Chapter 10: The Truth I Chose
I called my best friend Tyler before I even finished reading the contract.
He answered immediately.
“Marcus?””
I didn’t speak.
That silence told him everything.
“You found it.””
My grip tightened around the phone.
“You knew.””
A long pause.
Then:
“Yes.””
The word hurt more than I expected.
“You signed a contract with Richard.””
“I was trying to help you.””
“Help me?””
My voice shook.
“You helped him destroy my wedding.””
“No.””
“Yes.””
“I didn’t know what he planned.””
“Then why sign?””
Tyler sighed.
“Because I thought he was helping expose the truth.””
I laughed.
Everyone had the same excuse.
I thought.
I believed.
I didn’t know.
But their choices still hurt people.
I met Tyler that night.
He looked exhausted.
“I should have told you.””
“Yes.””
“I was afraid.””
“Of what?””
He looked down.
“Of losing you.””
That answer almost made me angry.
Because he had lost me anyway.
“What did Richard want?””
Tyler swallowed.
“He wanted your mother to panic.””
“Why?””
“Because he knew she would reveal everything if she thought she was losing you.””
I stared.
“So the wedding…”
“Yes.””
“The hose?””
“Nia was pushed into it.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
Tyler looked at me.
“She was angry.””
“Yes.””
“She chose to do it.””
“Yes.””
“But Richard created the situation.””
I knew he was right.
And I hated that.
Because the truth was never simple.
A week later, everything came out.
The documents.
The contracts.
The recordings.
The lies.
Richard was exposed.
Not by revenge.
Not by violence.
By the truth he spent years trying to bury.
My mother finally told me everything.
Daniel became part of my life slowly.
Not as a replacement.
Never that.
Because Evelyn was still the woman who held my hand through every nightmare.
She was still my mother.
And Daniel was the man who finally got the chance to know his son.
As for Nia…
We met one final time.
She stood outside my house.
No anger.
No excuses.
Just sadness.
“I’m sorry.””
I looked at her.
“I know.””
“I loved you.””
“I loved you too.””
That was the hardest part.
Because sometimes love exists beside betrayal.
It doesn’t erase it.
“I hope someday you forgive me.””
I nodded.
“I hope someday you forgive yourself.””
She cried.
Then she left.
Months later, I returned to the place where everything began.
The garden where my wedding ended.
The flowers had grown back.
New roses.
Different colors.
My mother stood beside me.
“You okay?””
I smiled.
“Yeah.””
She looked around.
“Funny.””
“What?””
“This place almost became the worst day of your life.””
I looked at the garden.
Then at her.
“No.””
She raised an eyebrow.
“What was it then?””
I thought about all the secrets.
All the pain.
All the people who hurt me.
All the people who loved me badly.
And I finally understood.
“It was the day everyone stopped pretending.””
My mother smiled.
And for the first time in years…
Nobody was hiding anything.
Not my father.
Not my mother.
Not me.
May you like
Because the truth had broken my family.
But it was also the thing that finally gave us a chance to rebuild.
