Chapter 10: The Truth Behind The Door
My mother stepped into the room.
The same woman who tucked me into bed.
The same woman who taught me right from wrong.
The same woman who told me my father died in an accident.
She looked older than I remembered.
Not physically.
Emotionally.
Like she had been carrying a weight too heavy for one person.
“Mom.””
She looked at me.
“Daniel.””
I didn’t know whether to hug her or ask why she destroyed my life.
So I did neither.
“Tell me the truth.””
She closed her eyes.
“I wanted to.””
“When?””
“Every day.””
“Then why didn’t you?””
“Because every day I was afraid.””
I pointed toward Richard.
“Afraid of him?””
She looked at Richard.
“No.””
Everyone went silent.
Richard looked shocked.
“Then who?””
My mother looked at Claire.
Then at me.
“The people who created Richard Hale.””
I frowned.
“What?””
Richard stepped forward.
“My enemies.””
My mother nodded.
“They weren’t just criminals.””
She looked at me.
“They were powerful people.””
“People who could destroy anyone.””
I remembered the phone call.
The warnings.
The fear.
My mother continued.
“Your father discovered everything.””
“What happened that night?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“He was supposed to meet me.””
I froze.
“What?””
“He knew I was involved.””
Richard looked away.
“I wasn’t helping them.””
My mother’s voice broke.
“I was trying to get close enough to destroy them.””
Nobody spoke.
“I made one mistake.””
“What?””
“I trusted the wrong person.””
Her eyes moved to Claire.
Claire looked down.
“I was trying to help.””
My mother nodded sadly.
“I know.””
I looked between them.
“So who betrayed Dad?””
My mother answered:
“Neither of us.””
Richard stepped forward.
“It was someone we never suspected.””
My mother reached into her bag.
She pulled out an old envelope.
Another one.
“This was found after your father died.””
She handed it to me.
Inside was a letter.
My father’s handwriting.
I recognized it instantly.
My hands shook as I read.
*Daniel, if you ever find this, it means I failed to protect you.*
I swallowed.
*Your mother is not your enemy. Richard is not your enemy. The person you should fear is the one who has always been close enough to watch you.*
I looked up.
Everyone was silent.
I read the final line.
*The person who opened the door for me that night was the person who locked me away forever.*
I looked at Claire.
Then my mother.
Then Richard.
“Who?””
Nobody answered.
Then my phone rang.
A video call.
Unknown number.
I answered.
The screen showed a face.
A face I knew.
A face I trusted.
My aunt Claire.
But Claire was standing right in front of me.
The person on the phone smiled.
And then I realized.
The person we had been searching for was never Claire.
It was someone who had been pretending to be her.
The screen changed.
A voice whispered:
“You all spent years looking for the wrong monster.””
My mother stepped closer.
“Who are you?””
The person smiled.
Then removed the disguise.
And my entire body went cold.
Because the person behind the mask was someone I had known my entire life.
My father’s best friend.
The man who had attended my father’s funeral.
The man who had comforted my mother.
The man who had helped raise me.
The man who had opened the door that night.
My father’s closest friend, Andrew.
He smiled.
“Daniel.””
The room went silent.
Andrew continued:
“Your father always thought the truth would save people.””
He laughed softly.
“He never understood that the truth is what destroys them.””
I stepped toward the screen.
“Why?””
Andrew looked at me.
“Because your father found something he should never have found.””
“What?””
Andrew smiled.
“The reason your family survived.””
I stared.
He continued:
“Your father didn’t die because he knew too much.””
A pause.
“He died because he was about to tell you.””
The call ended.
For years, I thought the biggest betrayal was my girlfriend refusing to get into my car.
I thought it was about a door.
A small gesture.
A silly argument.
But I was wrong.
That night taught me something I would never forget.
Sometimes people aren’t standing outside a door because they want you to open it.
Sometimes they’re standing there because they’re afraid of what’s waiting on the other side.
And sometimes…
May you like
The person you trust to open that door…
Is the one who has been hiding the key all along.
