Chapter 6: The Secret Everyone Hid

Nobody spoke.

Not for several seconds.

The only sound was the ticking clock above the fireplace.

A clock my mother bought when I was little.

A clock Vanessa had tried to replace twice.

I stared at the letter.

At my father.

At Vanessa.

“The child you believe is yours…”

The sentence repeated in my mind.

My hands were cold.

“What does that mean?””

Nobody answered.

Dad looked at Vanessa.

“What is she talking about?””

Vanessa’s face had lost all color.

“Richard…”

“No.””

His voice cracked.

“I asked you a question.””

She looked away.

That was when I knew.

Whatever was coming…

it was worse than I imagined.

Grandma took the letter.

“Your mother discovered something before she died.””

Dad shook his head.

“She would have told me.””

Grandma looked at him sadly.

“She tried.””

The words hit him.

“She tried several times.””

I looked at Grandma.

“Why didn’t she?””

“Because she was afraid.””

“Of what?””

Grandma looked at Vanessa.

“Of what Vanessa would do.””

Vanessa suddenly snapped.

“This is insane.””

Her voice rose.

“You’re all sitting here believing a dead woman over me.””

Grandma’s expression didn’t change.

“No.””

She held up the letter.

“We are believing evidence.””

Dad walked away.

He ran a hand through his hair.

“I don’t understand.””

Grandma softened.

“Your wife found out Vanessa had been hiding things from the family.””

Dad looked at Vanessa.

“Like what?””

Vanessa said nothing.

“Like what?”” he repeated.

Finally, she spoke.

“You’re acting like I committed some terrible crime.””

Dad stared at her.

“You forged documents.””

She looked away.

“That was complicated.””

“You lied.””

Silence.

“You destroyed Sarah’s things.””

“I was trying to move forward!””

The sudden shout shocked everyone.

Vanessa’s face twisted.

“I was trying to build a life with you!””

Dad looked at her.

“By erasing my first wife?””

Her eyes filled with anger.

“She was everywhere!””

The words came out before she could stop them.

The room froze.

Vanessa realized what she had admitted.

But she continued.

“Every room. Every picture. Every memory. I was supposed to be your wife, but I felt like I was living in her shadow.””

I stared at her.

So that was it.

It was never about decorations.

It was never about space.

It was jealousy.

A need to destroy anything she couldn’t replace.

Grandma spoke quietly.

“You hated that Sarah was loved.””

Vanessa looked at her.

“I wanted my own family.””

“You had one.””

“No.””

She looked at me.

“I had her daughter.””

My chest tightened.

“You mean me?””

Vanessa laughed bitterly.

“You were a constant reminder.””

Dad looked disgusted.

“Vanessa.””

But she didn’t stop.

“I tried, okay? I tried to accept it. But every time Emily talked about Sarah, every time she wore one of her sweaters, every time she put up those stupid decorations…”

She pointed at the destroyed tree.

“I felt like I disappeared.””

Nobody said anything.

Because for the first time, Vanessa wasn’t pretending.

She was finally showing who she was.

Then Grandma picked up the letter again.

“There is still one thing we haven’t addressed.””

Dad looked at her.

“The child.””

Vanessa immediately shook her head.

“No.””

Dad turned.

“No what?””

She looked terrified.

Grandma reached into the box and removed another envelope.

“This is why Sarah kept the recording.””

I felt my heartbeat in my ears.

“What is it?””

Grandma looked at Dad.

“You deserve to know the truth about your marriage.””

Dad opened the envelope himself.

Inside was a DNA test.

The room went completely silent.

He looked at the results.

Then at Vanessa.

His face collapsed.

“No…”

I looked at him.

“Dad?””

He didn’t answer.

He couldn’t.

Because the paper in his hand had just destroyed the life he thought he knew.

Vanessa whispered:

“Richard, please.””

He looked up.

“Please what?””

Tears filled her eyes.

“I was going to tell you.””

Grandma shook her head.

“No, you weren’t.””

Dad looked at the test again.

Then he said the words that made my entire world shift.

“Ethan isn’t my son.””

The name meant nothing to me at first.

Then I remembered.

Ethan.

Vanessa’s son.

The child she always said was “the only thing she had left.””

The child my father raised.

The child he loved.

My father sank into the chair.

And I realized something.

The Christmas tree wasn’t the beginning of the nightmare.

It was the moment the truth finally came out.

But there was still one question nobody had answered.

If Vanessa had been hiding this secret for years…

May you like

Who was Ethan’s real father?

And why had my mother been the one to discover it?
