Chapter 9: The Woman Who Knew Everything
The woman’s name was Rachel.
She had been my mother’s private investigator.
For years, she had carried information that could have changed everything.
But she never contacted us.
Until now.
“Why now?”” my father asked.
Rachel’s voice was quiet through the phone.
“Because Vanessa knows you found the files.””
My father looked at me.
“How?””
Rachel sighed.
“She has always been one step ahead.””
The next morning, we met Rachel at a small coffee shop outside town.
She looked nothing like I imagined.
She wasn’t mysterious.
She wasn’t intimidating.
She looked like someone who had been waiting years to finally tell the truth.
She placed a folder on the table.
“Your wife hired me six months before she passed.””
Dad looked shocked.
“Why?””
“Because she suspected someone was targeting your family.””
I looked at the folder.
“Vanessa?””
Rachel nodded.
“But Vanessa wasn’t the beginning.””
“Daniel?””
“Yes.””
Rachel opened the folder.
Inside were photographs.
Vanessa meeting Daniel.
Vanessa researching our family.
Vanessa collecting information about my mother’s inheritance.
My father closed his eyes.
“She planned all of this.””
Rachel shook her head.
“Not exactly.””
We looked at her.
“What do you mean?””
“She was supposed to marry someone else first.””
My stomach dropped.
“Who?””
Rachel looked at my father.
“Your former employee.””
Dad went silent.
“Daniel.””
Rachel nodded.
The pieces finally connected.
Daniel wasn’t just Vanessa’s partner.
He was the reason she entered our lives.
But then Rachel said something unexpected.
“They had a disagreement.””
“About what?””
Rachel looked at me.
“About Emily.””
I frowned.
“Me?””
“Yes.””
Rachel explained.
Daniel wanted to remove me from the inheritance immediately.
But Vanessa refused.
“Why?””
Rachel opened another document.
“Because Vanessa had a daughter.””
I stared.
“What?””
Rachel pushed a photograph forward.
A young girl.
A girl around my age.
“That’s Lucas’s sister.””
I shook my head.
“Lucas doesn’t have a sister.””
Rachel looked at me.
“Not anymore.””
The room went silent.
“She died years ago.””
My heart sank.
“What does that have to do with me?””
Rachel answered softly.
“Your mother found out Vanessa blamed herself for her daughter’s death.””
I didn’t understand.
Rachel continued.
“Vanessa’s daughter needed medical treatment. Daniel refused to help. Vanessa lost everything trying to save her.””
My father looked confused.
“So Vanessa entered our lives for revenge?””
“No.””
Rachel looked down.
“She entered your lives because she believed your family had something Daniel took from her.””
I felt sick.
Because suddenly Vanessa wasn’t just a villain.
She was someone who had been broken.
But broken people could still hurt others.
Rachel continued.
“She became obsessed. She convinced herself that taking Emily’s inheritance was justice.””
Dad whispered:
“She planned to hurt my daughter because of something Daniel did.””
“Yes.””
Then Rachel handed us one last envelope.
“Your wife wanted you to have this if anything happened to her.””
My father opened it.
Inside was a final note.
Not from Vanessa.
From Daniel.
A confession.
He admitted everything.
The fraud.
The manipulation.
The plan.
But there was one sentence that made my father stop.
“What?”” I asked.
He handed me the letter.
I read it.
And my heart dropped.
Daniel wrote:
“Vanessa doesn’t know the truth. The child she believes she lost was never actually gone.””
I looked up.
“What does that mean?””
Nobody answered.
Then my father’s phone rang.
This time, the number wasn’t unknown.
It was Vanessa.
He answered.
Her voice was shaking.
“Your daughter found out, didn’t she?””
Dad looked at me.
“Found out what?””
May you like
Vanessa whispered:
“The truth about Lucas.””
