Chapter 13: The Secret Behind My Mother’s Death
The message stayed on Olivia’s phone screen.
One sentence.
One warning.
Your mother died protecting a secret you still don’t understand.
I read it again.
Then again.
Each time, the words felt heavier.
My mother.
A secret.
Her death.
Three things that had been connected from the beginning.
But somehow, we still didn’t have the whole truth.
“Who sent that?”” Dad asked.
Olivia took the phone back.
“I don’t know.””
Her hands were shaking.
Grandma immediately stood.
“Show me.””
Olivia handed her the phone.
Grandma studied the number.
Then her expression changed.
“You know it?””
Everyone noticed.
“Mom?”” Dad asked.
Grandma didn’t answer.
She looked at me.
Then Olivia.
Then the broken Christmas tree.
“I was hoping we would never have to open this part.””
My stomach tightened.
“What part?””
Grandma walked back to the table.
The room had already revealed so many secrets that night.
But somehow, I knew this one was different.
“This is the reason Sarah was afraid.””
Dad looked confused.
“Afraid of what?””
Grandma sat down slowly.
“Not Vanessa.””
“Not Michael.””
She looked at the phone.
“Someone above them.””
The words made the room colder.
Michael, who had been standing near the wall, suddenly spoke.
“I knew there was someone else.””
Everyone turned.
Dad stared at him.
“You knew?””
Michael looked ashamed.
“I never knew who.””
“You helped them.””
“Yes.””
His voice was quiet.
“But I wasn’t the person controlling everything.””
Grandma nodded.
“Your mother discovered that too.””
I looked at her.
“What did she discover?””
Grandma opened the final folder from the box.
The one nobody had touched.
The one my mother had hidden beneath everything else.
Inside was a series of documents.
Emails.
Photos.
And a name.
I saw it before anyone said it.
Dr. Samuel Hayes.
My heart stopped.
“Who is he?””
Grandma looked at Dad.
“He was your mother’s doctor.””
Dad frowned.
“My mother’s?””
“No.””
Grandma shook her head.
“Sarah’s.””
My fingers went cold.
“My mom’s doctor?””
Grandma nodded.
“He was the person responsible for overseeing her treatment.””
Dad looked confused.
“What does he have to do with this?””
Grandma placed the documents down.
“Sarah believed someone was manipulating her medical records.””
Silence.
I stared.
“What?””
“She noticed inconsistencies.””
Grandma continued.
“Appointments she never made. Medication changes she never approved. Notes written in her file that she never said.””
Dad looked horrified.
“Are you saying someone was making her look unstable?””
“Yes.””
My chest tightened.
Because suddenly everything connected.
The comments.
The accusations.
The way Vanessa told everyone my mother was becoming confused.
The way people questioned her memory.
“She was trying to prove it,” Grandma said.
“Your mother knew if people believed she was sick and confused, nobody would listen to her.””
Olivia looked at the papers.
“Who helped Dr. Hayes?””
Nobody answered.
Then Michael spoke.
“Vanessa.””
Everyone turned.
He swallowed.
“She introduced us.””
Dad looked at Vanessa.
“Is that true?””
Vanessa didn’t respond.
That was enough.
My father looked devastated.
“How many people were involved?””
Grandma looked at the documents.
“More than we thought.””
I picked up one page.
There was a list.
Names.
Payments.
Dates.
And one final entry.
A company.
I recognized it.
“Wait.””
Everyone looked at me.
“This company…”
My voice shook.
“Dad, isn’t this the company that handles your family trust?””
Dad looked.
Then froze.
“No.””
Grandma looked at him.
“What?””
Dad grabbed the paper.
“That’s impossible.””
“Why?””
“Because only family members have access to those accounts.””
The room went silent.
Family members.
I looked around.
My father.
My grandmother.
Me.
Olivia.
Michael.
And Vanessa.
Then the front door suddenly opened.
Everyone turned.
A man stood there.
Older.
Gray hair.
Expensive suit.
Calm expression.
The same kind of confidence Michael had.
Except worse.
Because he looked like someone who had never been questioned in his life.
Dad whispered:
“Uncle Robert?””
My heart stopped.
Another family member.
Another secret.
Robert smiled slightly.
“I was wondering how long it would take.””
Grandma stood immediately.
“You.””
Robert looked at her.
“Still protecting Sarah’s children, Evelyn?””
Dad stepped forward.
“What are you doing here?””
Robert looked around the room.
At the papers.
At Olivia.
At me.
Then smiled.
“The truth finally came out.””
Nobody moved.
“You knew?””
Robert sighed.
“Of course.””
Dad looked betrayed.
“How?””
Robert walked slowly into the room.
“Because I was the one Sarah was investigating.””
The silence was unbearable.
I felt Olivia grab my hand.
A stranger yesterday.
My sister today.
And now we were standing together in the middle of a family secret that had lasted decades.
Robert looked at the Christmas tree.
Then at the broken silver star.
“Sarah always loved that tree.””
Grandma’s eyes narrowed.
“How do you know?””
Robert smiled.
“Because I helped her hide the truth inside it.””
My breath stopped.
“What?””
He looked directly at me.
“Your mother knew she was running out of time.””
He stepped closer.
“And she knew someone would come looking for what she left behind.””
My voice shook.
“Who?””
Robert smiled.
“The person she trusted most.””
I looked around.
Grandma.
Dad.
Olivia.
Then Robert said:
“It was never Vanessa.””
May you like
A pause.
“It was you, Emily.””
