Chapter 8: The House Beneath the Hill

The road disappeared into the trees twenty miles outside town.

I drove with both hands locked around the steering wheel, Rachel’s voice still trapped inside my head.

Don’t trust Graham.

The call had lasted less than a minute.

It had changed everything.

Marcus sat beside me, staring at the dark highway.

Vanessa was in the back seat, silent.

She had been silent for twenty-three minutes.

That worried me more than her crying.

“Say something,” I said.

Vanessa looked at me through the rearview mirror.

“What do you want me to say?””

“The truth.””

“I've given you the truth.””

“No. You've given me pieces.””

She looked away.

Marcus spoke.

“Where are we going?””

I held up the photograph Rachel had sent.

There was an address written on the back.

An old farmhouse.

Outside Bellwood.

My father had owned it once.

He'd sold it in 2008.

Or so I thought.

“I found the address in my father's papers,” I said.

Marcus frowned.

“This place isn't on the current property records.””

“Exactly.””

Vanessa suddenly leaned forward.

“You shouldn't go there.””

I met her eyes in the mirror.

“Why?””

“Because your father didn't sell that house.””

Marcus turned.

“What?””

Vanessa swallowed.

“He transferred it.””

“To whom?””

“I don't know.””

“You lived with him for years,” Marcus said.

“You expect us to believe you don't know?””

“I wasn't told.””

“Then what do you know?””

She hesitated.

“I know he used it when he needed someone to disappear.””

The words chilled me.

“Who disappeared there?””

Vanessa's eyes lowered.

“Rachel.””

The car went silent.

I pressed the accelerator.

“She was alive,” I said.

“Yes.””

“And my father took her there.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Vanessa looked out the window.

“To keep Ethan from finding her.””

Marcus shook his head.

“That doesn't explain why nobody was allowed to know.””

“There were people watching.””

“Who?””

Vanessa didn't answer.

I hit the steering wheel with my palm.

“Who?””

She flinched.

“Graham.””

Marcus said, “That doesn't make sense. Graham just told us Daniel's father was the one who took Rachel.””

“He lied.””

“So did you.””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“Yes.””

The trees grew thicker.

The moon disappeared behind the clouds.

Then I saw it.

A narrow iron gate.

Half-hidden by vines.

Beyond it was a gravel road disappearing into the woods.

The address matched the one on the photograph.

I turned through the gate.

The house appeared five minutes later.

It was smaller than I remembered.

Two floors.

White paint peeling around the windows.

A collapsed porch.

One light glowing on the second floor.

I stopped the car.

Marcus stared at the house.

“Someone's inside.””

I nodded.

Vanessa whispered,

“Don't go in.””

I turned around.

“You're staying in the car.””

“No.””

“You're not coming.””

She opened the door.

“If Rachel is there, she needs me.””

I stepped out.

“Rachel doesn't need you.””

Vanessa looked at me.

“She might.””

Marcus grabbed a flashlight.

“We go together.””

I nodded.

We walked toward the house.

The front door was unlocked.

That was the first thing that bothered me.

The second was the smell.

Cinnamon.

Old wood.

And something medicinal.

The hallway was dark.

Marcus swept his flashlight across the walls.

There were photographs.

Dozens of them.

My father.

Rachel.

Lily.

Nia.

I stopped.

One photograph showed Nia at age six.

Another showed Lily at age seven.

Another showed both girls at the same playground.

They had never lived together.

At least, that was what everyone had told me.

“How did they get these?””

Marcus moved closer.

“They were being watched.””

I touched the glass covering one photograph.

“By my father?””

“Probably.””

A sound came from upstairs.

A floorboard creaked.

Vanessa whispered,

“Rachel?””

No answer.

Marcus motioned us toward the stairs.

I went first.

Halfway up, I saw another photograph.

My father standing beside Rachel.

She looked much older than she had in the hospital recording.

Maybe thirty.

I turned the picture over.

A date.

Three years ago.

I stared.

“She was alive three years ago.””

Marcus nodded.

“Looks like it.””

“Why would my father hide this?””

Before he could answer, a door upstairs slammed.

We ran.

At the end of the hallway was a bedroom.

The light was on.

I pushed the door open.

Nobody.

An open window.

Curtains whipping in the wind.

A chair knocked over.

And on the bed—

a blue sweater.

Tiny.

Child-sized.

I picked it up.

Inside the collar was a stitched name.

*LILY.*

Vanessa gasped.

“She was here.””

Marcus checked the window.

“Recently.””

I looked around.

A notebook sat on the nightstand.

I opened it.

The first page contained a single sentence.

Daniel, if you've come here, Rachel is already gone.

My heart sank.

I turned the page.

She wanted to meet you.

Another page.

I told her it was too dangerous.

I turned again.

This time there was only one name.

*Graham.*

Then a fourth page.

He knows where Lily is.

My phone buzzed.

A message.

Unknown number.

You shouldn't have come here.

Another message arrived.

The house has cameras.

Marcus immediately looked toward the ceiling.

“We need to leave.””

Then every light in the house went out.

Vanessa screamed.

A door slammed downstairs.

I pulled out my phone.

“Marcus.””

“I know.””

We moved toward the stairs.

A man's voice came from below.

“You always were curious, Daniel.””

Graham.

I felt my blood turn cold.

“How did you find us?”” Marcus whispered.

“Don't know,” I said.

Graham laughed from somewhere in the darkness.

“You really think I'd let you walk into this house without following?””

Marcus pulled his gun.

I stared at him.

“You brought a gun?””

“Not for Graham.””

“For whom?””

He didn't answer.

Graham spoke again.

“Daniel, come downstairs.””

“No.””

“You want Rachel?””

“Yes.””

“Then come alone.””

Marcus shook his head.

“Don't.””

Graham continued.

“Bring Vanessa.””

She stepped forward.

“I'll go.””

I grabbed her arm.

“No.””

She looked at me.

“If you want answers, you need someone he actually cares about.””

“Graham doesn't care about you.””

“No.””

Her voice broke.

“He cares about what I know.””

The lights came back on.

Graham wasn't downstairs.

But the front door was open.

On the floor was a brown cardboard box.

Marcus approached carefully.

I recognized the handwriting immediately.

My father's.

I opened it.

Inside was an old hard drive.

Beside it was a handwritten note.

The person you are looking for is not where you think.

I looked at Marcus.

“What does that mean?””

He lifted the hard drive.

“Let's find out.””

We returned to the car.

Marcus connected the drive to his laptop.

A password screen appeared.

Vanessa stared at it.

“What's the password?””

“I don't know.””

I thought about my father.

His habits.

His favorite saying.

His old office.

Then I remembered something he'd once told me when I was seventeen.

People hide the truth in ordinary things.

I typed:

*crablegs*

Marcus looked at me.

“Seriously?””

“Try it.””

The screen unlocked.

Hundreds of files appeared.

Financial records.

Hospital documents.

Surveillance photographs.

And one folder labeled:

*THE CHILDREN — FINAL*

I clicked it.

Inside were two birth certificates.

The first belonged to Nia.

The second belonged to Lily.

I opened Nia's file.

Mother: Rachel Carter.

Father: Adrian Bell.

My hands froze.

Marcus said quietly,

“There it is.””

For eleven years, Adrian had been wrong.

But then I opened Lily's record.

Mother: Vanessa Reed.

Father: Ethan Vale.

I stared at the screen.

The switch wasn't just about money.

It was about hiding two different bloodlines.

Then another file opened automatically.

A video.

My father appeared.

This time he looked terrified.

“Daniel,” he said, “there's something I couldn't tell you while I was alive.””

He looked over his shoulder.

“I changed the babies because Ethan wanted Lily dead.””

Vanessa covered her mouth.

My father's voice shook.

“But that's only half the story.””

The video skipped.

Then resumed.

“Nia's biological father is Adrian.””

I looked toward the back seat.

Vanessa stared at me.

My father continued.

“And Adrian is not the man everyone believes him to be.””

The video stopped.

A final file opened.

A photograph appeared.

Adrian standing beside Ethan.

Both men were much younger.

Both were smiling.

I zoomed in.

On the table between them was a document.

A paternity agreement.

Marcus leaned closer.

“What the hell?””

I read the heading.

*Private Adoption and Financial Settlement.*

Then I saw the signatures.

Adrian Bell.

Ethan Vale.

My father.

And beneath them—

Rachel.

I couldn't breathe.

Rachel hadn't been a helpless victim.

She had signed something.

Something that gave Adrian temporary custody of Nia.

And Ethan rights over Lily.

Vanessa suddenly whispered,

“There were conditions.””

I turned toward her.

“What conditions?””

“If Rachel died, the children would be separated.””

“Why?””

“So neither father could claim both.””

“Who created the agreement?””

Vanessa looked terrified.

“Your father.””

“And Rachel agreed?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because she knew someone was coming for them.””

“Who?””

Vanessa stared at the laptop.

Then said,

“The person who funded Graham.””

Marcus went still.

“Who funded him?””

Vanessa shook her head.

“I don't know his name.””

“You're lying.””

“No.””

She pointed at the screen.

“Your father knew.””

I looked at the final file.

It hadn't finished loading.

A password prompt appeared.

Beneath it was a clue.

*What did your mother call the child she never lost?*

I knew the answer immediately.

My mother's nickname for me was Danny.

But that wasn't it.

I thought about my childhood.

My father's house.

My mother's garden.

The old blue quilt she kept folded at the end of her bed.

Then I remembered.

She had called Rachel—

her little bird.

I typed:

*littlebird*

The file opened.

A single video appeared.

No date.

No location.

I pressed play.

Rachel appeared on screen.

Older.

Tired.

Alive.

She looked directly at the camera.

“Daniel, if you're seeing this, then you've finally learned about the girls.””

I leaned closer.

“I need you to listen carefully.””

Rachel took a breath.

“Lily is alive.””

I nodded.

“She's with me.””

Vanessa began to cry.

Rachel continued.

“And Nia is not the child you think she is.””

My heart stopped.

Rachel looked down.

Then back at the camera.

“Daniel…”

A voice behind her interrupted.

“Rachel.””

She turned.

Her face changed.

Fear.

Real fear.

The camera shook.

A man's hand appeared on screen.

Rachel gasped.

“No.””

The video cut to static.

Then one final frame appeared.

A location.

A church.

And a name beneath it.

*St. Matthew's — Sunday, 9:00 a.m.*

Marcus stared at the screen.

“Today's Sunday.””

I looked at the clock.

8:37 a.m.

Vanessa whispered,

“Rachel will be there.””

I grabbed the keys.

Then my phone buzzed.

A new message.

This time, the sender wasn't unknown.

It was from Nia.

Dad, Malik just collapsed.

My heart stopped.

May you like

The message beneath it arrived three seconds later.

And Vanessa's not here anymore.
