Chapter 3: The Room She Thought Nobody Would Enter
After that day, my dad started paying attention.
Not in an obvious way.
He didn’t accuse Vanessa.
He didn’t scream.
He simply watched.
And that scared her more than anger would have.
Because Vanessa was used to controlling the story.
She knew exactly what to say.
She knew how to cry at the right moment.
She knew how to make herself look like the victim.
But now my dad was noticing the details.
The missing groceries.
The comments about my weight.
The way Vanessa’s voice changed whenever he left the room.
One evening, Dad came home early.
He found me washing dishes.
“Where’s Vanessa?””
I looked over my shoulder.
“She went shopping.””
He nodded.
Then he asked:
“Did she say anything before she left?””
I dried my hands.
“Why?””
“Because I’m asking.””
I hesitated.
Then I told him.
“She said you’re becoming different.””
Dad frowned.
“What does that mean?””
“She said you used to listen to her.””
His expression became serious.
“Emily.””
“Yeah?””
“I need you to tell me everything.””
I looked at him.
“Everything?””
“Yes.””
That night, I told him.
Not just about the cake.
Not just about the note.
Everything.
The comments.
The rules.
The way Vanessa treated me when he wasn’t around.
Dad sat silently.
When I finished, he looked older.
“I’m sorry.””
I shook my head.
“It’s not your fault.””
But he looked like he didn’t believe me.
“It is.””
The next morning, Dad made a decision.
He wanted proof.
Not because he didn’t believe me.
Because he knew Vanessa would deny everything.
So we started paying attention.
And within days, we found more.
A bank statement hidden inside Vanessa’s closet.
A list of expensive items Lucas had bought.
A folder with documents.
Then one afternoon, Dad called me downstairs.
His face was pale.
“What happened?”” I asked.
He held a piece of paper.
“Where did Vanessa keep the jewelry box?””
I frowned.
“Mom’s jewelry?””
He nodded.
I felt sick.
“Why?””
He handed me the paper.
It was a receipt.
A sale receipt.
My mother’s necklace.
Sold.
My hands started shaking.
“That was hers.””
“I know.””
“She sold it?””
Dad didn’t answer.
Because he knew.
A few minutes later, Vanessa walked through the front door.
She stopped when she saw us.
“What’s going on?””
Dad held up the receipt.
“Explain this.””
Her face changed.
Only for a second.
Then she smiled.
“Oh, that.””
“You sold my late wife’s necklace.””
“I was going to replace it.””
“With what?””
She crossed her arms.
“Why are you attacking me?””
Dad stared at her.
“You took something that didn’t belong to you.””
Vanessa laughed.
“You’re really letting your daughter turn you against me?””
I stepped forward.
“She didn’t need to.””
Vanessa looked at me.
“Excuse me?””
“Your actions did.””
For the first time, she looked scared.
Not because of me.
Because she knew my dad was seeing her clearly.
That night, Dad locked his office.
He told me not to worry.
But I knew something was happening.
Something bigger.
At midnight, I woke up to voices downstairs.
I opened my door.
Vanessa was talking.
Quietly.
On the phone.
“I told you, Lucas needs to be protected.””
I froze.
She continued.
“No. If he finds out, everything falls apart.””
My heart started racing.
Who was she talking about?
I moved closer.
Then I heard another voice through the phone.
A man.
May you like
And Vanessa said one sentence that made my entire body go cold.
“Don’t worry. Emily will never know that her father isn’t the only one who has been lied to.””
