Chapter 7: The Choice My Father Made

I didn’t sleep.

Not even for a minute.

The words from my mother’s letter stayed in my mind.

*What your father did to protect him.*

My father wasn’t innocent.

I knew that now.

But I still didn’t know how deep his betrayal went.

The next morning, I went to his office again.

This time, I didn’t knock.

He looked up.

“Emily.””

“Tell me everything.””

He stared at me.

“I don’t know where to start.””

“Start with the truth.””

He leaned back slowly.

“When your mother discovered Vanessa and Michael were working together, she confronted me.””

I stayed silent.

“She wanted to go to the police.””

“Why didn’t she?””

His eyes dropped.

“Because I stopped her.””

The words hit harder than I expected.

“Why?””

“Because Michael was my partner.””

I laughed.

“You chose your business partner over your wife?””

“No.””

He shook his head quickly.

“I chose fear.””

That answer surprised me.

He continued.

“I thought I could fix it quietly. I thought I could recover the money, force Michael out, and protect our family.””

“But?””

“But Vanessa found out your mother knew.””

The room became cold.

“What happened next?””

My father looked at the floor.

“Vanessa threatened to destroy everything.””

“Meaning?””

“She threatened to tell people your mother was unstable.””

I clenched my fists.

“She was going to make Mom look crazy.””

“Yes.””

“And you let her?””

“No.””

His voice cracked.

“I tried to stop it.””

“But you failed.””

“Yes.””

The honesty hurt.

Because for years, I wanted my father to deny everything.

I wanted him to say he was tricked.

That he had no choice.

But the truth was worse.

He had choices.

He just made the wrong ones.

“Why didn’t you tell me after Mom died?””

“Because I was ashamed.””

I looked at him.

“You were ashamed?””

He nodded.

“I lost your mother because I was too afraid to stand beside her.””

For the first time, I saw something different in my father.

Not an excuse.

Regret.

But regret doesn’t erase damage.

It doesn’t bring back years.

It doesn’t remove the memories of standing in a basement while my mother’s belongings burned.

A week later, Michael called me.

I almost didn’t answer.

But curiosity won.

“Emily.””

His voice sounded calm.

Too calm.

“You know, I was hoping we could talk.””

“I don’t want to talk to you.””

“That’s understandable.””

“Then why call?””

A pause.

“Because your mother misunderstood me.””

I almost laughed.

“My mother was right about you.””

“No.””

His voice sharpened.

“She was wrong.””

“Then prove it.””

Silence.

I smiled.

Because I knew I had touched the truth.

“Where did you get that photograph?”” he asked.

My stomach tightened.

“How do you know about the photograph?””

Another silence.

A mistake.

A small one.

But enough.

“Michael…”

He recovered quickly.

“I’m just saying there are things you don’t understand.””

“Like what?””

“Like why your father made the choices he made.””

I stood.

“You mean the choices you forced him to make?””

His breathing changed.

“You sound just like Claire.””

The moment he said my mother’s name, I knew.

He wasn’t just hiding something.

He was afraid of her.

“You knew my mother was going to expose you.””

“No.””

“You knew.””

“Emily, listen to me.””

His voice became colder.

“You’re making a mistake.””

Then he said something I would never forget.

“Your mother wasn’t killed by Vanessa.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

The line went silent.

“Michael?””

But he had already hung up.

I stood frozen.

Because one question suddenly became impossible to ignore.

My mother died after a sudden illness.

That was what everyone told me.

That was what my father told me.

That was what Vanessa told everyone.

But Michael’s words meant one thing.

Someone had lied.

And the next morning, when I opened my mother’s old medical records…

I found a document that was never supposed to exist.

A doctor’s note.

Written two days before my mother died.

It said:

*“Patient suspects intentional poisoning.””*
