Chapter 9: The Man Behind the Photograph

Richard immediately ordered the security team to lock down the hotel.

Nobody was to leave without authorization.

The executive elevators were disabled, the parking garage was placed under surveillance, and every vehicle connected to the Carter family was checked.

But Richard had one problem.

He didn't know who he could trust.

Thomas Blake had disappeared.

Jonathan Whitmore had admitted to participating in questionable transactions.

Vanessa had been collecting information about Emily.

And now Eleanor was claiming that the man in the photograph wasn't Alexander.

Richard turned toward his mother.

"Who is he?""

Eleanor looked at the photograph again.

"His name is Samuel Hayes.""

Daniel frowned.

"I've heard that name.""

Jonathan turned sharply.

"Samuel Hayes was your father's private attorney.""

Richard stared.

"Why would he be standing outside our family estate?""

Eleanor answered quietly.

"Because he was the person who arranged the false death certificate.""

Emily held Noah closer.

"Why would a lawyer do that?""

Eleanor looked at her.

"Because your grandfather paid him.""

Richard shook his head.

"Mother, you're telling me a lawyer helped fake my brother's death?""

"Yes.""

"Then why does this man want Alexander's birth certificate?""

Eleanor opened the black box again.

"Because Samuel knows the original trust cannot be transferred without proving Alexander's identity.""

Daniel leaned forward.

"Then why not simply produce the original birth record?""

Eleanor looked at him.

"Because Samuel's name appears on the document as a witness.""

Richard understood immediately.

"If Alexander is legally recognized as alive, Samuel could be investigated for fraud.""

"Exactly.""

Jonathan rubbed his forehead.

"That explains why Thomas was working with him.""

Emily looked at him.

"How do you know?""

Jonathan hesitated.

"Because I saw them together.""

Richard turned.

"When?""

"Three months ago. At a private meeting in New York.""

Vanessa stared at her husband.

"You never told me that.""

Jonathan looked at her.

"You told me not to ask questions.""

Vanessa's face tightened.

"Because you were making enough mistakes already.""

Richard stepped forward.

"Stop arguing. Tell me exactly what happened.""

Jonathan took a breath.

"Thomas introduced Samuel as a consultant. He said Samuel had historical documents connected to the Carter family estate. They wanted to use those documents to negotiate a private settlement.""

"With whom?""

"Me.""

Richard's expression darkened.

"Why would they negotiate with you?""

"Because Whitmore Capital had received the money from the redirected accounts.""

Emily looked at Jonathan.

"So you knew they were stealing from my son?""

Jonathan lowered his eyes.

"I suspected.""

"That isn't an answer.""

He looked at her.

"Yes. I knew something was wrong. I didn't know the full extent, but I knew enough to understand that the money wasn't clean.""

Emily shook her head.

"You let them use my son.""

Jonathan nodded.

"I did.""

Vanessa stood.

"Jonathan, stop confessing to things you don't understand.""

He turned toward her.

"You were the one who arranged the meeting with Samuel.""

Vanessa went still.

Richard looked at her.

"Is that true?""

She didn't answer.

Eleanor slowly stood.

"Vanessa, you knew about the original trust before Emily did.""

Vanessa's jaw tightened.

"I knew there were assets involved.""

"You also knew Daniel was investigating them.""

"I knew he was asking questions.""

"And you sent men to intimidate him.""

Vanessa looked toward Jonathan.

He stared at the floor.

Then she laughed.

"Fine. You want the truth? I did what I had to do.""

Emily's voice trembled.

"You threatened Daniel.""

Vanessa looked at her.

"Your boyfriend was about to destroy a very profitable business arrangement.""

"He was trying to protect his family.""

"His family?"" Vanessa scoffed.

"He was a junior employee who thought he could challenge people with real money.""

Emily stepped forward.

"People with real money?""

Vanessa pointed at Noah.

"Look at what all this has done. A baby who hasn't even learned to walk is suddenly being treated like a king because of an old document.""

Emily's face hardened.

"He's a baby. He doesn't know anything about your money.""

"Exactly! And yet everyone is prepared to destroy their lives for him.""

Richard moved between them.

"That's enough.""

Vanessa turned toward him.

"Do you really think your father wanted this? Do you think he wanted a child to control his company?""

Richard answered calmly.

"My father wanted the truth protected.""

Vanessa laughed.

"Your father was a dying old man who couldn't decide what to do with his own estate.""

Eleanor slapped her hand against the table.

"Don't you dare speak about William that way.""

Vanessa looked surprised.

Eleanor continued.

"Your husband signed documents he didn't understand. You manipulated people who trusted you. And when you discovered that a newborn child stood between you and the money you wanted, you chose to hurt his mother.""

Vanessa's expression turned cold.

"I didn't know she was his daughter.""

Richard stared at her.

"Would that have made it acceptable?""

Vanessa said nothing.

Emily looked down at Noah.

She could still feel the sting of the slap.

But now the humiliation was mixed with something worse.

She had been targeted before she even knew why.

Daniel approached her.

"Emily, there's something else.""

She turned.

"What?""

He removed a small flash drive from his pocket.

"I kept a backup of the original audit files.""

Richard took it.

"Why didn't you give me this earlier?""

"Because it contains a list of every person involved.""

Richard handed it to a security officer.

"Take this to our independent legal team. Do not connect it to the company network.""

The officer nodded.

Daniel continued.

"There's one more file.""

He opened his phone and showed Emily a photograph.

It was a picture of Daniel holding a small envelope.

Emily frowned.

"What's that?""

"The letter I tried to send you before I disappeared.""

She stared at the screen.

"Why do you have a photograph of it?""

"Because I took a picture before giving it to the courier.""

Emily looked confused.

"Who was the courier?""

Daniel swallowed.

"Thomas Blake.""

Richard's expression changed.

"He intercepted the letter?""

Daniel nodded.

"I believe so.""

Emily felt her eyes sting.

"Then you did try to contact me.""

"Yes.""

"But you still didn't come back.""

Daniel lowered his head.

"I know.""

Emily looked at him.

"I can't promise things will go back to the way they were.""

Daniel nodded.

"I don't expect you to.""

"I need time.""

"Take all the time you need.""

For a moment, the room became quiet.

Then Richard's phone vibrated.

A message from the security director appeared.

*We located Thomas Blake's vehicle. It is parked outside the old Carter estate.*

Richard looked up.

"He's there.""

Eleanor immediately stood.

"Then we have to go.""

Richard shook his head.

"You're staying here.""

"No.""

"Mother, this isn't a discussion.""

Eleanor walked toward him.

"Your father trusted me with this secret. I won't let another man die because I was too afraid to speak.""

Richard looked at Emily.

"You're staying here too.""

Emily shook her head.

"Dad, no.""

"Emily—"

"Someone threatened my baby. Someone stole from his trust. Someone used my name to intimidate Daniel. I'm not sitting in this hotel waiting for another phone call.""

Richard looked at Noah.

Then at his daughter.

He understood.

"Fine. But you stay beside security at all times.""

Emily nodded.

Jonathan approached.

"I should come with you.""

Richard looked at him.

"Why?""

"Because Samuel and Thomas will listen to me.""

Vanessa grabbed his sleeve.

"You're not going anywhere.""

Jonathan pulled away.

"I've spent months hiding from what I did. I'm finished.""

He turned toward Richard.

"I'll cooperate with your legal team.""

Richard gave a cold nod.

"Then you'll start by giving them every document you have.""

A few minutes later, the group prepared to leave.

Richard, Emily, Daniel, Eleanor, and two security officers entered a black SUV.

Jonathan was placed in a separate vehicle under supervision.

Vanessa remained at the hotel with security.

As the convoy pulled away, Emily looked out the window.

She had never visited the old Carter estate.

Her father had told her stories about it, but he rarely spoke about his childhood.

Now she understood why.

The property sat beyond a long private road lined with old oak trees.

The house appeared at the end of the driveway.

Its windows were dark.

The garden was overgrown.

A single light burned above the front entrance.

Richard stepped out first.

"Stay behind me.""

Emily nodded.

She adjusted Noah's blanket.

Daniel moved beside her.

"Are you okay?""

"No.""

He gave a small nod.

"Neither am I.""

They approached the front door.

It was unlocked.

Inside, the house smelled of dust and old wood.

A grandfather clock stood in the entrance hall.

Its hands had stopped at 11:42.

Eleanor looked at it.

"Your father stopped that clock the night Alexander disappeared.""

Richard stared.

"Why?""

"Because he said the family would never be the same again.""

A noise came from upstairs.

Everyone froze.

One of the security officers raised his hand.

"Stay here.""

He climbed the staircase.

Seconds passed.

Then they heard a crash.

Richard moved forward.

"Emily, stay with your grandmother.""

But Emily was already looking toward the hallway.

A door at the end had opened slightly.

A faint voice came from inside.

"Emily?""

She recognized it.

Daniel grabbed her arm.

"Don't.""

The voice came again.

"Emily, please.""

She looked at Daniel.

Then she slowly approached the doorway.

Inside was a small study.

An old desk stood beneath a window.

And beside it was a man in a wheelchair.

His hair was completely gray.

His face was thin.

But his eyes were unmistakably similar to Richard's.

Emily stopped.

Richard entered behind her.

The man looked up.

Then he smiled faintly.

"Hello, little brother.""

Richard's face crumpled.

"Alexander?""

The man nodded.

"You're late.""

Richard approached him slowly.

For twenty-seven years, he had believed his brother was dead.

Now he was standing in front of him.

Richard knelt.

"Why didn't you come home?""

Alexander looked at him.

"Because I was afraid you'd hate me.""

Richard shook his head.

"I never stopped missing you.""

Alexander's eyes filled with tears.

Then his expression changed.

He looked at Noah.

"Is that the baby?""

Emily nodded.

"Yes. This is Noah.""

Alexander smiled.

"Your grandfather would have loved him.""

Richard looked around the room.

"Where is Samuel Hayes?""

Alexander's smile disappeared.

"He's already gone.""

Richard stood.

"Where?""

Alexander looked toward the desk.

"With the original trust documents.""

Eleanor stepped forward.

"Alexander, did he take the birth certificate?""

Alexander nodded.

"And he took something much worse.""

He opened a drawer and removed an old photograph.

It showed William Carter standing beside three men.

One was Samuel Hayes.

Another was Thomas Blake's father.

The third was a man Emily recognized immediately.

Her father.

Richard Carter.

But the photograph was dated twenty-seven years earlier.

Richard stared.

"I don't remember this.""

Alexander looked at him.

"Because you weren't supposed to.""

He turned the photograph over.

A message had been written on the back.

*The original inheritance was never meant for either son.*

Emily frowned.

"What does that mean?""

Alexander looked directly at Noah.

"It means your grandfather had another child.""

Richard's face went white.

Eleanor whispered:

"William...""

Alexander nodded.

"He had a daughter.""

And before anyone could ask another question, the security officer rushed down the stairs.

"Mr. Carter! We have to leave. Now!""

Richard turned.

"Why?""

The officer pointed toward the driveway.

A vehicle had just pulled up outside.

Its headlights illuminated the entire front of the house.

A man stepped out.

He was carrying a briefcase.

And standing beside him was Thomas Blake.

Alexander looked at the window.

Then he whispered:

"Samuel found us.""

The front door slammed.

A voice echoed through the house.

"Richard Carter! I have the original documents. And unless you want your entire family destroyed, you're going to listen to what I have to say.""

Emily pulled Noah against her chest.

Richard moved in front of her.

Then the man outside spoke again.

"Especially you, Emily. Because the person who really owns your son's inheritance...""

He paused.

"...is standing right behind you.""

May you like

Emily slowly turned.

And saw Eleanor Carter reaching for the door.
