Chapter 9: The Man Behind The Lies
I didn’t tell anyone I was meeting Daniel.
Not my mother.
Not Claire.
Not Nia.
Nobody.
Because after fifteen years of secrets, I needed one conversation where nobody could control the truth.
I met him at an old diner outside town.
He was sitting in the corner.
Waiting.
When I walked in, he stood.
And I knew.
Not because someone told me.
Because I saw myself in him.
The same eyes.
The same expression.
The same nervous habit of rubbing his thumb against his palm.
“Marcus.””
Hearing him say my name almost broke me.
I sat down.
“You’re alive.””
He nodded.
“I am.””
“You let me believe you were dead.””
His eyes lowered.
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because Richard made sure I had no choice.””
I leaned forward.
“Everyone says that.””
Daniel looked hurt.
“I understand why you don’t believe me.””
“Do you?””
“Yes.””
He took a breath.
“Because from your perspective, everyone abandoned you.””
That was the first thing anyone had said that felt true.
I looked away.
“Tell me everything.””
And he did.
Daniel explained how Richard had taken control of the company.
How he had threatened him.
How he had manipulated legal documents.
How Claire and Evelyn had spent years trying to keep me safe.
But one question remained.
“Nia.””
Daniel’s expression changed.
“What about her?””
“Did she know?””
He was quiet.
Then:
“Not at first.””
“What does that mean?””
“Richard found her father years ago.””
I frowned.
“Her father?””
Daniel nodded.
“Richard didn’t just destroy my life.””
He destroyed many others.
Including Nia’s family.
“She thought Richard was helping her.””
“And he wasn’t.””
“No.””
Daniel looked at me.
“He was using her pain.””
I closed my eyes.
The woman who destroyed my wedding was not innocent.
But she wasn’t the mastermind either.
When I returned home, Nia was waiting.
“I know where you went.””
I looked at her.
“Of course you do.””
She looked ashamed.
“I’m sorry.””
Those words used to mean everything.
Now they meant almost nothing.
“I met my real father.””
Her face changed.
“He told you.””
“Yes.””
She sat down.
“My father knew.””
“What?””
“Richard knew Daniel was alive.””
I stared.
“How?””
“Because my father helped him hide.””
My anger returned.
“Your father helped destroy my family.””
She nodded.
“I know.””
“Why?””
“Because Richard promised him money.””
The pattern was clear.
Everyone had been used.
Everyone had been hurt.
But innocent people still made terrible choices.
Then Nia whispered:
“I have something else.””
She handed me a folder.
Inside was a contract.
A contract between Richard and her father.
The final page had a signature.
Richard’s.
And another.
Nia’s father’s.
But underneath was a third name.
A name that made my blood run cold.
Because it wasn’t a stranger.
It was someone I knew.
Someone I trusted.
May you like
Someone who had been standing beside me at my wedding.
My best friend.
