Chapter 8: The Woman Who Knew Everything
Richard immediately called the number back.
It went straight to voicemail.
He tried again.
Nothing.
"Thomas," he said, turning toward the security officers.
"Where is Blake?""
"Security office, sir.""
"Make sure he stays there. No calls, no visitors, and no access to company devices.""
"Understood.""
Richard turned toward Eleanor.
"Mother, what did Alexander mean?""
Eleanor looked at him.
"I don't know.""
"Don't lie to me.""
"I am not lying.""
"He said you were protecting the wrong person.""
Eleanor slowly sat down.
For the first time that afternoon, she looked old.
Not wealthy.
Not powerful.
Just tired.
Emily approached her.
"Grandmother, what happened twenty-seven years ago?""
Eleanor looked at Noah.
Then she began speaking.
"Your grandfather, William Carter, had two sons. Alexander was intelligent, stubborn, and deeply protective of the family. Richard was younger, quieter, and more interested in building relationships than fighting over money.""
Richard gave a bitter laugh.
"That sounds familiar.""
Eleanor continued.
"When Alexander discovered that his father was transferring family assets into private accounts, he confronted him. Your grandfather threatened to disinherit him.""
"What happened next?"" Emily asked.
"Alexander left the estate. A few weeks later, we were told his boat had been found overturned near the coast.""
Richard frowned.
"Was there a body?""
"No.""
"Then why did we have a funeral?""
Eleanor's eyes filled.
"Because your father insisted.""
Richard stood.
"And you believed him?""
"I was twenty-nine years old, Richard. I had two children, a husband who controlled every account I owned, and a family that believed scandal was worse than murder.""
Emily lowered her eyes.
Eleanor reached toward her.
"I know that doesn't excuse my silence.""
Emily didn't respond.
Richard walked toward the windows.
"My whole life has been built on a lie.""
Eleanor nodded.
"Yes.""
"Why did you wait until now?""
"Because your father left instructions. I was not to reveal the truth until the original trust was threatened.""
Richard turned.
"And who threatened it?""
Eleanor looked at him.
"Thomas Blake.""
Richard shook his head.
"Thomas was only twenty-three when he joined my company.""
"Exactly.""
Eleanor opened the black box again.
She removed a photograph of a young man standing beside William Carter.
Thomas Blake.
He looked younger, but unmistakable.
Emily stared.
"How did he know my grandfather?""
Eleanor answered.
"Thomas was the son of your grandfather's personal accountant.""
Richard frowned.
"I never knew that.""
"Your father employed Thomas's father for years. When the accountant died, William promised to take care of his family.""
Eleanor paused.
"But Thomas believed the Carter family had taken everything from him.""
Richard examined the photograph.
"That doesn't explain why he would try to steal Noah's inheritance.""
Eleanor's voice dropped.
"Because his father was involved in the original missing-share arrangement.""
Daniel suddenly leaned forward.
"I think I understand.""
Everyone turned.
He opened his bag and removed a small notebook.
"During the audit, I found a series of transfers from an old account. They were dated twenty-seven years ago.""
Richard looked at him.
"Why didn't you mention this earlier?""
"Because I didn't know the account belonged to Thomas's father.""
Daniel flipped through the notebook.
"There were three beneficiaries listed. William Carter, Alexander Carter, and a company called Blackridge Holdings.""
Jonathan looked up sharply.
"Blackridge Holdings?""
Daniel nodded.
"Not Blackridge Solutions. A different company, but the same original registration address.""
Richard took the notebook.
"Who owned it?""
Daniel pointed to a name.
"Thomas's father.""
Eleanor closed her eyes.
"I knew it.""
Richard looked at her.
"Mother, what aren't you telling us?""
She didn't answer.
Emily moved Noah into the crook of her arm.
"Grandmother, please. We need the whole truth.""
Eleanor looked at her for a long moment.
Then she spoke.
"William didn't simply hide Alexander's inheritance. He stole it.""
Richard frowned.
"What?""
"Alexander was the rightful majority beneficiary of the original family estate. Your father transferred those shares into a private holding company and used Thomas's father to hide the ownership records.""
Richard stared at her.
"Why?""
"Because Alexander wanted to sell part of the company and use the money to establish independent hotels for families who had lost their homes.""
Emily blinked.
"He wanted to help people?""
Eleanor nodded.
"Your grandfather believed that would destroy the family legacy.""
Richard looked away.
"My father spent his entire life teaching me that the Carter name meant integrity.""
Eleanor's voice broke.
"He wanted you to inherit his reputation, not his mistakes.""
Daniel looked at the notebook.
"Then Thomas was trying to recover the original shares for himself.""
"Not exactly," Eleanor replied.
She reached for another document.
"Thomas believes his father was cheated out of his rightful compensation. He thinks the missing shares belong to him.""
Richard shook his head.
"Even if that's true, he had no right to forge my signature or threaten my family.""
"No," Eleanor agreed.
"He didn't.""
Emily looked at the photograph again.
"Then where does Alexander fit into all this?""
Eleanor's eyes moved toward the window.
"Alexander was never interested in the money. He wanted the truth exposed.""
Richard sat down.
"And now he's back.""
A knock interrupted them.
Thomas's replacement security officer entered.
"Mr. Carter, we have a problem.""
Richard stood.
"What?""
"The security team reports that the vehicle assigned to Mrs. Carter has been moved.""
Richard turned toward Eleanor.
"Your vehicle?""
She nodded.
"Yes.""
"Who moved it?""
"We don't know, sir. The driver says he received instructions from the executive office.""
Richard's face hardened.
"Whose instructions?""
The officer looked at his phone.
"Mr. Blake's.""
Richard immediately called the security office.
"Put Thomas on the phone.""
A moment later, the officer answered.
"Sir, Mr. Blake is no longer here.""
Richard froze.
"What?""
"He was in the security room. The officer stepped out to retrieve the access logs. When he returned, Mr. Blake had disappeared.""
Richard slammed his hand against the table.
"How?""
"We're reviewing the cameras now.""
Richard turned toward Daniel.
"Where did he go?""
Daniel looked at the documents.
"I don't know.""
Then his phone vibrated.
He checked the screen.
A message had arrived from an unknown number.
He read it.
His expression changed.
Emily noticed.
"What is it?""
Daniel hesitated.
"Someone sent me a photograph.""
"Of what?""
He turned the phone around.
It showed the old Carter estate.
A man stood in front of the main entrance.
His face was partially hidden by a scarf.
But Emily immediately recognized the building.
Beneath the photograph was a message.
*COME ALONE IF YOU WANT TO SEE YOUR BROTHER AGAIN.*
Richard grabbed the phone.
"Alexander?""
Daniel nodded.
A second message arrived.
*AND BRING THE ORIGINAL BIRTH CERTIFICATE.*
Richard looked toward Eleanor.
"Why would he need that?""
Eleanor's expression changed.
"Because the birth certificate is the key to proving his identity.""
Richard frowned.
"He's my brother. I know who he is.""
Eleanor shook her head.
"Not legally. Your father registered Alexander's death under a different name. Without the original birth record, he cannot reclaim the missing shares.""
Richard looked down at the documents.
Then he noticed something.
The birth certificate inside the black box wasn't Alexander's.
It was his own.
He turned toward Eleanor.
"Where is Alexander's?""
Eleanor slowly closed the box.
"I gave it to the person who was supposed to protect it.""
Daniel stared at her.
"Who?""
Eleanor looked at Emily.
"Your son.""
Emily stepped back.
"What?""
Eleanor nodded.
"Your grandfather instructed me to place the original birth record inside the newborn's trust archive. It was meant to remain hidden until the family was ready to reveal the truth.""
Richard looked confused.
"Then how did Alexander know about it?""
Eleanor's face went pale.
"Because someone must have told him.""
Emily looked toward the door.
"Who had access to the archive?""
Eleanor didn't answer.
Daniel suddenly stood.
"Thomas.""
Richard looked at him.
"Thomas doesn't have the original record.""
Daniel shook his head.
"He had access to the digital inventory. He could have found its location.""
Jonathan slowly rose.
"Then Alexander isn't asking for the birth certificate to reclaim the shares.""
Everyone turned toward him.
Jonathan looked terrified.
"He's asking for it because he wants to prove something else.""
Richard stepped closer.
"What?""
Jonathan swallowed.
"That the man claiming to be Alexander Carter isn't Alexander at all.""
The room went silent.
Emily looked at Eleanor.
"Grandmother?""
Eleanor didn't answer.
She was staring at the photograph on Daniel's phone.
Her hands began to tremble.
Then she whispered:
"Dear God.""
Richard grabbed her arm.
"What?""
Eleanor looked up.
"The man in that photograph...""
She struggled to finish.
"That's not Alexander.""
Emily felt Noah move against her chest.
"Then who is it?""
May you like
Eleanor closed her eyes.
"That's the man who helped your grandfather fake Alexander's death.""
