Chapter 3: The Man In The Photograph

I didn’t answer.

Not because I didn’t know what to say.

Because I knew exactly what I wanted to say.

And I was afraid it was the wrong answer.

Emily watched my face carefully.

“Daniel?””

I looked at the picture again.

The man smiling beside a seven-year-old Emily wasn’t just familiar.

He was someone I saw almost every morning.

Someone whose name was printed on the glass doors of my workplace.

Someone everyone respected.

Someone I trusted.

“His name is Richard Hale,” I finally said.

Emily froze.

“Yes.””

“You know him?””

I looked away.

“He’s my boss.””

Her expression changed instantly.

“What?””

“He’s the CEO of the company I work for.””

The color disappeared from her face.

“No.””

“Emily…”

“No.””

She took a step back.

“That’s impossible.””

“Why?””

“Because my father’s name isn’t Richard Hale.””

I stared at her.

“What?””

She shook her head.

“My father’s name was Michael Carter.””

The rain grew heavier.

For a moment, neither of us moved.

“Then why is his picture with you?”” I asked.

“I don’t know.””

I looked at the photograph.

The man in it looked younger.

But it was definitely him.

Same eyes.

Same scar above his eyebrow.

Same smile.

“How did you get this?””

“My mother kept it hidden.””

“Hidden?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Emily’s hands started shaking.

“I don’t know.””

Something about that answer bothered me.

Because suddenly, this wasn’t just an old family wound.

There was a secret.

A bigger one.

“Did your mother ever talk about him?””

“Barely.””

“What did she say?””

“That he wasn’t a good man.””

I looked back toward the restaurant.

“Emily, you need to tell me everything.””

She sat down.

“I told you he left.””

I nodded.

“But there’s more.””

She stared at the ground.

“The night he left, my mother said she found something.””

“What?””

“A letter.””

“What kind of letter?””

“I don’t know.””

“Emily.””

“She never showed me.””

I sat beside her.

“Why?””

“Because she said it would hurt me.””

I looked at the photograph.

“What did your mother do after he left?””

“She changed our last name.””

My eyebrows lifted.

“What?””

“My birth certificate originally had Carter. Then suddenly it became my mother’s last name.””

I felt a chill.

“Did you ever question it?””

“I was a kid.””

“Right.””

She covered her face.

“This is crazy.””

“No.””

She looked at me.

“It is.””

I shook my head.

“No. Crazy would be finding a random person who looks like him.””

I held up the picture.

“This is something else.””

Emily was quiet.

Then she asked:

“Do you think Richard Hale is my father?””

I didn’t want to answer.

Because if I was wrong, I could hurt her.

But if I was right…

Everything she believed about her childhood was a lie.

“I don’t know.””

That was the truth.

And she knew it.

The next morning, I went to work earlier than usual.

I barely slept.

My mind kept replaying the conversation.

The door.

The phone call.

The photograph.

Richard Hale.

When I entered the office, I saw him standing near the conference room.

He smiled.

“Daniel.””

“Morning.””

He looked at me.

“You seem distracted.””

“I’m fine.””

He studied me for a second.

“You’re a terrible liar.””

I forced a smile.

“Long night.””

He nodded.

Then he walked closer.

“Everything okay with Emily?””

My entire body froze.

“How do you know her name?””

The smile disappeared.

Only for a second.

But I saw it.

A flash of fear.

Then he recovered.

“I’ve seen her name on your emergency contact forms.””

I nodded slowly.

But something felt wrong.

“Right.””

He walked away.

I watched him disappear into his office.

Then my phone buzzed.

A message from Emily.

One sentence.

My hands went cold.

*I found my mother’s hidden box.*

A second message arrived.

*Daniel, you need to see what’s inside before I open it.*

I stared at the screen.

Then another message appeared.

A photo.

The first thing I noticed was the old envelope.

The second thing I noticed was the name written on it.

Not Emily’s father.

May you like

Not Richard Hale.

Mine.
