Chapter 7: The Name on the Tape

The metal door outside Unit 314 slammed shut.
Vanessa screamed.
“Someone's here.””
Marcus immediately killed his flashlight.
“Stay down.””
I crouched behind a stack of boxes, pulling Vanessa with me.
Another sound followed.
Footsteps.
Slow.
Measured.
Someone was walking along the concrete corridor outside.
Nia was miles away with Malik, yet every instinct in me wanted to run back to my house.
Then I remembered the recording.
Your father is the one who changed the babies.
My father.
The man I'd buried with my own hands.
The man whose photograph was hanging in my hallway.
The man who had spent eleven years apparently protecting a secret from me.
I whispered to Marcus.
“How many people?””
He shook his head.
“One.””
“How do you know?””
“Listen.””
The footsteps stopped.
Silence.
Then a voice came through the metal door.
“Daniel?””
I froze.
It was a woman's voice.
Older.
Familiar.
Vanessa looked at me.
Her eyes widened.
“You know her?””
I did.
But I couldn't place it.
The voice came again.
“Daniel, don't open the door.””
Marcus stared at the lock.
“Who is it?””
She answered.
“Elaine Morris.””
The banker.
I stood.
Marcus grabbed my arm.
“Wait.””
Elaine continued.
“I know what's in that unit.””
I looked at Vanessa.
She had gone completely still.
Marcus whispered, “How would a bank manager know about a storage unit?””
I didn't answer.
Elaine knocked twice.
Then once.
A pattern.
Vanessa's face drained of color.
“What?””
Marcus noticed.
“You recognize that?””
Vanessa nodded.
“That was Rachel's code.””
I walked toward the door.
“Daniel,” Marcus whispered.
“I need answers.””
I lifted the metal handle.
The moment I opened it, Elaine stepped inside.
She wasn't alone.
A man stood behind her.
I recognized him immediately.
Graham Pike.
He looked older than he had at my father's funeral.
But his eyes were the same.
Calm.
Cold.
Controlled.
He smiled.
“Daniel.””
My hand curled into a fist.
“You've got a lot to explain.””
Graham glanced around the unit.
“I was hoping you'd say that.””
Marcus stepped forward.
“You shouldn't be here.””
Graham looked at him.
“Marcus Bell.””
Marcus stiffened.
“You know me?””
“I know everyone your brother ever hired.””
Adrian.
Something about the way he said the name made the room feel smaller.
I blocked his path.
“You framed Adrian.””
Graham's expression barely changed.
“No.””
“You had him arrested.””
“I provided information to the police.””
“You lied.””
“I told them what I'd been told.””
“By whom?””
Graham looked at Vanessa.
She turned away.
I followed his gaze.
“What did she tell you?””
Graham smiled.
“Your wife isn't the person you should be asking.””
Vanessa snapped.
“Don't.””
He ignored her.
“The person who mattered most in this story died before you ever knew it existed.””
“My father.””
Graham nodded.
“Exactly.””
Marcus scoffed.
“Your father didn't change those records alone.””
I turned.
“What do you mean?””
Marcus looked at Graham.
“You told him.””
Graham shook his head.
“Daniel's father discovered the babies had been switched.””
I stared at him.
“Then why did Rachel's recording say my father changed them?””
“Because he did.””
“Why?””
Graham walked past me.
He stopped in front of the photograph of the two girls.
“Because one of them was going to die.””
Nobody spoke.
I could hear rain hitting the metal roof.
Graham touched the photograph with one finger.
“Your father believed Nia was in immediate danger.””
“From whom?””
“From Rachel's husband.””
I frowned.
“Rachel wasn't married.””
Graham looked at me.
“That is what everyone believed.””
My stomach twisted.
“What are you talking about?””
He reached into his coat.
I stepped back, ready for anything.
Instead, he pulled out a folded marriage certificate.
He handed it to me.
The names were there.
*Rachel Anne Carter.*
And beneath it:
*Ethan Vale.*
I stared at the date.
Three weeks before Nia was born.
“This is fake.””
“No.””
“I've never heard that name.””
“Because your father erased him.””
“Why?””
Graham looked toward Vanessa.
“Ask her.””
I turned.
Vanessa was crying.
“Who is Ethan?””
She whispered, “Rachel's husband.””
“Why did she hide him?””
“He wasn't the man you think he was.””
“That's not an answer.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“He was abusive.””
Graham interrupted.
“He was obsessed with the children.””
Marcus frowned.
“Both of them?””
“No.””
Graham's voice lowered.
“Only one.””
He looked at the photograph.
“Lily.””
My mind raced.
“Why Lily?””
“Because she was Ethan's biological daughter.””
Vanessa suddenly shouted,
“No!””
Graham turned.
“You know I'm right.””
“I don't!””
“You knew the moment the hospital told you.””
“Stop.””
“You've spent eleven years pretending you didn't know.””
I looked at Vanessa.
“Did Ethan father Lily?””
She covered her face.
“Yes.””
The answer landed like a physical blow.
I looked at the photograph again.
Lily was Vanessa's biological daughter.
Ethan's biological daughter.
Nia was Rachel's daughter.
Adrian believed Nia was his.
Everything I'd believed about the children was wrong.
But one piece remained.
“What did my father do?””
Graham looked at me.
“He switched the babies.””
“With the hospital?””
“After Rachel died.””
“Why?””
“To hide Lily.””
“From Ethan?””
“Yes.””
“Then why did he let Vanessa raise Nia?””
Graham laughed bitterly.
“He didn't.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“Your father wasn't trying to protect Vanessa.””
He pointed toward her.
“He was trying to protect Nia from her.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“That isn't true.””
Graham continued.
“Your father discovered Vanessa had an arrangement with Ethan.””
My blood went cold.
“An arrangement?””
“She was going to give Lily back.””
Vanessa stared at the floor.
“I was scared.””
“You promised him the baby,” Graham said.
“I didn't know what he would do.””
“You knew exactly what he would do.””
I looked at Vanessa.
“Did you sell your daughter?””
She screamed.
“No!””
Graham said quietly,
“You were promised money.””
Silence.
Marcus looked at me.
“The trust.””
I understood.
Graham nodded.
“Ethan wanted access to Rachel's trust. He couldn't get it himself because he wasn't one of the beneficiaries.””
“But Lily was.””
“Yes.””
“So if Lily lived…”
“She inherited.””
I stared at the photograph.
“And Nia?””
“Did not.””
My stomach dropped.
“My father switched them because he wanted Ethan to believe Lily was dead.””
“Yes.””
“And Vanessa raised Nia because she thought she had Lily.””
Graham smiled without humor.
“Exactly.””
I looked at Vanessa.
She was shaking.
“You knew Nia wasn't yours.””
“Not at first.””
“When?””
“The night your father showed me the DNA results.””
“Why didn't you tell me?””
“Because by then, Nia loved you.””
I stared at her.
“That was the reason?””
“I knew you'd take her away.””
“She was my niece.””
“I thought you'd never forgive me.””
“And you chose to keep lying?””
Vanessa nodded.
“I was selfish.””
The honesty hurt more than another lie.
Marcus suddenly raised his hand.
“Wait.””
Everyone stopped.
He looked toward the back of the unit.
“What?””
He walked to the wooden wall and tapped it.
A hollow sound answered.
“There’s a compartment.””
Graham's expression changed.
Marcus looked at him.
“You knew?””
Graham said nothing.
Marcus found a loose panel and pulled.
Behind it was a narrow metal safe.
No keyhole.
Only a keypad.
I looked at the silver key from my father's box.
Marcus took it.
“This has to mean something.””
He inserted the key into a small slot beneath the keypad.
The safe clicked.
Inside was a single red folder.
And an old phone.
I picked up the phone.
The screen turned on immediately.
One video file waited.
*PLAY ME — DANIEL*
My throat tightened.
I pressed play.
My father's face appeared.
Older.
Tired.
Sitting behind the desk in his study.
“If you're watching this, then Vanessa didn't tell you everything.””
Vanessa sank into a chair.
My father's recording continued.
“I switched the babies.””
I closed my eyes.
“I know what that makes me look like.””
He paused.
“I did it because someone was coming for Lily.””
Graham stepped closer.
My father's voice continued.
“His name is Ethan Vale.””
I opened my eyes.
“He is not dead.””
Vanessa gasped.
“He has spent years trying to find his daughter.””
My father looked directly into the camera.
“He believes Lily is Nia.””
The video froze for a second.
Then resumed.
“And Daniel, there is one thing you must understand.””
My father leaned closer.
“I did not separate the girls because they were unsafe together.””
He swallowed.
“I separated them because one of them was being watched from the day she was born.””
The screen went black.
A second file appeared automatically.
*CAMERA 2 — OCTOBER 14, 2015*
Marcus looked at me.
“Don't.””
I pressed play.
Security footage appeared.
A hospital corridor.
A timestamp.
2:03 a.m.
Vanessa came into view.
She was carrying a newborn.
Behind her was a man.
Ethan.
I watched them disappear through a stairwell door.
Then another figure entered the frame.
My father.
He was carrying the second baby.
Nia.
He looked down the corridor.
Then directly toward the camera.
And behind him stood Rachel.
Alive.
My breath stopped.
She was pale.
Weak.
But standing.
Alive after the time everyone said she had died.
The video continued.
Rachel walked toward my father.
He handed her the baby.
She looked at him.
Then she pointed toward the stairwell.
My father shook his head.
Rachel appeared to say something.
The security audio was too faint.
I turned up the volume.
Static.
Then one sentence became clear.
Rachel's voice.
“Daniel cannot know.””
I stopped the video.
Nobody breathed.
I looked at the screen.
“Rachel was alive.””
Vanessa began sobbing.
Graham whispered,
“Now you understand.””
“No.””
I turned toward him.
“I don't.””
I picked up the phone again.
“There’s a missing minute.””
Marcus nodded.
“From the footage?””
“Yes.””
The timestamp jumped from 2:03 to 2:05.
“Where is 2:04?””
Graham's face changed.
“I destroyed it.””
I stared at him.
“Why?””
“Because that minute shows who took Rachel.””
Vanessa stood.
“You said she died.””
“I said nothing.””
“You told me she was dead.””
“I told you what I needed you to believe.””
I stepped toward him.
“Who took my sister?””
Graham looked at me.
“Your father.””
I felt the floor disappear beneath me.
“He didn't kill her.””
“No.””
“Then where did he take her?””
Graham's eyes shifted toward the red folder.
“There’s a file in there.””
I opened it.
A photograph fell out.
Rachel.
Older.
Alive.
And standing beside her was a teenage girl.
Lily.
But Lily wasn't ten.
She was sixteen.
The photograph had been taken yesterday.
On the back, someone had written:
She's alive.
Then another line.
Rachel is alive too.
I looked up.
Graham had gone pale.
Marcus whispered,
“That’s impossible.””
My phone began ringing.
Unknown number.
I answered.
A woman's voice spoke through the static.
“Daniel?””
I couldn't breathe.
It was Rachel.
“Dad told you the truth about the babies.””
I gripped the phone.
“Rachel?””
“Yes.””
“Where are you?””
There was a long pause.
Then she whispered,
“I'm with Lily.””
My heart slammed against my ribs.
“Where?””
Another pause.
“Somewhere your father knew you'd never look.””
The call crackled.
Then Rachel said five words that turned every secret in that storage unit upside down.
“Daniel, don't trust Graham.””
May you like
The line went dead.
And when I looked up, Graham was gone.
