Chapter 8: The Truth My Mother Never Got to Tell
I read the doctor’s note again and again.
The words didn’t change.
They stayed there.
Cold.
Impossible.
*Patient suspects intentional poisoning.*
My mother knew.
She knew someone was trying to hurt her.
And nobody told me.
I drove straight to Rachel’s house.
When she opened the door and saw my face, she immediately knew something had happened.
“What did you find?””
I handed her the document.
Her expression changed.
“Oh no.””
“You knew?””
She looked away.
“Rachel.””
“I knew she was afraid.””
“That’s not what I asked.””
She closed her eyes.
“Yes.””
The betrayal hurt.
“You knew my mother thought she was being poisoned?””
“She didn’t want you to know.””
“Why?””
“Because you were fourteen.””
I laughed sadly.
“Everyone keeps deciding what I can handle.””
Rachel looked at me.
“Emily, your mother loved you.””
“And she trusted people who lied to her.””
The silence was heavy.
Finally, Rachel said:
“There was one person your mother trusted completely.””
“Who?””
She looked at me.
“Your father.””
I looked away.
“Not anymore.””
Rachel nodded sadly.
“Your father wasn’t the person who poisoned her.””
“I didn’t say he was.””
“But you think he knows who did.””
I didn’t answer.
Because she was right.
That evening, I confronted my father.
I placed the medical note on the table.
He stared at it.
Then he sat down.
“I was hoping you would never find that.””
My heart sank.
“You knew.””
“Yes.””
The word was barely audible.
“You knew Mom was poisoned?””
“No.””
He stood quickly.
“No. I knew she suspected it.””
“Then why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because the investigation went nowhere.””
“Because you stopped it?””
His face changed.
“I didn’t stop it.””
“Then why are there missing records?””
He froze.
I knew immediately.
I had found another crack in the story.
“Dad.””
He sat down.
“There was evidence missing.””
“From where?””
“The hospital.””
“Who took it?””
He didn’t answer.
And then I heard the front door open.
Vanessa.
I turned.
She stood there.
Not in expensive clothes.
Not pretending.
Just angry.
“You should have listened to your father.””
My body went still.
“How are you here?””
She smiled.
“I was released temporarily.””
“Why are you talking like you know something?””
Vanessa looked at my father.
Then me.
“Because I know exactly what happened to Claire.””
My father stepped forward.
“Vanessa, stop.””
“No.””
She laughed.
“You spent years protecting her.””
“Protecting who?”” I asked.
Vanessa looked at me.
“Michael.””
My breath caught.
She continued.
“Your mother discovered everything. The money. The affair. The lies.””
My father’s face went pale.
“Enough.””
Vanessa ignored him.
“She was going to expose all of us.””
“All of us?””
I whispered.
She smiled.
“Yes, Emily.””
Then she said the sentence I never expected.
“Your father wasn’t Michael’s victim.””
The room went silent.
“He was his partner.””
I looked at my father.
“No.””
But my father didn’t deny it.
That was the worst part.
Vanessa walked closer.
“Your father helped Michael cover everything.””
“Why?””
My voice broke.
My father whispered:
“Because I thought I could fix it.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
The man standing in front of me wasn’t the father I remembered.
He was someone who had buried the truth with my mother.
Then Vanessa reached into her bag.
And placed a small bottle on the table.
“I kept this for eight years.””
My eyes widened.
“What is that?””
She smiled.
“The thing your mother was trying to find.””
My father stared at the bottle.
His face lost all color.
Because he recognized it.

And then Vanessa said:
“This is the reason Claire died.””
