Chapter 6: The Name Behind the Secret

The photograph stayed on my desk for three days.

I couldn’t touch it.

I couldn’t throw it away.

I couldn’t understand it.

The message on the back kept replaying in my mind.

*“Emily, there is one person who helped Vanessa… and you know him better than anyone.””*

I had spent years believing my enemy was obvious.

Vanessa.

The woman who burned my mother’s memories.

The woman who lied to my father.

The woman who slapped me and told me she was my mother.

But now I was staring at proof that there was someone else.

Someone closer.

Someone I trusted.

My father.

Or at least, that was what I thought.

I sat alone in the kitchen, holding the photograph under the morning sunlight.

It showed my mother standing outside our old house.

She was smiling.

Next to her was a man.

My heart stopped.

I knew him.

Not because he was family.

Because I had seen him hundreds of times.

The man standing beside my mother was my father’s best friend.

Michael Hayes.

My father’s business partner.

The man who gave a speech at my mother’s funeral.

The man who hugged me afterward and said, “Your mom loved you more than anything in this world.””

My fingers went numb.

“No…”

I whispered the word.

Because I didn’t want it to be true.

I grabbed my phone and called Rachel.

She answered after the second ring.

“Emily?””

“Did my mother know Michael Hayes?””

Silence.

A long, painful silence.

Then Rachel sighed.

“Yes.””

“How well?””

“Too well.””

I stood.

“What does that mean?””

Rachel lowered her voice.

“Your mother trusted Michael. At first.””

The words made my stomach twist.

“At first?””

“Emily, there are things I never told you because your mother asked me not to.””

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

My voice cracked.

“Everyone knew something was wrong, and everyone decided I was better off living a lie.””

Rachel didn’t argue.

Because she knew I was right.

“Your mother discovered Vanessa wasn’t working alone.””

I gripped the counter.

“Michael?””

“Yes.””

The room spun.

“What did he do?””

Rachel took a deep breath.

“He helped hide the money transfers.””

I closed my eyes.

The betrayal felt heavier than Vanessa’s.

Because Vanessa was someone I never truly trusted.

But Michael?

Michael was the person who brought me birthday gifts after my mother died.

He was the person who told me my father was hurting too.

He was the person who made me believe there were still good people around me.

“How did Mom find out?””

“She saw emails between Michael and Vanessa.””

“What kind of emails?””

Rachel hesitated.

“The kind where they discussed what would happen after your mother was gone.””

My heart pounded.

“After she was gone?””

“Yes.””

The silence afterward felt unbearable.

I looked back at the photograph.

My mother wasn’t smiling because she was happy.

She was smiling because she trusted someone who didn’t deserve it.

“Where is Michael now?””

Rachel answered quietly.

“He still works with your father.””

Of course.

I laughed bitterly.

Of course he did.

That afternoon, I went straight to my father’s office.

He looked surprised when I entered.

“Emily?””

I placed the photograph on his desk.

The color drained from his face.

“Where did you get that?””

“Why does everyone ask that instead of answering my questions?””

He looked at the picture.

Then away.

“Emily…”

“No.””

I stepped closer.

“Not this time.””

His shoulders dropped.

“What do you want to know?””

“The truth.””

He closed his eyes.

“I made mistakes.””

“That’s not an answer.””

“I trusted the wrong people.””

“Did you trust Michael?””

My father froze.

That was enough.

I felt something break inside me.

“You knew.””

He sat down.

“I suspected.””

“You suspected?””

My voice rose.

“My mother died, and you suspected the people around her were hurting her?””

“I was trying to protect you.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You were protecting yourself.””

He didn’t respond.

Because he knew.

I walked toward the door.

“Emily.””

I stopped.

His voice sounded different.

Not like my father.

Like a man who had finally realized he had lost everything.

“Your mother left something else.””

I turned.

“What?””

He opened a drawer.

Inside was a small envelope.

“I found this after she died.””

I stared at it.

“Why didn’t you give it to me?””

His eyes filled with regret.

“Because I was afraid of what it would say.””

I slowly took the envelope.

The handwriting was my mother’s.

Again.

Inside was a single page.

Only one sentence.

The person who betrayed me is not the person you think.

I looked at my father.

“What does this mean?””

He shook his head.

“I don’t know.””

But I noticed something.

His hands were trembling.

Not because he was confused.

Because he was scared.

That night, I opened my mother’s message.

And beneath the sentence was another line.

May you like

A line that changed everything.

If Michael is exposed, he will reveal what your father did to protect him.
