Chapter 10: The Letter My Mother Hid

I stared at the envelope sitting on the table.

My name was written across the front.

Not printed.

Not typed.

Handwritten.

The letters were familiar.

My mother’s handwriting.

For a moment, everything else disappeared.

The accusations.

The betrayal.

The broken Christmas tree.

The years of lies.

All I could see was my mother’s name attached to something I had never known existed.

“Where did you get that?”” Grandma asked.

Her voice was different.

Not angry.

Afraid.

Michael looked at her.

“Sarah gave it to me.””

The room went silent.

My father looked confused.

“She gave you something about Emily?””

Michael nodded.

“She knew I had information.””

Grandma stepped forward.

“What information?””

Michael looked at me.

“The kind that changes everything.””

My fingers touched the envelope.

It felt heavier than paper should feel.

Dad moved closer.

“Emily, you don’t have to open that.””

I looked at him.

“Why?””

He didn’t answer.

And that scared me more than anything.

Because my father had spent my entire life trying to protect me from pain.

But now…

he looked like he was protecting me from the truth.

“I need to know,” I whispered.

Grandma placed a hand on my shoulder.

“Then open it.””

I broke the seal.

Inside was a single letter.

The paper was old.

The ink slightly faded.

At the top was a date.

A date from eighteen years ago.

Before I started kindergarten.

Before I knew anything about the world.

I began reading.

My dear Emily,

My throat tightened.

If you are reading this, then the people who promised to protect you have failed to tell you the truth.

I looked up.

Dad closed his eyes.

Grandma looked down.

I continued.

I have spent years wondering if I should tell you. I have rewritten this letter more times than I can count.

My hands shook.

But a mother’s greatest responsibility is not keeping a child comfortable. It is protecting them, even when the truth hurts.

I swallowed.

The room was completely silent.

Emily, your father loves you. Never doubt that.

I looked at Dad.

A tear moved down his face.

But there is something about your birth that you deserve to know.

My heart started pounding.

The next line blurred.

I wiped my eyes.

Before I met Richard, I had a daughter.

I stopped.

A daughter?

I looked at Grandma.

She avoided my eyes.

I kept reading.

Her name was Lily.

My breathing changed.

She was born before I met your father. She was only three years old when she passed away.

I covered my mouth.

I didn’t understand.

Why was my mother telling me this?

After Lily died, I believed I would never have another child. Then I met Richard. Then I had you.

A strange ache filled my chest.

But when you were born, I made a promise.

I read slower.

I promised I would never let grief make me love one child less than another.

I frowned.

One child?

Then I saw the next sentence.

And everything stopped.

Emily, before you were born, there was another baby.

I looked up.

“What?””

Nobody moved.

Dad whispered:

“Sarah…”

I kept reading.

The doctors told me I had lost the baby.

My hands trembled.

But years later, I discovered the records were wrong.

The room became cold.

“Wrong?”” I whispered.

Grandma closed her eyes.

Michael looked away.

There was another child.

I couldn’t breathe.

Another daughter.

The words felt impossible.

She survived.

My eyes moved across the page faster.

She was adopted through a private arrangement before I knew what had happened.

I looked up.

“Wait.””

My voice cracked.

“My mother had another daughter?””

Grandma nodded slowly.

I stared at her.

“You knew?””

Tears filled her eyes.

“Yes.””

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because your mother wanted to tell you herself.””

My eyes returned to the letter.

I spent years searching. I wanted to find her. I wanted to bring her home.

A tear dropped onto the paper.

But someone else found her first.

I froze.

Someone else.

Vanessa discovered the truth before I did.

My stomach dropped.

I looked at Vanessa.

She stood completely still.

She found records connecting our family to the adoption agency. She realized there was another heir.

Another heir.

The words hit me.

She became afraid that this child would return and change everything.

My hands went numb.

Vanessa didn’t want another daughter of mine to exist.

The room went silent.

Even Michael looked uncomfortable.

I looked at Vanessa.

“You knew?””

She didn’t answer.

“YOU KNEW?””

My voice broke.

Vanessa finally spoke.

“I was trying to protect my family.””

My laugh came out broken.

“You mean your life.””

She looked away.

My mother’s letter continued.

Emily, I don’t know what Vanessa has done. But I know she has been searching for my other daughter.

I looked at Michael.

He lowered his eyes.

If you find this letter, please understand something.

I continued.

Your sister is not a threat.

My eyes filled.

She is a missing piece of our family.

The final paragraph made my heart stop.

Her name is Olivia.

I whispered the name.

Olivia.

My sister.

A person I never knew existed.

Then I read the last line.

And Emily, if Vanessa is the reason you found this letter… it means she failed to destroy the truth.

I looked up.

Grandma was crying.

Dad was staring at Vanessa.

And Vanessa looked defeated.

But there was one thing I still didn’t understand.

“If Mom knew…”

My voice shook.

“Why didn’t she tell me?””

Grandma answered quietly.

“Because she never found Olivia.””

Michael looked toward the window.

“Yes.””

Everyone turned.

“What?””

Michael’s face was serious.

“Sarah found the records.””

He paused.

“But Vanessa found Olivia first.””

My heart dropped.

“Where is she?””

Michael looked at me.

May you like

And his answer changed everything.

“She’s closer than you think.””
