Chapter 6: The Secret I Buried

The silence in that room was louder than any scream.

My father stood there holding the folder Vanessa had placed on the table.

His eyes moved from the papers to me.

Then back to the papers.

I had spent weeks imagining the moment he would finally know the truth.

I thought I would feel relieved.

Instead, I felt like I was falling.

“Emily,” Dad said quietly.

“What is she talking about?””

My throat tightened.

Vanessa leaned against the doorway, watching me like she had been waiting for this exact moment.

“Tell him,” she said.

I looked at her.

“You don’t get to act like you care about honesty.””

Her smile faded slightly.

But she recovered quickly.

“I’m not the one hiding things.””

Dad looked at me.

“Emily.””

I hated the disappointment in his voice.

Not anger.

Not accusation.

Just confusion.

And that hurt more.

I reached for the folder.

“Can I see it?””

Dad handed it to me.

Inside were documents.

Bank records.

Messages.

And one photograph.

The photograph was of me.

But not the me from now.

The me from three years ago.

I was standing outside a restaurant with a woman I barely remembered.

My hands started shaking.

“Who is she?””

Dad asked.

I didn’t answer.

Because I knew.

Vanessa stepped forward.

“She’s the reason Emily found the note.””

Dad looked at her.

“What are you saying?””

Vanessa crossed her arms.

“I’m saying your daughter has known about my past longer than she admitted.””

“That’s not true,” I whispered.

Vanessa looked directly at me.

“Really?””

I felt trapped.

Because there was one piece of the story I had never told my father.

The day I found the note wasn’t the first time I had suspected Vanessa.

A month earlier, I had seen her meeting someone.

Daniel.

I was walking home from school when I saw them outside a coffee shop.

At first, I thought I was mistaken.

Then I heard his voice.

“Your father still trusts you?””

Vanessa laughed.

“Completely.””

I had hidden behind a parked car and listened.

I should have recorded it.

I should have told Dad.

But I was scared.

Scared that I would look paranoid.

Scared that I would destroy the only family I had left.

So I did something I regretted.

I followed Vanessa.

And I found the note.

But I never told my father about Daniel.

“I saw them together,” I finally admitted.

Dad’s face changed.

“When?””

“Before I found the note.””

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

I looked down.

“Because I thought you’d think I was trying to ruin your marriage.””

The room went quiet.

Then Dad walked toward me.

“Emily.””

I looked up.

“I would never think that.””

My eyes burned.

“But I wasn’t sure.””

He looked hurt.

Not because I had hidden something.

Because I had been afraid to trust him.

Vanessa rolled her eyes.

“This emotional reunion is sweet, but it doesn’t change the fact that Emily has been investigating me.””

Dad turned sharply.

“You manipulated her.””

“I protected myself.””

“You targeted my daughter.””

Vanessa laughed bitterly.

“Your daughter was always going to hate me.””

I stepped forward.

“No.””

Everyone looked at me.

“I didn’t hate you.””

Vanessa stared.

“I wanted you to be real.””

For the first time, she had no answer.

Because that was the truth.

I didn’t want a perfect stepmother.

I didn’t want someone to replace my mom.

I just wanted someone who didn’t make me feel like I was unwanted in my own home.

Dad picked up the folder again.

“What exactly is your plan?””

Vanessa smiled.

“You’ll find out.””

Then she walked away.

That scared me more than if she had screamed.

Because Vanessa had always been dangerous when she was calm.

The next morning, my father made a decision.

“We’re leaving.””

I looked at him.

“Leaving?””

“For a few days.””

“What about Vanessa?””

“I’m handling it.””

But before we could leave, my father received a phone call.

I watched his expression change.

“Who is it?”” I asked.

He didn’t answer.

He just slowly lowered the phone.

“It was the bank.””

My stomach dropped.

“What happened?””

Dad looked at me.

“Someone tried to access your inheritance account.””

My blood went cold.

“Who?””

He swallowed.

“They used your name.””

I stared at him.

“That’s impossible.””

Dad looked toward the stairs.

“No.””

His voice became quiet.

“It’s not impossible.””

May you like

Then he said the words that made my entire world stop.

“Because the person who tried to access it had your signature.””
