Chapter 6: The Woman Who Knew Too Much

I spent the next three hours staring at the phone on my floor.

I wanted to call Emily.

I wanted to ask her everything.

I wanted her to tell me my mother was wrong.

But I couldn’t move.

Because the worst part wasn’t the accusation.

The worst part was that it made sense.

Every piece of the puzzle had a place now.

Richard Hale.

My father.

Emily’s mother.

The hidden box.

The letter.

The warning.

I had spent my entire life believing my father died because of bad luck.

A highway.

A rainy night.

A tragic accident.

That was the story my mother gave me.

But now I wondered if it was just the story she needed me to believe.

My phone rang.

Emily.

I watched it vibrate.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

Finally, I answered.

“Daniel?””

Her voice immediately told me she had been crying.

“Where are you?””

“At home.””

“Are you okay?””

I almost laughed.

That question felt impossible.

“Emily, did your mother know my father?””

Silence.

A long, painful silence.

“Daniel…”

“Answer me.””

“I don’t know what happened between them.””

“That’s not what I asked.””

She didn’t speak.

I stood up.

“Did she know him?””

“Yes.””

My stomach tightened.

“How well?””

“I don’t know.””

“Emily.””

“I swear, I don’t know.””

Her voice cracked.

“My mom never talked about him. She barely talked about that entire time in her life.””

“Then why was there a letter with my name on it?””

“I don’t know.””

“Why was your father’s picture connected to Richard?””

“I don’t know!””

She shouted the words.

Then immediately started crying.

“I’m sorry.””

I closed my eyes.

Hearing her hurt made everything harder.

“I’m not angry at you.””

“Sounds like you are.””

“I’m angry because I don’t know what’s real anymore.””

She became quiet.

Then she said:

“Come over.””

I hesitated.

“Daniel, please.””

Something in her voice made me agree.

When I arrived at her apartment, she was sitting on the couch holding the old photograph.

She looked exhausted.

Not like someone hiding a secret.

Like someone whose entire identity had collapsed.

“I didn’t know,” she said before I even sat down.

I looked at her.

“Didn’t know what?””

“That my father wasn’t my father.””

The words hit me.

“What?””

She handed me another document.

“My birth records.””

I looked through the papers.

The original copy.

The one hidden underneath the changed version.

My eyes moved across the page.

Father:

Michael Carter.

But underneath the ink, there was something else.

A name that had been scratched out.

Richard Hale.

I looked up.

“Emily…”

She wiped her face.

“My whole life, I thought my father abandoned me.””

She looked at the document.

“But what if he didn’t?””

I didn’t answer.

Because I had no answer.

“What if someone made him disappear?””

The room went quiet.

Then someone knocked on the door.

Emily froze.

Neither of us moved.

The knock came again.

Three slow taps.

I stood up.

“Who knows you’re here?””

“No one.””

“Emily.””

“No one.””

I walked toward the door.

“Daniel, wait.””

I looked through the peephole.

And my blood went cold.

Richard Hale was standing outside.

I turned around.

Emily covered her mouth.

“How?””

I didn’t know.

Richard knocked again.

“Daniel.””

His voice was calm.

Too calm.

“I know you’re inside.””

Emily grabbed my arm.

“What do we do?””

I looked at the door.

The man who had been connected to every secret.

Every lie.

Every unanswered question.

He was standing only inches away.

Then Richard spoke again.

“Daniel, you deserve the truth.””

I didn’t move.

“Then tell me from outside.””

A small pause.

Then he laughed.

Not loudly.

Almost sadly.

“You sound exactly like your father.””

My body froze.

Richard continued.

“That’s why he was dangerous.””

The door handle moved slightly.

Emily stepped back.

“Daniel…”

I looked at her.

Then at the door.

Richard’s voice lowered.

“And that’s why he died.””

The hallway went silent.

My hand tightened into a fist.

Because for the first time in my life…

I knew.

May you like

My father’s death wasn’t an accident.

And the man who knew why was standing on the other side of the door.
