Chapter 4: The Woman Who Knew the Truth

I turned around slowly.

A woman stood near the garden entrance.

Older.

Tired.

Holding an umbrella despite the clear sky.

“Who are you?””

She stepped closer.

“My name is Rachel.””

The name meant nothing.

But the fear in her eyes did.

“You knew my mother.””

Rachel nodded.

“She was my best friend.””

I held the blue notebook tighter.

“You knew about Vanessa?””

Rachel looked at the notebook.

“She knew about Vanessa first.””

The pain in my chest grew.

“Then why didn’t anyone help her?””

Rachel looked down.

“Because your mother tried.””

“Your father stopped her.””

The words felt like a physical blow.

I wanted to defend him.

I wanted to say she was wrong.

But I couldn’t.

Not anymore.

“What happened?””

Rachel sat on the bench.

“Your mother discovered Vanessa was stealing from your father’s company. Small amounts at first. Then bigger ones.””

“Why would Dad let that happen?””

“Because Vanessa convinced him your mother was imagining things.””

I looked away.

“She manipulated him.””

“Yes.””

Rachel paused.

“But your father also made choices.””

That hurt.

Because it was true.

“What was the recording?””

Rachel looked at the notebook.

“Your mother recorded Vanessa admitting everything.””

“Then why didn’t she expose her?””

“Because Vanessa threatened you.””

My blood turned cold.

“She threatened me?””

Rachel nodded.

“She told your mother that if she went to the police, she would make sure you lost your father too.””

I closed my eyes.

My mother wasn’t weak.

She was protecting me.

Even while she was dying.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Rachel’s eyes filled with tears.

“Your father made me promise.””

There it was.

Again.

My father.

The man who had chosen silence.

A sound came from behind us.

A familiar voice.

“Emily.””

I turned.

My father stood there.

And beside him…

Vanessa.

My heart dropped.

Vanessa looked at the notebook.

Her face changed.

No more fake kindness.

No more pretending.

“Give that to me.””

I stepped back.

“No.””

My father looked broken.

“Emily, listen.””

“No. You listen.””

My voice shook.

“You knew.””

He didn’t answer.

That was an answer.

Vanessa walked forward.

“You don’t understand what you found.””

“I understand enough.””

She laughed quietly.

“You think your mother was some hero?””

My hands curled into fists.

“She was.””

Vanessa’s eyes narrowed.

“Your mother was sick. She was obsessed with controlling everything.””

Rachel stood.

“Don’t do this, Vanessa.””

Vanessa looked at her.

“You should have stayed quiet.””

“You should have left Claire alone.””

The way Vanessa reacted told me everything.

She hated hearing my mother’s name.

My father stepped between us.

“Enough.””

I looked at him.

“Dad, tell me she’s lying.””

He opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

The silence destroyed the last piece of trust I had left.

Then Vanessa whispered:

“Daniel, we don’t have a choice anymore.””

I looked at my father.

“What does that mean?””

He looked terrified.

Not guilty.

Terrified.

Then his phone rang.

He answered.

His face changed.

“What?””

A pause.

Then:

“No, that’s impossible.””

He looked at me.

And I knew something else had happened.

Something bigger.

“What is it?”” Vanessa asked.

My father slowly lowered the phone.

“The police found something.””

My heart raced.

“What?””

He looked at Vanessa.

“They found the original evidence from Claire’s case.””

Vanessa went completely still.

Because she knew.

She knew exactly what evidence he meant.

And then my father said the words that changed everything:

“They found the video.””
