Chapter 9: The Vanishing Hour

I called Nia immediately.
She answered on the first ring.
“Dad?””
Her voice was shaking.
“Where are you?””
“At home.””
“Where’s Malik?””
“I don’t know.””
My chest tightened.
“What do you mean you don’t know?””
“He collapsed in the hallway.””
I looked at Marcus.
He was already turning the car around.
“Is he breathing?””
“Yes.””
“Is he awake?””
“No.””
“Did you call 911?””
“I did.””
“Good. Stay with him. Lock the front door.””
“It’s locked.””
“Don’t open it for anyone.””
“Dad…”
“What?””
“I think someone was in the house.””
The words froze me.
“How do you know?””
“I heard footsteps upstairs.””
“When?””
“Before Malik fell.””
Marcus pressed harder on the accelerator.
“Did you see anyone?””
“No.””
“Did you hear anything?””
Nia hesitated.
Then whispered,
“A woman.””
My stomach dropped.
“Who?””
“I don't know.””
“What did she say?””
“I only heard one thing.””
“What?””
Nia began to cry.
“She said, ‘Your mother wants you back.’”
I looked at Marcus.
He had heard every word.
“Daniel,” he said, “we're not going to St. Matthew's.””
I understood.
We couldn't leave the children alone.
“Call your brother,” I told Nia.
“Which brother?””
“Marcus.””
She was silent.
Then said,
“He's already here.””
My heart stopped.
“What?””
“He came through the back door.””
“That isn't Marcus.””
The line went dead.
I swerved the car hard enough for the tires to scream.
Vanessa was still in the back seat.
I had almost forgotten she was there.
She grabbed the handle.
“What's happening?””
“Someone is inside my house.””
She went pale.
“Who?””
“I don't know.””
“You need to turn around.””
“I am.””
Marcus looked at her.
“You knew this would happen.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“No.””
“Yes.””
“I swear.””
“You disappeared while we were at the storage unit.””
“I didn't disappear.””
“Then where were you?””
She stared at him.
“I went to make a call.””
“To Graham?””
“No.””
“Then who?””
Vanessa looked at me.
“Rachel.””
The car went silent.
“You spoke to Rachel?””
“Yes.””
“When?””
“Before we left the storage unit.””
“Why?””
“Because she told me not to go to the church.””
I stared at her in the mirror.
“Why didn't you tell me?””
“Because I knew you wouldn't listen.””
“And now you expect me to?””
“She said someone was waiting there for you.””
“Who?””
“I don't know.””
“You're lying.””
“No.””
Her voice cracked.
“I was trying to keep you alive.””
Marcus turned.
“You should have tried telling the truth eleven years ago.””
Vanessa looked down.
“I was ashamed.””
“No,” I said.
She raised her eyes.
“You were afraid.””
“Yes.””
“Of Graham?””
She shook her head.
“Of Ethan.””
I felt my pulse quicken.
“He's alive.””
“I know.””
“Where is he?””
“I don't know.””
“You said he wanted Lily dead.””
“He did.””
“Then why is he alive?””
Vanessa swallowed.
“Because your father made a deal with him.””
I stared at her.
“What deal?””
“He gave Ethan money.””
“For what?””
“To disappear.””
“And Ethan agreed?””
“At first.””
“What changed?””
“He wanted more.””
“Then what?””
Vanessa looked out the window.
“Your father promised him something else.””
“What?””
“Lily.””
My hands tightened around the steering wheel.
“He offered him his own daughter?””
“No.””
Vanessa's face crumpled.
“He offered him Nia.””
The words barely registered.
Marcus shouted,
“What?””
Vanessa looked at me.
“Your father believed Ethan would take Nia because Ethan thought she was his daughter.””
“And he would leave Lily alone.””
“Yes.””
“That doesn't make sense.””
“It was supposed to be a trade.””
“Between my father and a man who wanted a child dead?””
Vanessa nodded.
“Rachel found out.””
“That’s why she disappeared.””
“She ran.””
“Where?””
“I don't know.””
“You know everything.””
“I know what I was told.””
“By my father?””
“Yes.””
We reached my neighborhood.
Police cars were already outside my house.
An ambulance blocked the driveway.
I barely parked before jumping out.
“Nia!””
She came running through the front door.
I caught her.
“Where's Malik?””
“Inside.””
She clung to me.
“I thought someone took me.””
I looked down.
“Who was in the house?””
“I don't know.””
A paramedic rushed past us.
I turned toward the living room.
Malik was lying on the floor with an oxygen mask over his face.
A paramedic looked at me.
“Are you his father?””
“Yes.””
“He's breathing and his vitals are stabilizing.””
“What happened?””
“We don't know yet.””
I knelt beside Malik.
His eyes fluttered.
“Dad?””
“I'm here.””
He tried to sit up.
“Don't.””
He grabbed my wrist.
“Dad, Vanessa was here.””
I looked toward the hallway.
She was gone.
My blood went cold.
“Where?””
Malik pointed weakly toward the stairs.
“She came in through the back.””
Nia stepped closer.
“You said you didn't see anyone.””
“I lied.””
I looked at him.
“Why?””
“Because she told me she'd hurt Nia.””
I stood.
The paramedic grabbed my arm.
“Sir, don't leave him.””
I shook him off gently.
“I need to find her.””
A police officer stepped into the room.
“Find who?””
“My wife.””
He frowned.
“The woman outside?””
I froze.
“What woman?””
He pointed toward the driveway.
A police officer had stopped Vanessa.
She was standing beside the patrol car.
I ran outside.
“Vanessa!””
She turned.
Her face was wet with tears.
“Daniel.””
“What did you do?””
“Nothing.””
“Why were you upstairs?””
“To get something.””
“What?””
She hesitated.
“A photograph.””
I grabbed her shoulders.
“What photograph?””
She looked past me at Nia.
“The one from the hospital.””
Marcus came out behind me.
“She's holding something.””
Vanessa slowly opened her hand.
A small USB drive.
I stared at it.
“What is that?””
“Your father's final file.””
“You stole it.””
“No.””
“Then where did you get it?””
“Rachel gave it to me.””
Marcus's expression hardened.
“When?””
“This morning.””
“Where?””
“Saint Matthew's.””
I looked at the clock.
9:02.
The time on Rachel's message.
But Rachel wasn't there.
I suddenly understood.
“She sent you there.””
Vanessa nodded.
“She wanted you to come.””
“Why?””
“Because she couldn't come herself.””
“Why not?””
“Because Ethan found her.””
My heart stopped.
“Where?””
Vanessa looked at me.
“At the church.””
Marcus grabbed the USB.
“Then what were you doing here?””
Vanessa's eyes filled.
“I was trying to get Nia.””
My blood turned cold.
“What?””
“I was trying to take her somewhere safe.””
“You threatened my son.””
“I panicked.””
“You threatened Malik.””
“I didn't mean to.””
“Where were you taking Nia?””
Vanessa whispered,
“To Rachel.””
That was the first thing she had said all night that sounded like a plea rather than an excuse.
I stared at her.
“Rachel has Nia's sister.””
“Yes.””
“And now she wants Nia.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Vanessa looked at the USB.
“Because Lily isn't the one Ethan is looking for.””
I felt my stomach drop.
“Then who is?””
Vanessa whispered,
“Nia.””
Marcus shook his head.
“Why?””
“Because she has something Lily doesn't.””
“What?””
Vanessa stepped closer.
“The truth about Rachel's death.””
I stared at her.
“Rachel isn't dead.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“No.””
“Then what happened?””
Vanessa looked at Nia.
“She died once.””
My blood went cold.
“What?””
“She died in that hospital.””
Marcus frowned.
“You said she was alive.””
“She was.””
I stared at Vanessa.
“You're not making sense.””
“She was resuscitated.””
“What?””
“For eleven minutes.””
Nobody spoke.
Vanessa continued.
“Rachel's heart stopped after she gave birth. The doctors brought her back.””
I remembered the hospital footage.
Rachel standing in the corridor.
Alive.
“How long was she conscious?””
“Long enough to sign the papers.””
“Which papers?””
“The ones your father used to switch the babies.””
Marcus shook his head.
“Why would she agree?””
“Because she knew she was dying.””
I looked toward Nia.
“Then why hide?””
“Because she didn't die that night.””
“Then when?””
Vanessa closed her eyes.
“Seven days later.””
I stared.
“Where?””
“In the house beneath the hill.””
The words from my father's note suddenly made sense.
The farmhouse.
The hidden photographs.
The recordings.
Rachel had not been living there for years.
She had been dying there.
“Who was with her?””
“Your father.””
“Anyone else?””
“Me.””
“Graham?””
Vanessa shook her head.
“No.””
“Ethan?””
“No.””
“Then who killed her?””
Vanessa looked at me.
“Rachel killed herself.””
The sentence hit me like a punch.
“No.””
“She was dying anyway.””
“No.””
“She chose the day.””
“No.””
“She left instructions.””
“Stop.””
“Daniel—”
“Stop.””
Nia stepped between us.
“Dad?””
I looked at her.
She was holding something.
A folded piece of paper.
“What's that?””
“I found it in Malik's hand.””
I took it.
The handwriting was my father's.
The child who survives will remember.
I turned it over.
There was one final sentence.
Not through memory. Through blood.
My heart started pounding.
Marcus read over my shoulder.
“What does that mean?””
I looked at Nia.
Then at Vanessa.
Then at the hospital records.
The DNA tests.
The switched babies.
Rachel's hidden life.
Everything had been built around one question:
Who was Nia really?
My phone rang.
This time I recognized the number.
Elaine.
I answered.
“Hello?””
Her breathing was rapid.
“Daniel, I know where Lily is.””
“Where?””
“She came into the bank yesterday.””
My heart stopped.
“She's alive?””
“Yes.””
“Where is she now?””
Elaine hesitated.
“She left something for you.””
“What?””
“A lockbox.””
I closed my eyes.
“What was inside?””
Elaine's voice dropped.
“A birth certificate.””
“For Lily?””
“No.””
“For Nia?””
“No.””
“Then whose?””
Elaine whispered,
“Rachel Carter.””
I frowned.
“Rachel's birth certificate?””
“No.””
Her voice trembled.
“Her death certificate.””
I felt the room disappear around me.
“That's impossible.””
“I know.””
“What's wrong with it?””
“The date of death.””
“What about it?””
May you like
Elaine said,
“It’s dated tomorrow.””
