Chapter 4: The Man at the Gate

The headlights appeared through the rain fifteen minutes later.

Two white beams swept across the living room wall, then stopped.

Nia was sitting between Malik and me on the couch. She had not let go of my hand since Marcus's call.

Vanessa stood near the kitchen window, pale and motionless.

Marcus was by the front door, staring through the glass.

“Is that him?”” I asked.

Marcus nodded.

“Yes.””

A car door opened outside.

Then another.

I stood.

Nia gripped my fingers harder.

“Dad?””

“I’m here.””

“What if he doesn’t like me?””

The question hit me harder than anything Vanessa had said all night.

I crouched in front of her.

“He’s been looking for you for eleven years.””

“That doesn't answer my question.””

“No,” I said.

“It doesn't.””

She watched my face.

“Then tell me the truth.””

I brushed a strand of hair away from her forehead.

“I don't know what he's going to feel when he sees you. But none of this is your fault.””

She nodded.

Malik stood too.

“I’m coming with you.””

I looked at him.

“You stay here.””

“Why?””

“Because I need you to stay with Nia.””

Malik glanced at Vanessa.

“What about her?””

Vanessa looked away.

“I'll stay.””

Malik gave a cold laugh.

“That's what I'm worried about.””

Before Vanessa could answer, there was a knock at the door.

Three slow knocks.

Everyone went silent.

Marcus reached for the handle.

I caught his arm.

“I’ll open it.””

He looked at me.

“Be ready.””

“For what?””

He didn't answer.

I opened the door.

The rain had turned into a fine mist.

A man stood on the porch beneath the weak yellow light.

He was taller than me.

Thinner.

Older than the photograph.

His black hair was streaked with gray. There was a scar running from the corner of his left eyebrow toward his temple. His clothes were simple—dark jeans, black jacket, worn boots.

He looked exhausted.

Not weak.

Just like a man who had spent a very long time trying to get somewhere.

His eyes moved past me.

They found Nia.

And stopped.

He didn't speak.

Neither did she.

I had never seen two people recognize each other without ever having met.

Nia slowly stood.

The man's mouth trembled.

“Is it really her?””

Marcus answered.

“Yes.””

The man took one step forward.

Then stopped.

“I thought…”

His voice broke.

“I thought I'd never see her.””

Nia looked at me.

“Dad?””

I nodded.

“You can stay here.””

She looked back at the man.

“What’s your name?””

He swallowed.

“Adrian.””

She frowned.

“Adrian what?””

“Bell.””

Marcus looked down.

Adrian stepped closer.

“I’m your father.””

Nia's eyes widened.

For a second she seemed very small.

Then she asked the one question nobody in the room wanted to hear.

“Where were you?””

Adrian closed his eyes.

When he opened them, tears were running down his face.

“I was trying to come back.””

Vanessa suddenly spoke.

“You don't get to do this.””

Adrian's head turned.

His expression changed instantly.

The grief disappeared.

Something harder took its place.

“You.””

Vanessa stepped away from the window.

“You told everyone I was dangerous.””

“You were.””

“You stole my daughter.””

“I saved her.””

“You lied about me.””

“I told the truth.””

Marcus stepped between them.

“Not in front of her.””

Adrian looked at Nia again.

“I’m sorry.””

Nia stood perfectly still.

“For what?””

“For not being there.””

“Why weren't you?””

Adrian glanced at me.

“That’s a long story.””

“I have time.””

The words came from Nia.

Adrian looked stunned.

Then he nodded.

“I didn't leave you.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“Adrian—”

“I was taken.””

I stared at him.

“By whom?””

Adrian looked at Marcus.

Marcus's jaw tightened.

“We should sit down.””

“No,” I said.

“We’ve sat through enough lies tonight.””

I stepped onto the porch.

“Tell me here.””

Adrian stared at me.

“You’re Daniel.””

“Yes.””

“You look like your father.””

“I’ve heard that.””

“He told me about you.””

That surprised me.

“What did he tell you?””

“That you loved your family.””

I thought about the bank account.

The lies.

The dinner table.

The way Nia had looked at the crab legs.

“Then he was wrong about something.””

Adrian frowned.

“What's that?””

“I didn't know my own family.””

Adrian looked past me at Vanessa.

“Neither did I.””

A police siren sounded somewhere in the distance.

Nia turned toward the street.

“Are the police coming?””

Adrian shook his head.

“No.””

Marcus answered for him.

“They're with me.””

I looked at Marcus.

“You brought police?””

“No.””

He pulled out his phone and showed me a message.

We have the records. Proceed carefully.

“What records?””

“The original hospital files.””

He looked at Vanessa.

“And the death certificate.””

Vanessa's face went completely blank.

I saw it.

The fear.

Not of Adrian.

Not of me.

Of the papers.

I went back inside.

“Everybody sits.””

Vanessa didn't move.

“Now.””

She finally sat at the far end of the couch.

Nia sat in the middle.

Adrian remained standing.

Marcus stood behind him.

I placed the brown envelope on the coffee table.

“Start with Rachel.””

Adrian swallowed.

“Rachel was my girlfriend.””

“I know.””

“She was pregnant with Nia.””

Nia stared at him.

“Did Mom know you?””

Adrian's face softened.

“She knew everything.””

“Did she love me?””

He nodded immediately.

“She loved you more than anything.””

Nia's eyes filled.

“Then why did I never know her?””

Adrian looked at Vanessa.

“Because Rachel died before she could bring you home.””

Vanessa whispered, “That's not what happened.””

Adrian snapped toward her.

“You want to do this now?””

“Tell him.””

“Tell me what?””

Vanessa looked at me.

“Rachel didn't die the way they said.””

My skin prickled.

“What does that mean?””

“She didn't die during delivery.””

Adrian shook his head.

“She died afterward.””

“How much afterward?””

“Four hours,” he said.

I stared at him.

“Then why did everybody say she died immediately?””

Vanessa's voice trembled.

“Because the hospital wouldn't release the baby.””

“Why?””

“Because there was a dispute over paternity.””

I looked at Adrian.

He nodded.

“I was arrested that night.””

“For what?””

“Kidnapping.””

Nia whispered, “You were arrested for trying to take me?””

“No.””

Adrian crouched to her level.

“I was arrested because someone told police I had taken you from the hospital without permission.””

“Who?””

He looked at Vanessa.

She said nothing.

I felt anger rising again.

“You accused him?””

Vanessa shook her head.

“I didn't make the call.””

“Who did?””

“I don't know.””

Marcus pulled a folder from his bag.

“I know.””

He placed a page on the table.

“Emergency dispatch recording.””

I looked at it.

“Caller identification?””

“Blocked.””

I read the transcript.

The caller claimed a man named Adrian Bell had abducted a newborn from Harborview Hospital.

Time of call:

2:17 a.m.

Nia was born at 1:46 a.m.

Rachel died at 5:51 a.m.

I stared at the timeline.

“Why would someone call the police thirty-four minutes after she was born?””

Marcus answered.

“Because someone knew the baby was going to disappear.””

Nia looked at Vanessa.

“Did you take me?””

Vanessa began to cry.

“I took you because they were going to send you into foster care.””

Adrian shook his head.

“That isn't true.””

“I didn't know what else to do.””

“You had no right.””

“I was your sister's family!””

“You weren't her mother.””

The room went silent.

Vanessa whispered, “No.””

Adrian stepped toward her.

“You wanted the baby because Rachel left you everything.””

I looked at Vanessa.

“Everything?””

Adrian nodded.

“Rachel had a trust.””

My stomach tightened.

“What kind of trust?””

“Money.””

“How much?””

“Enough to change someone's life.””

Marcus added, “And enough to explain the account.””

I turned toward Vanessa.

“Did you take Rachel's money?””

Vanessa's shoulders shook.

“I used it for Nia.””

“Then why is it in an account you controlled?””

“Because she was a child.””

“You could have told me.””

“You would have taken her away.””

“She was my niece.””

“She was my daughter!””

The words exploded out of Vanessa.

Nobody moved.

Nia stared at her.

Vanessa realized what she'd said.

Her hand flew to her mouth.

Malik looked sick.

I spoke quietly.

“Rachel was her mother.””

Vanessa lowered her hand.

“No.””

“You just said—”

“I loved her like my own.””

Adrian shook his head.

“You didn't.””

Vanessa looked at him.

“You don't know what it was like.””

“I know what you did.””

I looked at Marcus.

“What happened to Adrian after the arrest?””

Marcus's expression hardened.

“The charges were dropped.””

“Then why didn't he come back?””

Adrian answered.

“Because I was transferred before they dropped them.””

“Transferred where?””

“A private psychiatric hospital.””

I frowned.

“Why?””

“I was told I was unstable.””

I immediately looked away from his face.

Not because I believed it.

Because I remembered the note from my father.

Vanessa finally failed to keep her promise.

Adrian continued.

“They kept me there for eight months.””

“On whose authority?””

“My doctor said a family member had signed the admission papers.””

I looked at Vanessa.

She shook her head.

“I didn't sign them.””

Marcus put another document on the table.

“Your father found the signature.””

I picked it up.

The page was old.

Yellowed at the edges.

But the name was unmistakable.

*Daniel Carter.*

My name.

I stared at it.

“No.””

Adrian looked at me.

“Your father never signed it.””

My hands began to shake.

“Then who did?””

Marcus turned the page over.

“There was a fingerprint beside the signature.””

I looked at Vanessa.

She was staring at the document as if it might disappear.

Marcus spoke quietly.

“The fingerprint belongs to someone who died seven years ago.””

I looked at him.

“Who?””

He didn't answer.

Instead, he reached into the folder and pulled out one final photograph.

He placed it face down.

“Your father took this the week before he died.””

I turned it over.

It showed Vanessa standing outside a storage facility.

Beside her stood my father.

And between them was a little girl.

About four years old.

Nia.

But the date stamped in the corner was impossible.

January 2019.

Three years after Vanessa had supposedly first moved into our home.

I looked at Nia.

Then at Vanessa.

Then at my father in the photograph.

And something inside me clicked.

There had been another child.

A second girl.

Standing beside Vanessa.

I looked closer.

Nia wasn't alone.

The other little girl had the same blue-and-white hair clip Nia was wearing tonight.

I lifted my eyes to Vanessa.

“Who is the other girl?””

Vanessa's lips parted.

May you like

She whispered one name.

And Marcus immediately locked the front door.
