Chapter 7: The Confession

I didn’t open the door.

Not because I was afraid.

Because I knew exactly what Richard wanted.

He wanted control.

He wanted to walk into the room, sit down, and tell the story his way.

People like him didn’t confess.

They negotiated.

“You should leave,” I said.

Richard stayed silent.

Then:

“Daniel, if I wanted to hurt you, you would already know.””

Emily stepped closer.

“Don’t listen to him.””

Richard heard her.

Of course he did.

A smile entered his voice.

“Emily.””

She froze.

“You sound just like your mother.””

The color disappeared from her face.

“How do you know my mother?””

A pause.

Then Richard answered:

“Because I loved her.””

I looked at Emily.

She looked sick.

“That’s impossible.””

“No,” Richard said.

“What’s impossible is believing the version of events you were given.””

Emily walked toward the door.

I stopped her.

“No.””

She looked at me.

“He knows something.””

“He knows how to manipulate people.””

Richard sighed.

“Daniel, your father said the same thing about me.””

That sentence made me angry.

“You don’t get to talk about my father.””

The hallway went quiet.

Then Richard said:

“Open the door.””

“No.””

“I’m going to tell you something your mother never did.””

I didn’t respond.

“Your father wasn’t investigating me because he hated me.””

I waited.

“He was investigating me because he found out what happened to Emily’s real father.””

Emily stepped closer.

“What does that mean?””

Richard answered:

“Michael Carter didn’t abandon you.””

Emily covered her mouth.

“He was killed.””

The words landed like a bomb.

“No.””

“Yes.””

“No.””

Richard’s voice softened.

“Your mother knew.””

Emily looked at me.

Her eyes were full of pain.

“She knew?””

I didn’t know.

I couldn’t defend anyone.

Richard continued.

“Your mother was afraid.””

“She was protecting me.””

“She was protecting herself.””

“Stop lying!””

Emily shouted.

Richard became quiet.

Then he said:

“I’m not the only person who made mistakes.””

That sentence stayed in the air.

Because it sounded like a confession.

But also an accusation.

Finally, I opened the door.

Richard stood there.

Older than I remembered.

Not the powerful CEO from the office.

Just an aging man carrying too many secrets.

He looked at Emily.

“I’m sorry.””

She stared at him.

“You don’t get to say that.””

“I know.””

“You left me.””

Richard looked away.

“I know.””

“You let me believe you didn’t want me.””

His eyes became wet.

“I know.””

For the first time, he didn’t look like a villain.

He looked broken.

And somehow, that made it more confusing.

“Why?”” Emily asked.

Richard swallowed.

“Because if you knew the truth, you would have been in danger.””

“From who?””

He looked at me.

My chest tightened.

“From people who wanted the evidence destroyed.””

“What evidence?””

Richard looked at the box on the table.

“The same evidence your mother hid.””

I stepped forward.

“What evidence?””

Richard reached into his coat.

He pulled out a small flash drive.

“I spent twenty-five years trying to recover this.””

Emily stared.

“What is it?””

“The truth.””

I didn’t trust him.

“Why give it to us now?””

Richard looked at me.

“Because someone else found out where it was.””

My phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

No one spoke.

Then a voice whispered:

“You should have listened to your mother.””

My blood turned cold.

“Who is this?””

The caller hung up.

Richard looked at my phone.

His face changed.

“That wasn’t meant to happen yet.””

I stared at him.

“What?””

He looked toward the hallway.

Then he said:

“We need to leave.””

“Why?””

Because for the first time, Richard Hale looked genuinely afraid.

“Because whoever killed your father…”

May you like

He looked at Emily.

“…is still alive.””
