won?””

I looked at him.

“No.””

I surprised him.

“I think you made the mistake of showing me who you are.””

His smile faded.

“You’re just like your mother.””

“Thank you.””

The room went silent.

Because for years, everyone had told me I was weak.

Too soft.

Too forgiving.

But my mother wasn’t weak.

She survived.

And so would I.

Vincent’s confidence cracked.

“You don’t know what you’re dealing with.””

I stepped closer.

“I know exactly what I’m dealing with.””

I placed the evidence on the table.

“You.””

His lawyer whispered something.

Vincent’s face changed.

Because he realized the game was over.

But before he left, he looked at me.

“You think this ends here?””

I held his stare.

“Yes.””

May you like

And for the first time…

I believed it.
