Chapter 7: The Brother Who Was Supposed to Be Dead
Nobody spoke.
Richard Carter stood beside the conference table, staring at his mother as though the woman in front of him had suddenly become a stranger.
"My father had no other son," he finally said.
Eleanor Carter slowly removed her gloves.
"Your father had two sons, Richard.""
"That's impossible.""
"No. What's impossible is that you managed to live your entire life without asking why certain family records were sealed.""
Richard shook his head.
"Mother, I attended his funeral. I handled his estate. I read his will.""
"You read the will he wanted you to read.""
Emily stood near the window, holding Noah.
She looked from her grandmother to her father.
"Dad, is she telling the truth?""
Richard didn't answer.
Eleanor pulled out a chair.
"Sit down, Emily. This concerns your son more than anyone.""
Emily remained standing.
"Then I want the truth.""
Eleanor nodded.
"Fair enough.""
She opened the black box and removed an old photograph.
It showed two young boys standing beside a swimming pool.
One had dark hair and a familiar smile.
The other was slightly taller, with lighter eyes.
Both wore matching white shirts.
Richard stared at the photograph.
His hand began to tremble.
"Where did you get that?""
"Your father kept it in his private study.""
Richard took the photograph.
"That's me.""
Eleanor pointed toward the other boy.
"And that's your brother, Alexander.""
Emily looked closely.
"Why have I never heard of him?""
Eleanor folded her hands.
"Because your grandfather made a decision that destroyed our family.""
She paused.
"Alexander was born four years before Richard. He was the first child, the original heir to the Carter family estate.""
Richard looked at her.
"Then why did I inherit everything?""
"Because Alexander disappeared.""
"Disappeared?""
Eleanor nodded.
"He was seventeen when your grandfather discovered that he had been secretly helping his mother's family with a legal dispute involving the estate.""
Richard frowned.
"What legal dispute?""
Eleanor looked toward Thomas, who was still being held by security officers near the door.
"Your grandfather believed Alexander was going to expose several financial arrangements that had been hidden for decades.""
Thomas suddenly spoke.
"Mrs. Carter, perhaps this isn't the appropriate time.""
Eleanor turned toward him.
"Mr. Blake, you have spent eleven years working for my son. You should know when to remain silent.""
Thomas said nothing.
Eleanor continued.
"Your grandfather told everyone Alexander had died in a boating accident. There was a funeral. There was a closed casket. And there was a death certificate.""
Richard shook his head.
"I remember the funeral.""
"You remember what your father wanted you to remember.""
Emily looked at the photograph.
"Are you saying he was alive?""
Eleanor nodded.
"Yes.""
Richard walked toward the window.
"Why didn't you tell me?""
"Because I was afraid.""
"Of my father?""
"Of what he would do to anyone who tried to expose him.""
Richard turned.
"You're telling me you let me believe my brother was dead for twenty-seven years?""
Eleanor's eyes filled with tears.
"I was trying to keep you alive.""
Silence settled over the room.
Emily looked down at Noah.
Her son had begun moving his tiny hands beneath the blanket.
She kissed his forehead.
Then she asked the question that mattered most.
"What does this have to do with Noah?""
Eleanor opened another envelope.
"Your grandfather's original trust contained a clause. If Alexander was ever found alive, his legal ownership rights would be restored. But if he remained missing, the first child born to Richard's line would become the temporary beneficiary.""
Emily frowned.
"Temporary?""
"Until Alexander's identity and legal status were verified.""
Richard looked at the document.
"Then Noah's trust was never meant to be permanent.""
"Not necessarily," Eleanor replied.
"Your father added another condition.""
She removed a second page.
"If anyone attempted to steal or redirect the missing shares, the full ownership records would automatically be transferred to the first grandchild's legal guardian.""
Emily looked at Richard.
"That's why Thomas said you were my son's legal guardian.""
Richard shook his head.
"I'm not.""
Eleanor nodded.
"Exactly.""
Emily looked confused.
"Then who is?""
Eleanor slowly turned toward Daniel Morgan.
Daniel went pale.
Richard noticed.
"Why are you looking at him?""
Eleanor placed a final document on the table.
"Because your father named Daniel Morgan as Noah's independent legal trustee.""
Emily stared at the paper.
"What?""
Daniel looked down.
"I didn't know.""
Eleanor studied him.
"You were appointed six months before Noah was born. Your grandfather personally selected you after reviewing your work on the financial audit.""
Richard's expression hardened.
"Why would my father choose an employee I barely knew to manage my grandson's inheritance?""
"Because he believed you would be pressured by the people around you.""
Richard looked wounded.
"My own father didn't trust me?""
Eleanor shook her head.
"He loved you. But he knew you were too trusting.""
Emily turned toward Daniel.
"Does this mean you have control over Noah's money?""
"Not for myself," Daniel replied quickly.
"I'm supposed to protect his interests until he's old enough to make decisions.""
Eleanor nodded.
"That is correct.""
Vanessa suddenly laughed.
"Well, this is convenient.""
Everyone turned.
She stood near the conference table, her arms crossed.
"An old woman arrives with a box of mysterious documents, a missing brother appears in a photograph, and suddenly a newborn baby owns millions of dollars?""
Eleanor looked at her.
"You have a remarkable talent for speaking when you should be listening.""
Vanessa's cheeks reddened.
"Don't speak to me like that.""
Eleanor leaned back.
"Then stop behaving like a woman who believes money gives her permission to hurt people.""
Emily looked toward Vanessa.
For the first time, Vanessa seemed less interested in humiliating her.
She seemed frightened.
Jonathan slowly stood.
"Vanessa, we need to leave.""
She turned.
"You're not going anywhere without me.""
Jonathan shook his head.
"I should have listened to you.""
Vanessa blinked.
"What?""
He looked at Richard.
"I knew there were irregularities in the accounts. I didn't know the full extent, but I suspected something was wrong.""
Richard's face hardened.
"And you continued accepting the money.""
Jonathan nodded.
"Yes.""
Emily stared at him.
"Why?""
Jonathan looked ashamed.
"Because I thought I could fix it before anyone noticed.""
Vanessa laughed bitterly.
"You thought you could fix it? You were the one who signed the agreements!""
Jonathan turned toward her.
"Because you told me Thomas had authorization!""
Thomas suddenly struggled against the security officers.
"That's enough.""
Richard raised his hand.
"Take him downstairs.""
The officers began escorting Thomas out.
But as he reached the doorway, he turned toward Eleanor.
"You're making a mistake, Mrs. Carter.""
Eleanor didn't look up.
"No, Thomas. I made one twenty-seven years ago. I'm correcting it now.""
The door closed.
Richard returned to the table.
"Mother, if Alexander is alive, where is he?""
Eleanor looked at the black box.
"I don't know.""
"Then why are you telling us this?""
"Because I received a letter three days ago.""
She removed a small envelope.
The handwriting on the front was unmistakable.
Alexander Carter.
Richard took it.
His fingers shook as he opened the envelope.
Inside was a single sentence.
Richard, if you are finally ready to know the truth, come to the place where our father buried his first secret.
Below it was an address.
A property Richard recognized immediately.
The old Carter family estate.
The house where he had grown up.
The house that had been abandoned after his father's death.
Richard looked at his mother.
"How long have you known he was alive?""
Eleanor lowered her eyes.
"Twenty-seven years.""
Richard's face hardened.
"And you never told me?""
"I received the letter only three days ago.""
Emily looked at the address.
"Dad, what are we going to do?""
Richard folded the paper.
"We're going to find my brother.""
Eleanor shook her head.
"Not tonight.""
Richard turned.
"Why?""
She looked at Emily.
"Because the person who tried to steal Noah's inheritance knows we have discovered the truth.""
Emily instinctively pulled her baby closer.
Eleanor reached into her handbag and removed another photograph.
It showed the entrance to the old estate.
A black car was parked outside.
Someone had written a message across the back.
*WE KNOW WHERE THE BABY IS.*
Emily's face went white.
Richard immediately called security.
But before he could speak, his phone rang.
The caller ID displayed a number he hadn't seen in decades.
An unfamiliar voice answered.
"Richard Carter?""
"Who is this?""
The man paused.
Then he said:
"It's your brother.""
Richard stopped breathing.
Alexander continued.
"Don't come to the estate.""
"Why?""
"Because Thomas Blake isn't working alone.""
Richard looked toward the closed conference room door.
Alexander's next words sent a chill through him.
"Your mother has been protecting the wrong person.""
May you like
The call ended.
And for the first time, Richard began to wonder whether Eleanor Carter had brought them the truth—or led them into another trap.
