Chapter 2: The Call That Changed the Lobby
For several seconds, Daniel Reed didn't move.
He looked at the security officer, then at Emily.
Finally, he forced a smile.
"That must be some misunderstanding.""
The officer shook his head.
"I don't think so, sir.""
Vanessa adjusted the strap of her handbag.
"Why is everyone acting so strangely?""
Daniel ignored her.
"Who exactly is arriving?""
The officer lowered his voice.
"Mr. Carter's security director called. They're bringing the chairman directly to the hotel.""
Vanessa's expression changed.
"Which chairman?""
The officer hesitated.
"Mr. Richard Carter.""
Vanessa blinked.
Then she laughed.
"Richard Carter?""
Daniel turned toward her.
"Mrs. Whitmore, please.""
"What?""
"Not now.""
Vanessa looked offended.
"Don't tell me you believe that little girl is somehow connected to Richard Carter.""
Emily stood quietly beside the reception desk.
She hadn't heard the officer's entire conversation.
She was more concerned with Noah, whose tiny fingers had curled around the edge of her blouse.
She kissed his forehead.
"Almost there, sweetheart.""
A receptionist named Lily approached with a glass of water.
"Miss, would you like something to drink?""
Emily looked up, surprised by the kindness.
"Thank you. That's very sweet.""
Lily glanced at Emily's cheek.
"Are you sure you're okay?""
Emily gave a small nod.
"I'll be fine.""
Lily looked toward Daniel.
Then she lowered her voice.
"I'm sorry about what happened.""
Emily managed a faint smile.
"Thank you.""
Vanessa noticed the exchange.
"Excuse me!""
Lily turned.
"Yes, ma'am?""
"Are you supposed to be serving water to people who have been asked to leave?""
Lily froze.
Daniel stepped forward.
"Lily, please return to your station.""
"But Mr. Reed—"
"Now.""
Lily reluctantly walked away.
Vanessa smiled.
"That's better.""
Emily looked at her.
"Why do you keep doing that?""
Vanessa tilted her head.
"Doing what?""
"Treating people like they're beneath you.""
Vanessa laughed.
"Because some people need to understand their place.""
Emily took a slow breath.
"My father taught me that the way you treat someone who cannot do anything for you says more about you than anything you own.""
Vanessa's smile faded.
"Your father sounds like a very ordinary man.""
"He isn't.""
"Really? Then where is he?""
Emily looked toward the entrance.
"On his way.""
Vanessa rolled her eyes.
"Of course he is.""
Daniel moved between the two women.
"Mrs. Whitmore, perhaps we should move to the lounge while security handles this.""
"Why?""
"To avoid further embarrassment.""
Vanessa gave Emily one last look.
"Enjoy your final few minutes here.""
She turned and walked toward the lounge, her heels clicking against the marble.
Daniel followed.
But before he reached the seating area, his phone vibrated.
He glanced at the screen.
A message from the hotel's regional operations director appeared.
*URGENT: The chairman is personally visiting the Grand Meridian. Ensure the lobby is prepared. Do not allow any disruption.*
Daniel immediately straightened his jacket.
He looked toward the entrance.
His mind began racing.
Richard Carter was not an ordinary businessman.
He was the founder and majority owner of Carter Hospitality Group, an international company with luxury hotels, resorts, restaurants, and commercial properties across the United States and Europe.
The Grand Meridian was one of the company's flagship properties.
Daniel had worked there for seven years.
He had never met the chairman personally.
But he knew enough to understand that making a bad impression could destroy a career.
He hurried toward the reception desk.
"Everyone, listen carefully. The chairman is coming. I want the lobby spotless, the entrance clear, and no unnecessary conversations.""
The employees immediately began moving.
A concierge straightened the brochures.
A receptionist checked the reservation screen.
The pianist switched to a softer piece.
Vanessa watched with interest.
"Daniel, is this really such a big deal?""
He nodded.
"Very much so.""
"Perhaps you should tell him about the woman causing trouble.""
Daniel looked at Emily.
"That won't be necessary.""
Vanessa frowned.
"Why not?""
"Because I don't want a disturbance during his visit.""
Vanessa smiled.
"Well, I certainly hope he knows how to recognize proper guests.""
She glanced at Emily's sneakers.
"Some people seem to think a phone call makes them important.""
Emily didn't respond.
Instead, she sat down carefully on a nearby sofa, making sure Noah's head was supported.
She had driven through heavy rain to get here.
Her back ached.
Her cheek still burned.
And she hadn't eaten breakfast.
But the thought of her father arriving was enough to keep her calm.
She remembered being eight years old, standing outside a school auditorium after a dance recital.
She had forgotten her costume shoes and felt embarrassed when the other girls laughed.
Her father had arrived late from a business meeting.
He had walked straight into the auditorium wearing an expensive suit, carrying a pair of pink ballet slippers.
He had knelt in front of her.
"Never let someone make you feel small because you don't have what they have," he'd told her.
Emily had never forgotten those words.
Her father had never taught her to measure people by their money.
He had taught her to measure them by their hearts.
A few minutes later, Daniel approached again.
"Miss Carter.""
Emily looked up.
"Yes?""
"I need you to move away from the reception area.""
"Why?""
"The chairman will be arriving.""
"I understand.""
"Then please wait outside.""
Emily stared at him.
"You still want me to leave?""
Daniel lowered his voice.
"Look, I don't know who you called, but this is a very important business visit. I cannot have you sitting here with a baby while the chairman arrives.""
Emily's expression hardened.
"My father asked me to wait here.""
Daniel sighed.
"Your father can meet you outside.""
Vanessa, who had been listening, walked over.
"Daniel, why are you wasting your time?""
She looked down at Emily.
"Perhaps we should ask security to escort her out.""
Emily gently adjusted Noah.
"Please stop.""
Vanessa leaned closer.
"Or what?""
Emily's voice trembled, but she held her ground.
"Or you'll have to explain to my father why you hit a woman holding his grandson.""
Vanessa froze for half a second.
Then she laughed.
"His grandson?""
She turned to Daniel.
"Did you hear that?""
Daniel didn't laugh.
He was looking at his phone again.
A second message had arrived.
*The chairman is approaching the main entrance. He will be accompanied by the executive board and head of security.*
Daniel swallowed.
He quickly walked toward the entrance.
Through the glass doors, several black luxury vehicles were pulling up to the curb.
Security personnel stepped out first.
Then a man in a charcoal overcoat emerged from the rear passenger seat.
He was in his late fifties, tall, broad-shouldered, with silver hair and a commanding presence.
His name was Richard Carter.
He had built his company from a small family-owned hotel into a global hospitality empire.
Business magazines called him one of the most disciplined executives in the industry.
His employees called him demanding.
His family called him Dad.
And to Emily, he was the one person who had never made her feel she needed to prove her worth.
Richard adjusted his cufflinks and walked toward the entrance.
His executive assistant, Thomas Blake, followed closely.
"Sir," Thomas said, "the board members are already upstairs. We can go directly to the private meeting room.""
Richard shook his head.
"Not yet.""
"Is there something else?""
"My daughter is waiting downstairs.""
Thomas smiled.
"Of course. How is the little one?""
Richard's expression softened.
"I haven't held my grandson in six weeks. I intend to correct that today.""
They entered the lobby.
Daniel hurried forward.
"Good morning, Mr. Carter. Welcome to the Grand Meridian. It's an honor to have you here.""
Richard gave a brief nod.
"Good morning, Daniel.""
Daniel looked stunned that the chairman knew his name.
"Everything has been prepared for your visit, sir.""
"Thank you.""
Richard glanced around the lobby.
Then he noticed the reception desk.
And beyond it, the beige blouse.
The dark jeans.
The familiar face.
Emily.
His expression changed instantly.
"Emily?""
She stood up carefully.
"Dad.""
Richard walked toward her.
He didn't look at Daniel.
He didn't look at Vanessa.
He didn't look at the expensive decorations or the employees waiting for instructions.
He looked only at his daughter.
Then he noticed her cheek.
A red mark was spreading across her skin.
His smile disappeared.
He reached out and gently touched her face.
"Sweetheart, what happened?""
Emily tried to smile.
"Nothing. I'm okay.""
Richard looked at the mark again.
"That is not nothing.""
She glanced toward Vanessa.
"She slapped me.""
Richard slowly turned.
"Who?""
Emily pointed.
Vanessa was standing near the lounge.
Her handbag slipped slightly from her shoulder.
Richard looked directly at her.
Then he looked at Daniel.
"Someone had better explain to me why my daughter is standing here with a bruised face and a newborn baby while my hotel manager is asking her to leave.""
Daniel's mouth opened.
Nothing came out.
Vanessa quickly recovered.
"Mr. Carter, I'm sure there's been a misunderstanding.""
Richard didn't answer her.
He lifted Noah gently from Emily's arms after she nodded.
The baby stirred, then settled against his grandfather's chest.
Richard smiled down at him.
"Hello, little man. Grandpa's here.""
Emily's eyes filled with tears.
For a moment, the lobby seemed to disappear.
But the moment didn't last.
Richard turned back toward the manager.
"Daniel.""
"Yes, sir?""
"Did you witness what happened to my daughter?""
Daniel swallowed.
"Sir, I was attempting to resolve a disagreement between two guests.""
Richard's voice became colder.
"That wasn't my question.""
Daniel glanced at Vanessa.
She gave him a tiny shake of her head.
Then he looked back at the chairman.
"Mrs. Whitmore reported that your daughter had caused a disturbance.""
Richard stared at him.
"And did you investigate her complaint?""
Daniel hesitated.
"Well...""
Richard took one step closer.
"Or did you simply decide that the woman in the expensive dress was telling the truth and the mother holding a baby was lying?""
Nobody spoke.
Then Vanessa interrupted.
"Mr. Carter, I really don't think you understand who I am.""
Richard finally looked at her.
His expression was unreadable.
"Then perhaps you should introduce yourself.""
Vanessa lifted her chin.
"Vanessa Whitmore. My husband is Jonathan Whitmore. He's a significant investor in several luxury developments.""
Richard stared at her for a moment.
Then he asked a question that made Daniel turn pale.
"Jonathan Whitmore?""
"Yes.""
Richard handed Noah back to Emily.
Then he looked at Thomas, his executive assistant.
"Thomas, call legal.""
Vanessa frowned.
"Why?""
May you like
Richard's answer was quiet.
"Because I believe your husband has been lying to my company.""
