Chapter 11: The Sister I Never Knew

Nobody spoke after Michael’s words.

“She’s closer than you think.””

The sentence followed me around the room like a ghost.

I looked at Vanessa.

“You found her?””

She didn’t respond.

That was enough.

Dad stepped forward.

“Vanessa.””

She looked at him.

“What?””

“Where is Olivia?””

Vanessa laughed softly.

But there was no humor in it.

“You all think I’m the villain.””

Grandma stared at her.

“You destroyed a family to hide a child.””

Vanessa’s face tightened.

“You don’t know what it was like.””

I stepped forward.

“No.””

My voice shook.

“You don’t get to say that.””

She looked at me.

“You have no idea what it feels like to spend years building something and realizing someone else could take it away.””

I stared at her.

“She wasn’t taking anything.””

“She would have.””

“Why?””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

Because the truth was obvious.

She was afraid.

Afraid that another person connected to my mother would exist.

Afraid she could never replace her.

Dad’s voice was quiet.

“Where is she?””

Vanessa looked away.

“I don’t know.””

Michael immediately said:

“That’s a lie.””

Everyone looked at him.

Vanessa glared.

“You’re the one who told me to handle it.””

Michael shook his head.

“No. I told you to delay it.””

My stomach turned.

“You both knew.””

Michael didn’t deny it.

“Yes.””

The honesty was horrifying.

My entire life had been surrounded by people keeping secrets.

My mother had been fighting alone.

And I never knew.

“Tell me,” I said.

Michael looked at me.

“Tell me where my sister is.””

He hesitated.

Then he reached into his pocket and pulled out a photograph.

He placed it on the table.

A young woman.

Maybe around my age.

Dark hair.

A familiar smile.

My breath caught.

Because she looked like my mother.

Not exactly.

But enough.

“That’s Olivia,” Michael said.

I picked up the picture.

“When was this taken?””

“Six months ago.””

I looked at him.

“You’ve seen her?””

“Yes.””

“Where?””

Michael hesitated.

Then said:

“Chicago.””

My heart raced.

“She lives in Chicago?””

“She did.””

The word bothered me.

“Did?””

Michael looked away.

“She moved.””

“Where?””

Nobody answered.

Then Grandma noticed something.

The back of the photograph.

She turned it over.

There was an address written there.

My eyes widened.

“You have her address.””

Michael was silent.

“You have her address.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

His answer was quiet.

“Because Sarah asked me to find her.””

That surprised everyone.

My father looked at him.

“You helped Sarah?””

Michael looked ashamed.

“For a while.””

The room became still.

Then he continued.

“I didn’t start this because I hated Sarah.””

Nobody responded.

“I started because I was desperate.””

Grandma looked at him.

“That doesn’t excuse anything.””

“I know.””

For the first time, Michael looked human.

Not like the confident man who walked in.

Just broken.

“I owed money.””

Dad stared.

“And you used my family.””

Michael nodded.

“Yes.””

The honesty hurt.

“But Sarah found out before I could finish anything.””

I looked at him.

“So she knew?””

“She knew about the money. She knew about Vanessa. She knew about the documents.””

He paused.

“She also knew about Olivia.””

I held the photograph tighter.

“Did she ever meet her?””

Michael shook his head.

“No.””

My chest hurt.

My mother spent years searching for a daughter she never got to hold.

Then Vanessa tried to erase her.

I looked at Vanessa.

“How could you?””

She looked at me.

For a moment, I thought she would apologize.

Instead, she said:

“Because I was afraid.””

That was all.

Not sorry.

Afraid.

Dad looked devastated.

“You destroyed people because you were afraid.””

She whispered:

“I thought if Olivia came back, I would lose everything.””

Dad shook his head.

“You already did.””

A sound came from outside.

A car door closing.

Everyone froze.

Grandma looked toward the window.

“Who is that?””

Nobody answered.

Then the doorbell rang.

Once.

Twice.

Dad looked at me.

My heart was pounding.

No one should have known we were here.

No one except…

The door opened before anyone reached it.

A woman stood there.

She looked around thirty.

Her eyes moved across the room.

The broken tree.

The papers.

The people.

Then her eyes landed on me.

And she stopped.

I stopped too.

Because even though I had never met her…

I knew exactly who she was.

She whispered:

“Emily?””

My entire body went still.

The woman looked like she had been crying.

“I’m sorry.””

Her voice trembled.

“I didn’t know if I should come.””

Grandma covered her mouth.

“Oh my God.””

The woman looked at her.

“Grandma Evelyn?””

That was impossible.

She knew Grandma.

She knew us.

My father stepped forward slowly.

“Who are you?””

The woman looked at him.

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I think…”

She swallowed.

“I think I’m your daughter.””

Nobody moved.

Then she looked at me.

May you like

And whispered the words I had spent my whole life never expecting to hear.

“I’m Olivia.””
