Chapter 6: The Birth Certificate Lie
I stared at the message until the words stopped looking real.
*Ask your mother why she changed your birth certificate.*
For a few seconds, I convinced myself it was another manipulation.
Another game.
Another piece of information thrown into my life to make me doubt the people around me.
But there was one problem.
My father knew something about my birth certificate.
Something I didn’t even know existed.
I walked into the kitchen where my mother was sitting with a cup of untouched coffee.
She looked at my face and immediately knew.
“What did he tell you?””
I placed my phone on the table.
She read the message.
The color slowly disappeared from her face.
“Mom.””
She didn’t speak.
“Why did he say that?””
Her fingers tightened around the coffee cup.
“Marcus…”
“No.””
I sat across from her.
“No more protecting me. No more deciding what I can handle.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I was trying to give you a normal life.””
“You gave me a life built on secrets.””
The silence between us was painful.
Finally, she whispered:
“I changed your birth certificate because I had no choice.””
I felt my stomach drop.
“What does that mean?””
She looked toward the hallway.
The hallway where she had hung my childhood photos.
The hallway where she had watched me grow up.
“The name on your original birth certificate wasn’t Marcus Carter.””
I stopped breathing.
“What?””
She opened a drawer and pulled out a small envelope.
Inside was an old document.
Yellowed.
Folded.
Carefully hidden.
I unfolded it.
And there it was.
My name.
But underneath it was a different last name.
A last name I had never seen before.
Evelyn watched my face.
“Your father’s real name isn’t Richard Carter.””
I looked up.
“What are you talking about?””
She swallowed.
“Richard Carter was an identity he created.””
The room went quiet.
“You’re saying my father lied about his name?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because he was running from something.””
I stared at the document.
Every piece of my life suddenly felt like a puzzle with missing pieces.
“Who was he?””
My mother looked terrified.
“Someone who knew how to disappear.””
Before I could ask another question, there was a knock at the door.
My body went tense.
I knew who it was.
Richard.
I opened the door before he could knock again.
He stood there holding an old briefcase.
He looked at my expression and smiled.
“You found out.””
I stepped outside and closed the door behind me.
“You lied about your name.””
His smile faded slightly.
“Your mother told you that?””
“She told me enough.””
Richard sighed.
“Evelyn always leaves out the parts that make her look bad.””
“You abandoned us.””
His jaw tightened.
“I left because I had to.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“You left because you wanted to.””
He looked past me toward the house.
Then he lowered his voice.
“Your mother has spent fifteen years making me the villain.””
“Because you were.””
His eyes hardened.
“You have no idea what she did.””
“I’m tired of hearing that.””
“Then listen.””
He opened the briefcase.
Inside were newspaper articles.
Old court records.
Photographs.
And one picture.
A picture of my mother.
Standing beside a man I didn’t recognize.
But Richard’s next words made my blood freeze.
“That man was your biological father.””
I stared at him.
“What?””
Richard looked almost sad.
“Evelyn never told you the truth about your birth.””
My heart started racing.
“That’s impossible.””
“Is it?””
He pulled out another document.
A DNA report.
I didn’t take it.
I didn’t want to.
Because some part of me knew that if I touched it, everything would change.
“You’re lying.””
Richard stepped closer.
“I wish I was.””
Then his phone rang.
He looked at the screen.
His expression changed.
Not fear.
Panic.
He answered.
“What happened?””
A woman’s voice spoke too quietly for me to hear.
Richard turned away.
“No. Don’t involve him.””
A pause.
Then he looked directly at me.
And whispered:
“It’s too late.””
The call ended.
I stared at him.
“Who was that?””
Richard didn’t answer.
Instead, he looked at my house.
At my mother.
And said:
“Marcus, you need to know something.””
“What?””
“The woman you’ve called your mother your entire life…”
He stopped.

Then said the words that shattered me.
“She wasn’t the only person who lied about who you are.””
