Chapter 4: The Truth Buried Fifteen Years Ago

I went home expecting answers.

Instead, I found my mother packing a suitcase.

“Mom?””

She stopped.

For a moment, she looked guilty.

Not surprised.

Guilty.

“You know.””

I froze.

“You knew?””

She sat down slowly.

“I knew this day would come.””

“What day?””

“The day someone would tell you a version of the truth.””

I put the photograph on the table.

“Nia says you forced Dad to leave.””

My mother closed her eyes.

Then she nodded.

“Yes.””

The word felt impossible.

“Why?””

She looked at the floor.

“Because your father was dangerous.””

I almost laughed.

“Dangerous?””

“Yes.””

She opened the suitcase.

Inside were more documents.

“I found out he was stealing money from the company.””

“My father?””

“He was using my name.””

I stared.

“You said it was his company.””

“I let everyone believe that.””

“Why?””

“Because I loved him.””

Her voice cracked.

For the first time, I saw my mother not as my mother.

But as a woman who had been hurt.

“I discovered he had another family.””

I felt sick.

“Another family?””

She nodded.

“And when I confronted him, he threatened to take you.””

The room went silent.

“My father threatened me?””

“He said if I exposed him, he would disappear with you.””

I sat down.

Everything I believed about my childhood was collapsing.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

She looked at me.

“Because children deserve a mother’s protection, not their parents’ war.””

Before I could respond, someone knocked.

Three slow knocks.

My mother looked terrified.

Not surprised.

Terrified.

I opened the door.

Richard Carter stood there.

Older.

Gray hair.

But the same eyes.

The eyes I had seen in old photographs.

“Hello, Marcus.””

My hands tightened.

“You shouldn’t be here.””

He smiled sadly.

“I understand why you think that.””

My mother stepped forward.

“Leave.””

Richard ignored her.

“I came to tell my son the truth.””

I looked at him.

“Which truth?””

He glanced at Evelyn.

“The one she has been hiding.””

My mother’s face went pale.

Richard pulled out an envelope.

“I have proof.””

He handed it to me.

I didn’t want to take it.

But I did.

Inside was a document.

A custody agreement.

Signed fifteen years earlier.

And my mother’s signature was at the bottom.

I looked up.

“What is this?””

Richard smiled.

“Ask your mother why she agreed to give me full custody.””

My mother whispered:

“Marcus, don’t listen to him.””

But it was too late.

Because at the bottom of the page was another signature.

A witness.

Someone who had been there that night.

Someone who knew what really happened.

And when I saw the name, my entire body went cold.

It was Nia’s mother.
