Chapter 6: The Name on the Birth Certificate

Richard stood completely still.

"What did you just say?""

Thomas Blake placed his folder on the table.

He didn't look nervous.

That was what frightened Richard most.

For eleven years, Thomas had been the person Richard trusted to handle confidential documents, private investments, and sensitive family matters.

He had access to almost everything.

And now he was standing in a conference room, looking at Emily's newborn son as though the baby were the missing piece of a puzzle.

Thomas adjusted his tie.

"Mr. Carter, I think it's time you understood what Daniel Morgan was really investigating.""

Richard stepped closer.

"Start talking.""

Thomas opened the folder.

Inside were several documents bearing the Carter Hospitality Group logo.

"Eight months ago, your father established a private trust for the next generation of the Carter family.""

Emily frowned.

"My grandfather?""

Richard nodded slowly.

"Yes. My father passed away three years ago, but he had created several family trusts before his death.""

Thomas continued.

"The largest of those trusts contains shares in the hospitality group, property holdings, and investment accounts.""

Richard's expression tightened.

"I know what's in my family's trusts.""

"Not all of it, sir.""

Thomas removed a document.

"Your father's final amendment was never publicly disclosed.""

Richard took the paper.

His eyes moved across the page.

Then he stopped.

"That's impossible.""

Emily looked at him.

"Dad?""

Richard didn't answer.

Thomas leaned forward.

"The amendment established a beneficiary arrangement for your first grandchild.""

Emily looked down at Noah.

"What?""

Thomas nodded.

"Under the terms of the amendment, your first grandchild receives a controlling interest in a separate family investment trust.""

Emily blinked.

"How much?""

Thomas answered without hesitation.

"Twenty-two percent of Carter Hospitality Group's voting shares, along with several privately held properties.""

Emily stared at him.

"You're saying my baby owns part of the company?""

Richard slowly lowered the document.

"Not exactly. The trust owns the shares. Noah is the beneficiary.""

Thomas nodded.

"Correct.""

Vanessa suddenly laughed.

"That's ridiculous. A six-week-old baby?""

Thomas looked at her.

"His age is irrelevant.""

Jonathan leaned back in his chair.

"So that's why you were interested in Daniel's investigation.""

Thomas nodded.

"Daniel discovered the trust amendment before it was officially registered. He also discovered that someone was attempting to transfer several assets out of the trust.""

Richard's face hardened.

"Who?""

Thomas looked at Vanessa.

Then at Jonathan.

"Whitmore Capital was being used as an intermediary.""

Jonathan stood.

"Wait. I never agreed to that.""

Thomas turned toward him.

"You signed the investment agreements.""

"Because you told me they were legitimate.""

"And you accepted the money.""

Jonathan looked stunned.

Vanessa interrupted.

"Jonathan, stop talking!""

He turned toward her.

"How long have you known?""

She looked away.

Thomas continued.

"The original plan was to redirect the shares before the beneficiary reached the age at which the trust arrangement could be fully activated.""

Richard shook his head.

"Why would you do that?""

Thomas answered calmly.

"Because the person controlling those shares would eventually have enormous influence over the company.""

Richard stared at him.

"That's my grandson.""

"Exactly.""

Emily held Noah closer.

She was beginning to understand why Daniel had been so frightened.

This wasn't simply a financial disagreement.

Someone had been trying to steal her son's future.

Richard placed the document on the table.

"Who authorized the attempted transfer?""

Thomas hesitated.

Then he looked at Richard.

"You did.""

The words landed like a bomb.

Emily's eyes widened.

Richard slowly turned toward him.

"Excuse me?""

Thomas removed another document.

"Your electronic authorization was attached to the transfer request.""

Richard examined the signature.

It looked authentic.

His name.

His authorization code.

His digital signature.

But Richard knew he hadn't approved it.

"This is forged.""

Thomas gave a small shrug.

"That's what you would say.""

Richard's voice became colder.

"I did not authorize this transfer.""

"Then perhaps your memory is failing.""

The room went silent.

Emily stood.

"Don't speak to my father like that.""

Thomas glanced at her.

"With all due respect, Emily, this is a corporate matter.""

"You're talking about stealing from my baby.""

Thomas's expression didn't change.

"I'm talking about a legal trust arrangement.""

Emily looked at the papers.

Then she looked at Daniel.

"Is this why they were following you?""

Daniel nodded.

"I found the original amendment. I copied the records before they could destroy them.""

Thomas's expression tightened.

"Where are those records?""

Daniel shook his head.

"Somewhere safe.""

Thomas gave a humorless smile.

"You should have handed them over months ago.""

Daniel looked directly at him.

"You threatened my family.""

Thomas shrugged.

"I gave you a choice.""

"You told me Emily would be arrested if I spoke.""

"And you believed me.""

Daniel clenched his fists.

Richard stepped between them.

"Thomas, you are finished speaking to my family.""

Thomas looked at him.

"You're making a mistake.""

Richard reached for his phone.

"Security.""

Two officers entered immediately.

"Sir?""

"Take Mr. Blake's access badge and escort him to the security office. Preserve his company devices and notify legal counsel.""

Thomas laughed.

"You can't do that.""

Richard looked at him.

"I just did.""

The officers approached.

Thomas backed away.

"Richard, think carefully. You don't understand what you're risking.""

Richard's expression didn't change.

"I understand perfectly.""

Thomas turned toward Emily.

Then he looked at Noah.

And his next words made her blood run cold.

"That child was never supposed to be born into this arrangement.""

Emily stepped backward.

Richard immediately moved closer to her.

"What did you say?""

Thomas struggled against the security officer's grip.

"Ask Daniel what happened the night he disappeared.""

Daniel went pale.

Richard turned.

"Daniel?""

Daniel looked at Emily.

Then he looked at Noah.

"I didn't tell you everything.""

Emily felt her stomach tighten.

"What else?""

Daniel took a long breath.

"Before I disappeared, I received a copy of the original trust amendment. But there was something else inside the file.""

"What?""

"Your grandfather left a personal letter.""

Richard frowned.

"My father?""

Daniel nodded.

"He specifically mentioned Noah.""

Emily looked down at her baby.

"Why?""

Daniel's voice trembled.

"Because your grandfather knew someone might try to steal the trust.""

Richard looked stunned.

"How could he have known?""

Daniel removed a folded envelope from his jacket.

The paper was old, with a handwritten name across the front.

EMILY.

She recognized the handwriting from the family Christmas cards her grandfather used to send.

Her fingers trembled as she took it.

"Where did you get this?""

"From the original trust archive.""

Richard watched her carefully.

"Open it.""

Emily unfolded the letter.

Inside was a single page.

My dearest Emily,

If you are reading this, then the family has finally welcomed the child I have waited so long to meet.

There are things about our family that your father has never told you. I wanted to explain them myself, but time did not allow it.

Your son is the first child born under a special condition established by our family trust. He is not merely an heir.

He is the person who can expose the truth about the missing shares.

Emily stopped reading.

She looked at Richard.

"What missing shares?""

Richard took the letter.

His eyes moved rapidly across the page.

At the bottom was a final paragraph.

There is one person in our family who knows where the original ownership records are hidden. Trust no one who tells you the matter has already been settled.

Richard's face drained of color.

Emily noticed a name written beneath the signature.

Her grandfather's final handwritten note.

*The person who holds the truth is Noah's legal guardian.*

She looked at her father.

"That's you, isn't it?""

Richard shook his head slowly.

"No.""

He turned the letter over.

There was another line written on the back.

I did not appoint my son Richard.

Richard stared at the words.

Emily's voice trembled.

"Then who?""

Nobody answered.

Daniel slowly looked toward the conference room door.

Jonathan followed his gaze.

Vanessa's face had gone completely white.

Because someone else was standing outside.

An elderly woman in a dark blue coat.

She entered without knocking.

Richard turned.

His breath caught.

"Mother?""

Emily stared at the woman.

She had seen photographs of her grandmother, Eleanor Carter, but had been told that the woman had been living abroad for years.

Eleanor walked toward the table.

She looked at Noah.

Then at Emily.

Finally, she turned to Richard.

"You should have told your daughter the truth a long time ago.""

Richard stood motionless.

"Mother, what are you doing here?""

Eleanor placed a small black box on the table.

"Correcting the mistake your father made.""

She opened the box.

Inside was an original birth certificate.

Not Noah's.

Richard's.

And beside it was another document bearing a name Emily had never heard before.

Eleanor looked directly at her.

"Emily, there's something you need to understand.""

She pointed to the document.

"Your father isn't the only person who can claim the Carter inheritance.""

Richard's voice cracked.

"Mother, don't.""

Eleanor ignored him.

Then she revealed the final secret.

"Your father has a brother.""

Emily stared.

Richard closed his eyes.

And Eleanor added:

May you like

"He's the person who legally owns the missing shares.""

*But according to the records, he died twenty-seven years ago.*
