Chapter 5: The Photograph in the Backpack

My father stared at the photograph like it had burned him.

His fingers trembled.

“Where did you get this?””

I had never seen him like that.

Not angry.

Not sad.

Broken.

“I found it behind Vanessa’s closet.””

He looked at me.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because I didn’t know what it meant.””

He turned the photograph over.

There was writing on the back.

A date.

And a name.

A name that made his face change.

“Who is he?”” I whispered.

Dad didn’t answer.

He just sat down.

Finally, he said:

“His name is Daniel.””

“Do you know him?””

A long silence.

“Yes.””

My heart sank.

“How?””

Dad looked toward the window.

“Before I met Vanessa… Daniel was my business partner.””

I waited.

“And?””

“And he betrayed me.””

The story came out slowly.

Years earlier, before Mom got sick, my dad had owned a small company with Daniel. They had been friends for nearly a decade.

Until money disappeared.

Contracts vanished.

And Daniel blamed my father.

The partnership ended.

Daniel disappeared.

“I thought he left the country,” Dad said.

I looked at the picture.

“But he was with Vanessa.””

Dad nodded.

“That means…”

He didn’t finish.

Because we both understood.

Vanessa’s past wasn’t random.

She had entered our lives for a reason.

That night, Dad searched everything.

Old emails.

Old documents.

Old messages.

Then he found something.

A hidden email account connected to Vanessa.

Inside were conversations.

Hundreds of them.

Between Vanessa and Daniel.

My father opened the newest message.

The date was from three days earlier.

Daniel had written:

“The girl found the note. Time to move faster.””

I felt sick.

They knew.

They had known.

Dad kept scrolling.

Then he found the message that changed everything.

Daniel wrote:

“Once the house is transferred, Lucas will get what he deserves. Emily cannot stay.””

My father stood up.

“No.””

His voice was full of rage.

“They planned this.””

I looked at him.

“What did they want?””

He didn’t answer immediately.

Then he opened another file.

A legal document.

My name was on it.

My mother’s inheritance.

The money she left me.

The house.

Everything.

Vanessa hadn’t wanted a family.

She wanted what belonged to me.

A sound came from behind us.

A door closing.

We turned.

Vanessa stood there.

She had heard everything.

For a moment, nobody moved.

Then she smiled.

But this time, there was no kindness.

No pretending.

“You finally figured it out.””

Dad stepped forward.

“You used me.””

Vanessa laughed.

“You made it too easy.””

My hands went cold.

“Why?””

She looked at me.

“Because everything in this house was supposed to become Lucas’s.””

Dad shook his head.

“You’re unbelievable.””

“No,” she said.

“I’m patient.””

She reached into her purse.

My father immediately moved in front of me.

Vanessa smiled.

“Relax.””

She pulled out a folder.

Then she placed it on the table.

“You should read this before you decide you’ve won.””

Dad opened it.

His expression changed.

Again.

But this time, it wasn’t anger.

It was fear.

“What is this?””

Vanessa looked at me.

And whispered:

“Ask your daughter why she never told you who really gave her that note.””

My father slowly turned toward me.

May you like

And I realized Vanessa had one final secret.

One that could destroy everything.
