Chapter 5: The Father Who Never Disappeared
Emily nearly dropped the photograph.
For several seconds, she couldn't speak.
"Daniel?""
Richard turned toward her.
"Sweetheart, are you sure?""
She nodded slowly.
"I know that handwriting. I know that photograph. But...""
Her voice broke.
"Why would he disappear without telling me?""
Vanessa quickly stood.
"That man is lying.""
Emily looked at her.
"You haven't even seen him.""
"I know exactly who he is.""
Jonathan rose from his chair.
"Vanessa, sit down.""
She ignored him.
"Richard, you cannot allow that man into this building.""
Richard looked at the security officer.
"Where is he?""
"Main lobby, sir. He says he needs to speak to Emily.""
Richard turned toward his daughter.
"Do you want to see him?""
Emily looked at Noah.
Her son was sleeping against her shoulder.
Then she looked at the photograph again.
"Yes.""
Richard nodded.
"Bring him upstairs.""
The security officer left.
Vanessa immediately reached for her husband's arm.
"Jonathan, you have to stop this.""
He pulled away.
"Stop what?""
"Do you understand what happens if Daniel starts talking?""
Jonathan stared at her.
"That's precisely why he needs to talk.""
Vanessa lowered her voice.
"You promised me we'd never let this happen.""
Emily heard her.
"What did you promise?""
Vanessa froze.
Richard looked at her.
"Answer my daughter.""
Vanessa grabbed her handbag.
"I want my lawyer.""
"You're welcome to call one," Richard replied.
She walked toward the door.
Two security officers stepped aside, but neither followed her.
She stopped.
"Are you seriously going to detain me?""
"No one is detaining you," Richard said.
"But I suggest you remain available until we understand what happened.""
Vanessa glared at him.
Then she sat down again.
A few minutes later, footsteps approached the conference room.
The door opened.
A man stood in the doorway.
He looked thinner than Emily remembered.
His dark hair was longer, his beard uneven, and his clothes appeared to have been worn for several days.
But there was no mistaking his face.
Emily's lips parted.
"Daniel?""
The man looked directly at her.
For a moment, neither moved.
Then his eyes dropped to the baby.
His entire expression changed.
"Emily...""
She stood slowly.
"Daniel.""
He took one step forward.
"Is that...?""
She nodded.
"This is Noah.""
Daniel covered his mouth.
His eyes filled with tears.
"He's beautiful.""
Emily looked at him, unable to understand how the man she had once loved could suddenly be standing in front of her after months of silence.
"You disappeared.""
Daniel nodded.
"I know.""
"You stopped answering my calls.""
"I know.""
"You weren't there when Noah was born.""
Daniel closed his eyes.
"I know.""
Emily's voice rose.
"Do you have any idea what that did to me?""
Daniel didn't defend himself.
He simply stood there.
"I'm sorry.""
Emily shook her head.
"Sorry isn't enough.""
"I know.""
"Why did you leave?""
Daniel looked at Richard.
"Because I found something I wasn't supposed to find.""
Richard gestured toward an empty chair.
"Sit down. Start from the beginning.""
Daniel sat.
He looked at Emily again.
"I was working on a financial audit for Whitmore Capital. I noticed several transfers that didn't match the investment records. At first, I thought they were accounting mistakes.""
Jonathan leaned forward.
"What did you find?""
Daniel opened a small envelope.
"Your company was creating false investment agreements. Money was transferred from legitimate development accounts into shell companies. Those companies then moved the money through several offshore accounts.""
Richard took the envelope.
"Who authorized the transfers?""
Daniel looked directly at Jonathan.
"Your wife.""
Vanessa jumped to her feet.
"That's a lie!""
Daniel didn't flinch.
"I have the original transaction records.""
Jonathan turned toward his wife.
"Vanessa?""
She shook her head.
"He's trying to destroy us.""
Daniel continued.
"She used your company's access credentials to approve the transfers. When I discovered it, she offered me money to keep quiet.""
Vanessa laughed.
"Prove it.""
Daniel removed a small USB drive.
"I have the original files.""
Richard handed it to Thomas.
"Have our legal team examine this immediately.""
Thomas nodded and left the room.
Emily was still staring at Daniel.
"Why didn't you tell me?""
Daniel looked at her.
"I tried.""
"When?""
"The night before I disappeared.""
Emily frowned.
"I never received anything.""
"I sent you an email. I called twice. Then someone came to my apartment.""
Her face went pale.
"Who?""
Daniel glanced at Vanessa.
"Two men. They said they were investigating financial fraud. They showed me documents with my name on them.""
Jonathan looked alarmed.
"Those men weren't from our legal department.""
Daniel nodded.
"I know that now.""
"What happened?"" Richard asked.
Daniel rubbed his hands together.
"They threatened to arrest me and make sure I never saw Emily or the baby again. They told me that if I contacted her, they would accuse her of helping me steal the money.""
Emily's eyes filled with tears.
"So you believed them?""
Daniel looked down.
"I was scared.""
"Daniel, I was pregnant.""
"I know.""
"You left me alone.""
"I know.""
She turned away, wiping her cheek.
Daniel leaned forward.
"I thought disappearing would keep you safe.""
Emily shook her head.
"You don't get to decide that for me.""
He lowered his eyes.
"No. I don't.""
Richard remained silent.
He could see the pain in his daughter's face.
This wasn't simply a missing employee or a financial scandal.
It was a man who had left his daughter alone during the most vulnerable period of her life.
And whatever his reasons, Emily had been the one who paid the price.
Richard finally spoke.
"Daniel, do you know who sent those men?""
Daniel nodded.
"I have a name.""
Vanessa's fingers tightened around her handbag.
"Don't.""
Daniel looked at her.
"Why? Are you afraid I'll tell them?""
Jonathan turned sharply.
"Tell us.""
Daniel took a breath.
"The men were hired through a private security company called Blackridge Solutions.""
Richard looked at Thomas's empty chair.
"Have you heard of them?""
Jonathan nodded reluctantly.
"They provide security services for some of our developments.""
Daniel continued.
"But the person who paid them wasn't Jonathan.""
Vanessa stood again.
"You're making another accusation!""
Daniel ignored her.
He looked at Richard.
"The payment came from an account belonging to someone in the Carter Hospitality Group.""
Richard's expression became still.
"Who?""
Daniel placed a final document on the table.
A name appeared at the top.
THOMAS BLAKE.
Richard's executive assistant.
The room went silent.
Emily looked at the document.
"That's the man who was with my father downstairs.""
Richard stared at the paper.
Thomas had worked beside him for eleven years.
He had attended family dinners.
He had been present when Emily graduated from college.
He had even sent flowers when Noah was born.
Richard slowly picked up his phone.
"Call Thomas.""
A security officer stepped forward.
"Sir, he's currently in the executive office.""
"Bring him here.""
The officer nodded and left.
Daniel looked at Emily.
"I didn't know who else to trust. I thought your father would be able to protect you.""
Emily's expression softened for a moment.
"Why didn't you come to me?""
Daniel looked at Noah.
"Because I thought I had already lost you.""
Emily swallowed.
"You didn't lose me because you disappeared. You lost me because you made me believe I wasn't worth coming back for.""
Daniel looked down.
He had no answer.
Richard stood beside his daughter.
"We'll deal with the truth first. Everything else can wait.""
A knock sounded at the door.
The security officer returned.
But he wasn't alone.
Thomas Blake entered the room, holding a folder.
He looked at Richard.
"Sir, you asked for me?""
Richard placed the document on the table.
"Do you recognize this account?""
Thomas glanced down.
For a fraction of a second, his face changed.
Then he smiled.
"Of course. That's an old corporate account.""
Richard watched him.
"Why was money transferred from that account to Blackridge Solutions?""
Thomas closed the folder.
"I'd need to review the records.""
Daniel shook his head.
"Don't bother. I have the original authorization.""
Thomas turned toward him.
Then he looked at Emily.
And his eyes stopped on Noah.
Something cold passed across his face.
"Well," he said quietly.
"I suppose we should stop pretending this is only about money.""
Richard's voice dropped.
"What does that mean?""
Thomas slowly closed the conference room door.
"It means Daniel didn't disappear because he found twelve million dollars.""
May you like
He looked directly at Noah.
"He disappeared because of what that child inherited.""
